My foster uncle came and asked permission (to enter) but I refused to admit him till I asked Allah's Apostle about that. He said, "He is your uncle, so allow him to come in." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have been suckled by a woman and not by a man." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He is your uncle, so let him enter upon you." And that happened after the order of Al-Hijab (compulsory veiling) was revealed. All things which become unlawful because of blood relations are unlawful because of the corresponding foster suckling relations.

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ جَاءَ عَمِّي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَىَّ فَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ حَتَّى أَسْأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَأْذَنِي لَهُ قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ وَذَلِكَ بَعْدَ أَنْ ضُرِبَ عَلَيْنَا الْحِجَابُ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ يَحْرُمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ مَا يَحْرُمُ مِنَ الْوِلاَدَةِ

My foster uncle came to me and sought permission (to enter the house), but I refused him permission until I had solicited the opinion of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, I said to him: My foster-uncle sought my permission to (enter the house), but I did not permit him, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You better admit your uncle (into the house). I ('A'isha) said: It was the woman who suckled me and not the man. (But he) said: He is your uncle, admit him.

جَاءَ عَمِّي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَىَّ فَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ حَتَّى أَسْتَأْمِرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ إِنَّ عَمِّي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَىَّ فَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ عَمُّكِ قُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَ إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ

Aflah ibn AbulQu'ays entered upon me. I hid myself from him. He said: You are hiding yourself from me while I am your paternal uncle. She said: I said: From where? He said: The wife of my brother suckled you. She said: The woman suckled me and not the man. Thereafter the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me and I told him this matter. He said: He is your paternal uncle; he may enter upon you.

إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ

“My uncle through suckling came and asked permission (to enter) but I refused to admit him until I asked the Messenger of Allah. So the Messenger of Allah said: “Let him in since he is your uncle.’” She said: “It is only the woman who suckled me; I was not suckled by the man.’ So he said: ‘Indeed he is your uncle, so let him in.’”

جَاءَ عَمِّي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَىَّ فَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ حَتَّى أَسْتَأْمِرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ فَإِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ قَالَتْ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَ فَإِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ

"Let him in, for he is your paternal uncle." She said: "The woman breast-fed me, not the man." He said: "He is your paternal uncle, so let him visit you."

أَنَّ أَخَا أَبِي الْقُعَيْسِ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ بَعْدَ آيَةِ الْحِجَابِ فَأَبَتْ أَنْ تَأْذَنَ لَهُ فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ ائْذَنِي لَهُ فَإِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ

"My paternal uncle Aflah asked permission to enter upon me after the (Verse of) Hijab had been revealed, but I did not let him in. The Prophet came to me and I asked him (about that) and he said: 'Let him in, for he is your paternal uncle.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the woman breast-fed me, not the man.' He said: 'Let him in, may your hands be rubbed with dust, for he is your uncle.'"

قَالَتِ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَىَّ عَمِّي أَفْلَحُ بَعْدَ مَا نَزَلَ الْحِجَابُ فَلَمْ آذَنْ لَهُ فَأَتَانِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ ائْذَنِي لَهُ فَإِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَ ائْذَنِي لَهُ تَرِبَتْ يَمِينُكِ فَإِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ

“My paternal uncle through breastfeeding, Aflah bin Abu Qu'ais, came and asked permission to visit me, after the ruling on veiling had been enjoined, and I refused to let him in, until the Prophet came in and said: 'He is your paternal uncle; let him in.' I said: 'But it is the woman who breastfed me; the man did not breastfeed me.' He said: 'May your hands be rubbed with dust', or: 'May your right hand be rubbed with dust!”

أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَىَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَأْذَنِي لَهُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكِ أَوْ يَمِينُكِ

X“My paternal uncle through breastfeeding came to visit me and I refused to let him in. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Let your paternal uncle visit you.' I said: 'But it is the woman who breastfed me; the man did not breastfeed me.' He said: 'He is your paternal uncle; let him visit you.”

جَاءَ عَمِّي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَىَّ فَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ عَمُّكِ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَ إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ

[AI] "A'ishah reported that her uncle came to her after the command for women to observe the hijab was revealed, and she refused to give him permission. So I asked him why he wanted permission, and he said, 'Give him permission, for he is your uncle.' I said, 'The milk I drank was from a woman, not a man.' He said, 'May your right hand be covered in dust, give him permission, for he is your uncle.'"

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ جَاءَ عَمِّي بَعْدَمَا ضُرِبَ الْحِجَابُ فَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ ائْذَنِي لَهُ فَإِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ قُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ؟ قَالَ تَرِبَتْ يَمِينُكِ ائْذَنِي لَهُ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ عَمُّكِ

أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ ائْذَنِي لَهُ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ عَمُّكِ قُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَ تَرِبَتْ يَمِينُكِ هُوَ عَمُّكِ

[AI] "My uncle came to me from the breast-feeding and asked for permission from me after the curtain was struck. I said, 'I will not grant you permission until I seek permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So, I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'Let your uncle come in to you.' I said, 'Indeed, the woman breastfed me and the man did not breastfeed me.' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'He is your uncle, so let him come in to you.'"

جَاءَنِي عَمِّي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَيَّبَعْدَمَا ضُرِبَ الْحِجَابُ قُلْتُ لَا آذَنُ لَكَ حَتَّى أَسْتَأْذِنَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ عَمُّكِ قُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هُوَ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَلِجْ عَلَيْكِ

[AI] Abu Al-Quais came to visit Aisha and asked for her permission, but she did not give him permission. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, she said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Quais came to ask for permission to see me, but I did not give him permission." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He is your uncle, so let him enter upon you." I said, "I was breastfed by a woman, but not breastfed by a man." He said, "He is your uncle, so let him enter upon you."

إِنَّ أَبَا الْقُعَيْسِ أَتَى عَائِشَةَ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَيْهَا فَلَمْ تَأْذَنْ لَهُ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أَبَا قُعَيْسٍ جَاءَ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَيَّ فَلَمْ آذَنْ لَهُ فَقَالَ هُوَ عَمُّكِ فَلْيَدْخُلْ عَلَيْكِ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ هُوَ عَمُّكَ فَلْيَدْخُلْ عَلَيْكِ

[AI] She said, "My uncle came from the fosterage and he sought permission from me, but I refused to grant him permission until I asked the Prophet ﷺ." She said, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and I asked him, and he said, 'He is your uncle, so grant him permission.'" She said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was only breastfed by a woman and not by a man." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prohibitions of lineage are based on what is prohibited by birth."

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ جَاءَ عَمِّي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةَ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيَّ فَأَبَيْتُ أَنْ آذَنَ لَهُ حَتَّى أَسْأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَتْ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ عَمُّكِ فَأَذَنِي لَهُ» فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةٌ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَحْرُمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ مَنْ يَحْرُمُ مِنَ الْوِلَادَةِ»

"Let him in, for he is your paternal uncle." She said: "The woman breast-fed me, not the man." He said: "He is your paternal uncle, so let him visit you." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3315)
