Allah ordered His Prophet to forgive the people their misbehavior (towards him).  

البخاري:٤٦٤٤ – وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ

أَمَرَ اللَّهُ نَبِيَّهُ ﷺ أَنْ يَأْخُذَ الْعَفْوَ مِنْ أَخْلاَقِ النَّاسِ أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ

The Prophet of Allah ﷺ was commanded to hold to forgiveness from the conduct of the people.  

أبو داود:٤٧٨٧ – حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطُّفَاوِيُّ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ فِي

قَوْلِهِ { خُذِ الْعَفْوَ } قَالَ أُمِرَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يَأْخُذَ الْعَفْوَ مِنْ أَخْلاَقِ النَّاسِ

الحاكم:٤٣٠ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بَالَوَيْهِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ مَطَرٍ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّاقِدُ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطُّفَاوِيُّ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

فِي قَوْلِهِ ﷻ {خُذِ الْعَفْوَ} [الأعراف 199] قَالَ «أَمَرَ اللَّهُ نَبِيَّهُ ﷺ أَنْ يَأْخُذَ الْعَفْوَ فِي أَخْلَاقِ النَّاسِ»  

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الْبُخَارِيِّ وَقَدِ احْتَجَّ بِالطُّفَاوِيِّ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ وَقَدْ قِيلَ فِيهِ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ» على شرط البخاري
