On the day of Hunayn we travelled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we journeyed for a long time until the evening came. I attended the prayer along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A horseman came and said: Messenger of Allah, I went before you and climbed a certain mountain where saw Hawazin all together with their women, cattle, and sheep, having gathered at Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: That will be the booty of the Muslims tomorrow if Allah wills. He then asked: Who will be on guard tonight? Anas ibn AbuMarthad al-Ghanawi said: I shall , Messenger of Allah. He said: Then mount your horse. He then mounted his horse, and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah said to him: Go forward to this ravine till you get to the top of it. We should not be exposed to danger from your side. In the morning the Apostle of of Allah ﷺ came out to his place of prayer, and offered two rak'ahs. He then said: Have you seen any sign of your horseman? They said: We have not, Messenger of Allah. The announcement of the time for prayer was then made, and while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying the prayer, he began to glance towards the ravine. When he finished his prayer and uttered salutation, he said: Cheer up, for your horseman has come. We therefore began to look between the trees in the ravine, and sure enough he had come. He stood beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saluted him and said: I continued till I reached the top of this ravine where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me, and in the morning I looked down into both ravines but saw no one. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him: Did you dismount during the night? He replied: No, except to pray or to relieve myself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You have ensured your entry to (Paradise). No blame will be attached to you supposing you do not work after it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2501)

عَنْ سَهْلِ ابْنِ الْحَنْظَلِيَّةِ أَنَّهُمْ سَارُوا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ فَأَطْنَبُوا السَّيْرَ حَتَّى كَانَ عَشِيَّةً وَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَارِسٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي انْطَلَقْتُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ حَتَّى طَلَعْتُ جَبَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَإِذَا أَنَا بِهَوَازِنَ عَلَى بَكْرَةِ أَبِيهِمْ بِظُعُنِهِمْ وَنَعَمِهِمْ وَشَائِهِمْ اجْتَمَعُوا إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ تِلْكَ غَنِيمَةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ غَدًا إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟» فَقَالَ أَنَسُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْثَدٍ الْغَنَوِيُّ أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ ارْكَبْ فَرَكِبَ فَرَسًا لَهُ فَجَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اسْتَقْبِلْ هَذَا الشِّعْبَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ فِي أَعْلَاهُ وَلَا تُغَرَّنَّ مِنْ قِبَلِكَ اللَّيْلَةَ» فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى مُصَلَّاهُ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «هَلْ حَسَسْتُمْ فَارِسَكُمْ؟» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا حَسَسْنَاهُ فَثَوَّبَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ يَلْتَفِتُ إِلَى الشِّعْبِ حَتَّى إِذَا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ «أَبْشِرُوا فَقَدْ جَاءَ فَارِسُكُمْ» فَجَعَلْنَا نَنْظُرُ إِلَى خِلَالِ الشَّجَرِ فِي الشِّعْبِ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَدْ جَاءَ حَتَّى وَقَفَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنِّي انْطَلَقْتُ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُ فِي أَعْلَا هَذَا الشِّعْبِ حَيْثُ أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ طَلَعْتُ الشِّعْبَيْنِ كِلَيْهِمَا فَنَظَرْتُ فَلَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «نَزَلْتَ اللَّيْلَةَ؟» فَقَالَ لَا إِلَّا مُصَلِّيًا أَوْ قَاضِيَ حَاجَةٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «قَدْ أَوْجَبْتَ فَلَا عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَعْمَلَ بَعْدَهَا»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will guard us tonight?" Abdullah replied, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "You sleep." He then repeated, "Who will guard us tonight?" I said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah," repeating it three times. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "So it is you." I kept guard until just before dawn when the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke me up saying, "You sleep." I fell asleep and we were only awakened by the heat of the sun on our backs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and performed ablution and the two units of the Fajr prayer. He then led us in the morning prayer, and after finishing, he said, "If Allah intended for you not to sleep, you would not have slept. However, He wanted it so for those who come after you as well." Then the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ camel and the camels of the people scattered. The people went looking for them and brought their camels back except the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ camel. Abdullah said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Take it here.'" So, I took it to where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told me and found its reins twisted around a tree. By Allah, no one but a hand could have released it. So, I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, by the one who sent you with the truth, I found its reins twisted around a tree and no one could have released it except a hand." The verse was then revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Indeed, We have given you a clear conquest."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟» قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَقُلْتُ أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ» ثُمَّ أَعَادَ «مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟» فَقُلْتُ أَنَا حَتَّى أَعَادَ مِرَارًا ثَلَاثَةً أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَأَنْتَ» فَحَرَسْتُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ وَجْهِ الصُّبْحِ أَدْرَكَنِي قَوْلُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ» فَنِمْتُ فَمَا أَيْقَظَنَا إِلَّا حَرُّ الشَّمْسِ فِي ظُهُورِنَا فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَنَعَ كَمَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ مِنَ الْوُضُوءِ وَرَكْعَتَيِ الْفَجْرِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِنَا الصُّبْحَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ لَوْ أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا تَنَامُوا عَنْهَا لَمْ تَنَامُوا وَلَكِنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَوْ قَالَ يَكُونُ لِمَنْ بَعْدِكُمْ فَهَكَذَا لِمَنْ نَامَ أَوْ نَسِيَ» ثُمَّ إِنَّ نَاقَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَإِبِلَ الْقَوْمِ تَفَرَّقَتْ فَخَرَجَ النَّاسُ فِي طَلَبِهَا فَجَاءُوا بِإِبِلِهِمْ إِلَّا نَاقَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «خُذْ هَا هُنَا» فَأَخَذْتُ حَيْثُ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَجَدْتُ زِمَامَهَا قَدِ الْتَوَى عَلَى شَجَرَةٍ وَاللهِ مَا كَانَتْ تَحُلُّهَا إِلَّا يَدٌ قَالَ فَجِئْتُ بِهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولُ اللهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَقَدْ وَجَدْتُ زِمَامَهَا مُلْتَوِيَةً عَلَى شَجَرَةٍ مَا كَانَتْ لِتَحُلَّهَا إِلَّا يَدٌ قَالَ وَنَزَلَتْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ {إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُبِينًا}

