‘Awf bin malik Al Ashja’I said “I went out with Zaid bin Harith in the battle of Mutah. For the reinforcement of the Muslim army a man from the people of Yemen accompanied me. He had only his sword with him. A man from the Muslims slaughtered a Camel. The man for the reinforcement asked him for a part of its skin which he gave him. He made it like the shape of a shield. We went on and met the Byzantine armies. There was a man among them on a reddish horse with a golden saddle and golden weapons. This Byzantinian soldiers began to attack the Muslims desperately. The man for reinforcement sat behind a rock for (attacking) him. He hamstrung his horse and overpowered him and then killed him. He took his horse and weapons. When Allah, Most High, bestowed victory on the Muslims. Khalid bin Al Walid sent for him and took his spoils. ‘Awf said “I came to him and said “Khalid, do you know that the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ had decided to give spoils to the killer? He said “Yes, I thought it abundant. I said “You should return it to him, or I shall tell you about it before the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. But he refused to return it. ‘Awf said “We then assembled with the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. I told him the story of the man of reinforcement and what Khalid had done. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said “Khalid, what made you do the work you have done?” He said “Apostle of Allaah ﷺ, I considered it to be abundant. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said “Khalid, return it to him what you have taken from him.” ‘Awf said “I said to him “here you are, Khalid. Did I not keep my word? The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said “What is that? I then informed him.” He said “The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ became angry and said “Khalid, do not return it to him. Are you going to leave my commanders? You may take from them what is best for you and eave to them what is worst.  

عَوْفٌ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا خَالِدُ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَضَى بِالسَّلَبِ لِلْقَاتِلِ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنِّي اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ قُلْتُ لَتَرُدَّنَّهُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْ لأُعَرِّفَنَّكَهَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَاجْتَمَعْنَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَصَصْتُ عَلَيْهِ قِصَّةَ الْمَدَدِيِّ وَمَا فَعَلَ خَالِدٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا خَالِدُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَا خَالِدُ رُدَّ عَلَيْهِ مَا أَخَذْتَ مِنْهُ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ دُونَكَ يَا خَالِدُ أَلَمْ أَفِ لَكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَمَا ذَلِكَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا خَالِدُ لاَ تَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ تَارِكُونَ لِي أُمَرَائِي لَكُمْ صِفْوَةُ أَمْرِهِمْ وَعَلَيْهِمْ كَدَرُهُ  

[Machine] Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ give all the spoils of war to the killer? He said, "Yes, but I have given him more than his share. By the oath of Allah, I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it." When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I told him the news and he called him and commanded him to give the rest of his share to the Muddadi (assisting soldier). So Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) complied. I said to him, "How did you see it, O Khalid? Did I not fulfill my promise to you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said, "O Khalid, do not give it to him and come to me." He said, "Are you abandoning me to my commanders? You have the best among them for their work and upon them are its consequences." His saying ﷺ , "O Khalid, do not give it to him," was intended for that specific time, then he commanded him again and he gave it to him.  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَفَّلَ السَّلَبَ كُلَّهُ لِلْقَاتِلِ؟ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنِّي اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ أَمَا لَعَمْرِ اللَّهِ لَأُعَرِّفَنَّهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهُ خَبَرَهُ فَدَعَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَدْفَعَ إِلَى الْمَدَدِيِّ بَقِيَّةَ سَلَبِهِ فَوَلَّى خَالِدٌ لِيَفْعَلَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَكَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ يَا خَالِدُ أَلَمْ أَفِ لَكَ بِمَا وَعَدْتُكَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَقَالَ «يَا خَالِدُ لَا تُعْطِهِ وَأَقْبِلْ عَلَيَّ» فَقَالَ «هَلْ أَنْتُمْ تَارِكُوا لِي أُمَرَائِي؟ لَكُمْ صَفْوَةُ أَمْرِهِمْ وَعَلَيْهِمْ كَدَرُهُ» قَوْلُهُ ﷺ «يَا خَالِدُ لَا تُعْطِهِ» أَرَادَ بِهِ فِي ذَلِكَ الْوَقْتِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ فَأَعْطَاهُ  

