The Prophet ﷺ said: “I stand in prayer intending to lengthen it, but then I hear a child crying, so I make my prayer brief, out of dislike for causing hardship to his mother.”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «إِنِّي لأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا، فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ».

The Prophet ﷺ said, "When I start the prayer I intend to prolong it, but on hearing the cries of a child, I cut short the prayer because I know that the cries of the child will incite its mother's passions."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنِّي لأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ إِطَالَتَهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ مِنْ بُكَائِهِ

The Prophet, said, "Whenever I start the prayer I intend to prolong it, but on hearing the cries of a child, I cut short the prayer because I know that the cries of the child will incite its mother's passions."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِنِّي لأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَأُرِيدُ إِطَالَتَهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ مِنْ بُكَائِهِ وَقَالَ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسٌ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِثْلَهُ

My father said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whenever I stand for prayer, I want to prolong it but on hearing the cries of a child, I would shorten it as I dislike to put its mother in trouble."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

When I begin the prayer I Intend to make it long, but I hear a boy cry. ing; I then shorten it because of his mother's feelings.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَدْخُلُ الصَّلاَةَ أُرِيدُ إِطَالَتَهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأُخَفِّفُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ بِهِ

I stand up to pray and intend to prolong it; but when I hear the cry of a boy I shorten if for fear that his mother might be distressed.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I start prayer and I want to make it long, but then I hear an infant crying, so I make my prayer short, because I know the distress caused to the mother by his crying.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ إِطَالَتَهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ لِوَجْدِ أُمِّهِ بِبُكَائِهِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I get up to perform prayer and I intend to make it long, but then I hear an infant crying, so I make it short, because I do not like to cause distress to his mother.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَوِّلَ فِيهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ

[Machine] Sa'id, Ibn Ja'far, and Abdul Wahhab al-Khaffaf reported from Sa'id who reported from Qatadah who reported from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ said, "I would enter the prayer and intend to prolong it, but then I would hear the crying of a baby. So, I would shorten my prayer out of knowing the intensity of his mother's worry due to his crying."

عَنْ سَعِيدٍ وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَعَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الْخَفَّافُ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَدْخُلُ الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطِيلَهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَاوَزُ فِي صَلَاتِي مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ مِنْ بُكَائِهِ

My father said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whenever I stand for prayer, I want to prolong it but on hearing the cries of a child, I would shorten it as I dislike to put its mother in trouble." (Using translation from Bukhārī 868)

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I start prayer and I want to make it long, but then I hear an infant crying, so I make my prayer short, because I know the distress caused to the mother by his crying.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 989)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي لَأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطِيلَهَا فَأَسْمَعَ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأُخَفِّفَ مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ بِهِ»

[Machine] "The prophet of Allah ﷺ used to say, 'I stand in prayer intending to prolong it, but when I hear the crying of a baby, I cut short my prayer out of empathy for its mother.'"

أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِنِّي لَأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أُطِيلُهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلَاتِي مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ بُكَائِهِ

اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم قَالَ إِنِّي لأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلاةِ وَأنا أُرِيدُ إِطَالَتَهَا فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاتِي مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ بِبُكَائِهِ

"إِنِّى لأَقومُ في الصَّلاةِ وأَنا أُريدُ أَنْ أُطوِّلَ فيها فأَسمَعُ بُكاءَ الصَّبىِّ فأَتَجَوَّزُ كراهية أَنْ يَشُقَّ على أُمِّهِ".

"إِنِّى لأدخُلُ فِى الصَّلَاةِ وَأَنَا أُريدُ أنْ أطِيلَها فَأسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصّبىّ. فَأتَجَوَّزُ فِى صَلاِتى مِمَّا أَعلَمُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمّهِ بِبُكَائِهِ" .

"إِنِّى لأقُومُ إِلَى الصَّلاِة وَأَنَا أريدُ أنْ أُطَوِّل فِيها. فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبىِّ فَأتَجَوَّزُ فِى صَلَاتِى كَرَاهيَة أَنْ أشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ".