[AI] Abdullah said, when the Prophet ﷺ returned to Hudaybiyah, "Who will guard us tonight?" Abdullah replied, "I will." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Who will guard us tonight?" Abdullah responded again, "I will." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated, "Who will guard us tonight?" Abdullah replied, "The people remained silent, so I said, 'I will then.'" He said, "So I guarded them until the time of dawn came upon us." Abdullah continued, "I fell asleep and did not wake up until the heat of the sun was on our shoulders. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stood up and performed his usual actions." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If Allah had willed for you not to sleep, you would not have slept. However, Allah wanted it to be a Sunnah for those who come after you, for those who sleep or forget."

قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ لَمَّا رَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ زَمَانَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ قَالَ «مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟» قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ أَنَا قَالَ «إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟» قَالَ فَقُلْتُ أَنَا قَالَ «إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟» قَالَ «وَسَكَتَ الْقَوْمُ» فَقُلْتُ أَنَا قَالَ «فَأَنْتَ إِذًا» قَالَ «فَحَرَسْتُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ فِي وَجْهِ الصُّبْحِ أَدْرَكَنِي» مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَنِمْتُ فَمَا اسْتَيْقَظْتُ إِلَّا بِحَرِّ الشَّمْسِ عَلَى أَكْتَافِنَا فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَنَعَ كَمَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ» فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ لَا تَنَامُوا عَنْهَا لَمْ تَنَامُوا وَلَكِنْ أَرَادَ اللهُ أَنْ تَكُونَ سُنَّةً لِمَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ لِمَنْ نَامَ أَوْ نَسِيَ»

[AI] We were returning from Al-Hudaybiyah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when we got married. He asked, "Who will guard us for our prayers?" Shu'bah said, "Who will take care of us?" Bilal said, "I will." Al-Mas'udi narrated in his Hadith that he said to him, "You sleep." Then he asked again, "Who will guard us for our prayers?" Ibn Mas'ud said, "I said, 'I will, O Messenger of Allah.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You sleep, so I guarded them until the dawn broke. I then slept and we did not wake up except by the sun. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and did what he used to do. Then he said, "If Allah wanted you not to sleep, you would not have slept. But He wanted it to be for those who come after you, so do the same. Whoever among you sleeps or forgets..."

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَرْجِعَهُ مِنَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ فَعَرَّسْنَا فَقَالَ مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا لِصَلَاتِنَا؟ وَقَالَ شُعْبَةُ مَنْ يَكْلَؤُنَا؟ فَقَالَ بِلَالٌ أَنَا قَالَ الْمَسْعُودِيُّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا لِصَلَاتِنَا؟ فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قُلْتُ أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّكَ تَنَامُ فَحَرَسْتُهُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ فِي وَجْهِ الصُّبْحِ أَدْرَكَنِي مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَنِمْتُ فَمَا اسْتَيْقَظْنَا إِلَّا بِالشَّمْسِ قَالَ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَنَعَ مَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَوْ أَرَادَ أَنْ لَا تَنَامُوا عَنْهَا لَمْ تَنَامُوا وَلَكِنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ تَكُونَ لِمَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ فَهَكَذَا فَافْعَلُوا مَنْ نَامَ مِنْكُمْ أَوْ نَسِيَ