[Machine] That the messenger of Allah ﷺ did not give away the spoils and that a man named Maddiyyan was his companion in the Battle of Mu'tah on the outskirts of Syria, and they encountered the enemy. A Roman soldier intensified his attack on the Muslims and he was riding a chestnut horse with a golden saddle and a golden belt and a sword made of gold. He would strike with it, treating him gently, until the Maddadiyyan passed him, turning to attack his horse, and he fell. Then he climbed on him with a sword and killed him. When Allah defeated the Romans, evidence was found for the Maddadiyyan indicating that he killed him. Khalid gave him his sword and a fifth of his wealth. Awf said, "I spoke to Khalid ibn al-Walid and said, 'Don't you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ decreed that the spoils belong to the killer?' He said, 'Yes, but I wanted it for myself.'" Awf said, "There was a conversation between me and him." So I said, "By Allah, I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of your story." Awf said, "When we gathered with the Prophet ﷺ , Awf mentioned what had happened and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What prevented you from giving it to him?' Khalid said, 'I wanted it for myself.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Give it to him.' Awf said, 'I said to Khalid, 'How did you see, O Khalid? Did I not fulfill what I promised you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said to Khalid, 'Do not give it to him,' and he said, 'You are not leaving my command.'"  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَمْ يُخَمِّسِ السَّلَبَ وَأَنَّ مَدَدِيًّا كَانَ رَفِيقًا لَهُ فِي غَزْوَةِ مُؤْتَةَ فِي طَرَفِ الشَّامِ فَلَقُوا الْعَدُوَّ فَجَعَلَ الرُّومِيُّ مِنْهُمْ يَشْتَدُّ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَهُوَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ أَشْقَرَ وَسَرْجٍ مُذْهَبٍ وَمِنْطَقَةٍ مُلَطَّخَةٍ بِذَهَبٍ وَسَيْفٍ مُحَلًّى مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَيُغْزِي بِهِمْ فَيَلْطُفُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ الْمَدَدِيُّ حَتَّى مَرَّ بِهِ فَعَرْقَبَ فَرَسَهُ فَوَقَعَ ثُمَّ عَلَاهُ بِالسَّيْفِ فَقَتَلَهُ فَلَمَّا هَزَمَ اللهُ الرُّومَ قَامَتِ الْبَيِّنَةُ لِلْمَدَدِيِّ إِنَّهُ قَتَلَهُ فَأَعْطَاهُ خَالِدٌ سَيْفَهُ وَخُمْسَ مَالِهِ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَكَلَّمَتُ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ فَقُلْتُ أَمَا تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَضَى بِالسَّلَبِ لِلْقَاتِلِ؟ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنِّي اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ قَالَ عَوْفٌ وَكَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ كَلَامٌ فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ لَأُخْبِرَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَبَرَكَ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَلَمَّا اجْتَمَعْنَا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ذَكَرَ عَوْفٌ مَا كَانَ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَدْفَعَ إِلَيْهِ؟» فَقَالَ خَالِدٌ اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ قَالَ «ادْفَعْهُ إِلَيْهِ» قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَقُلْتُ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ يَا خَالِدُ أَلَمْ أُنْجِزْ لَكَ مَا وَعَدْتُكَ؟ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ لِخَالِدٍ «لَا تُعْطِهِ» وَقَالَ «مَا أَنْتُمْ بِتَارِكِي لِي أُمَرَائِي»  

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled for confiscation from the killer? He said, "Yes, but I increased it." I said, "You should return it to him or I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it." He said, "We will not return it to him." I said, "Fine." So we gathered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I narrated to him the story of Madadi and what Khalid did. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Khalid, what prompted you to do what you did?" Khalid said, "O Messenger of Allah, I increased it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Khalid, return to him what you took from him." Awf said, "I said to you, O Khalid, did I not warn you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What happened?" So I informed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said, "O Khalid, do not return it to him. Are you leaving my commanders for you, the elite of their affairs, while they face difficulties?"  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَضَى بِالسَّلَبِ لِلْقَاتِلِ؟ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنِّي اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ قُلْتُ لَتَرُدَّنَّهُ إِلَيْهِ أَوْ لَأُعَرِّفَنَّكَهَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَنْ نَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَاجْتَمَعْنَا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَصَصْتُ عَلَيْهِ قِصَّةَ الْمَدَدِيِّ وَمَا فَعَلَ خَالِدٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَا خَالِدُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قََالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَكْثَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَا خَالِد رُدَّ عَلَيْهِ مَا أَخَذْتَ مِنْهُ قَالَ عَوْفٌ فَقُلْتُ دُونَكَ يَا خَالِدُ أَلَمْ أَفِ لَكَ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا خَالِدُ لَا تَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ تَارِكُو لِي أُمَرَائِي لَكُمْ صَفْوَةُ أَمْرِهِمْ وَعَلَيْهِمْ كَدَرُهُ؟
