Messenger of Allah, I sported with a woman in the outskirts of Medina, and I have committed an offence short of fornication. Here I am (before you), kindly deliver verdict about me which you deem fit. Unar said: Allah concealed your fault. You had better conceal it yourself also. Allah's Apostle ﷺ, however, gave no reply to him. The man stood up and went away and Allah's Apostle ﷺ sent a person after him to call him and be recited this verse:" And observe prayer at the ends of the day and in the first hours of the night. Surely, good deeds take away evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful" (xi. 115). A person amongst the people said: Allah's Apostle, does it concern this marn only? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: No, but the people at large.

Following up with good deeds after committing sins may even dissolve the sin of having external physical intimacy someone other than your spouse

tirmidhi:3112Qutaybah > Abū al-Aḥwaṣ > Simāk b. Ḥarb > Ibrāhīm > ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad > ʿAbdullāh

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "I fondled a woman who lives on the outskirts of Madinah, and I did with her what is less than intercourse, and here I am, so judge in my case as you will." So ʿUmar said to him: "Allah covered ˹your sins˺, so you should have ˹kept them˺ covered yourself." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not give him any reply.

The man left but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man after him to call him back. He recited to him: "And perform Salāh, at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful (Hūd 11:114)" until the end of the āyah. A man among the people said: "Is this specific for him?" He ﷺ said: 'No. Rather for all of the people."

Abū ʿĪsá said: This ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīiḥ. This is how it was reported by Isrāʾīl > Simãk > Ibrāhīm > ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad > ʿAbdullãh from the Prophet ﷺ and it is similar. Sufyān al-Thawrī reported > Simāk > Ibrāhīm > ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd > ʿAbdullāh from the Prophet ﷺ similarly اnd the narrations of these people are more correct than the narration of al-Thawrī. Shuʿbah reported it > Simãk b. Ḥarb > Ibrāhīm > al-Aswad > ʿAbdullãh from the Prophet ﷺ similarly. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyá al-Naysabūrī reported > Muḥammad b. Yūsuf > Sufyān > al-Aʿmash and Simāk > Ibrāhīm > ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd > ʿAbdullāh from the Prophet ﷺ in the same meaning. Maḥmūd b. Ghaylān reported > al-Faḍl b. Mūsá > Sufyān > Simāk > Ibrāhīm > ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd > ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd from the Prophet ﷺ in the same meaning but he did not mention "from al-Aʿmash" in it. And Sulaymãn At-Taymī reported this ḥadīth from Abū ʿUthmãn al-Nahdi > Ibn Masʿūd from the Prophet ﷺ.

[Machine] I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a man has been afflicted by a woman whom it is not permissible for him to have relations with. He has not left anything that can afflict him from his wife except that it has afflicted him, except that he has not had intercourse with her." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform ablution well, then stand and pray." Then Allah revealed this verse {Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.} Mu'adh then asked, "Is this for him specifically, O Messenger of Allah, or for all Muslims in general?" He said, "For all Muslims in general."
