[AI] Narrated: There was a certain individual in Basra who possessed something, so I sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Surely, I would like for you to come to my home and pray in it, so I can turn it into a prayer place. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then approached, along with whoever among his companions he wished, and he prayed in that individual's home. They conversed and mentioned the hypocrites and the harm they cause, attributing that to Malik bin Dukhshin. They wished that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would invoke against him, so if he were to come to any harm, they said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had declared: Does he not bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah? They replied: O Messenger of Allah, he does say that but it is not in his heart. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: No one should bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah, for if he does while it is not in his heart, then he will be fed to the Fire or be touched by the Fire.

فَحَدِّثْنِي قَالَ كَانَ فِي بَصَرِي بَعْضُ الشَّيْءِ فَبَعَثْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَجِيءَ إِلَى مَنْزِلِي تُصَلِّيَ فِيهِ فَأَتَّخِذَهُ مُصَلًّى قَالَ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَنْزِلِهِ وَأَصْحَابُهُيَتَحَدَّثُونَ وَيَذْكُرُونَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَمَا يَلْقَوْنَ مِنْهُمْ وَيُسْنِدُونَ عِظَمَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى مَالِكِ بْنِ الدُّخَيْشِنِ وَوَدُّوا أَنْ لَوْ دَعَا عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَصَابَ شَرًّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ؟ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُ لَيَقُولُ ذَلِكَ وَمَا هُوَ فِي قَلْبِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا يَشْهَدُ أَحَدٌ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ فَتَطْعَمَهُ النَّارُ أَوْ تَمَسَّهُ النَّارُ

Something had gone wrong with my eyesight. I, therefore, sent (a message to the Holy Prophet): Verily it is my ardent desire that you should kindly grace my house with your presence and observe prayer there so, that I should make that corner a place of worship. He said: The Prophet ﷺ came there, and those amongst the Companions whom Allah willed also accompanied him. He entered (my place) and offered prayer at my residence and his Companions began to talk amongst themselves (and this conversation centered round hypocrites), and then the conspicuous one, Malik b. Dukhshum was made the target and they wished that he (the Holy Prophet) should curse him and he should die or he should meet some calamity. In the meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) completed his prayer and said: Does Malik b. Dukhshum not testify the fact that there is no god but Allah and verily I am the messenger of Allah. They replied: He makes a profession of it (no doubt) but does not do it out of (sincere) heart. He (the Holy Prophet) said: He who testifies that there is no god but Allah and I am the messenger of Allah would not enter Hell or its (flames) would not consume him. Anas said: This hadith impressed me very much and I told my son to write it down.

[AI] That a man by the name of 'Utba complained of his eye, so he sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what had afflicted him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, come and pray in my house so that I may make it a place of prayer." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and whoever among his companions Allah willed also came. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to pray while his companions were talking amongst themselves, mentioning what they had encountered from the hypocrites. They attributed the blame to Malik ibn Dukhsham. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished praying and said, "Isn't it witnessed that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" A person among them said, "Yes, it is witnessed, but not from the heart." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, the Hellfire shall not consume him." Or he said, "He shall not enter the Hellfire."

[AI] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, a river separates me and the mosque of my people, so I would like for you to come to me and pray in a place in my house that I have made a mosque." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We will do that." So when the morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Abu Bakr, and he followed him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, he said, "Where do you want?" I pointed to a spot in the house, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and we lined up behind him, and he prayed with us two units of prayer. We then built a fence around it and the people of the village heard, so they started to come, and the house became crowded. A man from the people asked, "Where is Malik ibn Dukhshum?" A man replied, "That is one of the hypocrites." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not say that, he says, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah' seeking the face of Allah with it." He said, "As for us, we see his face and hear his speech." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not say that, he says, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah' seeking the face of Allah with it." A man from the people said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If a slave fulfills this on the Day of Resurrection, saying, 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah' seeking the face of Allah with it, Allah will make forbidden for him the Fire." Mahmud narrated this to some people, among them was Abu Ayyub. He said, "I do not think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this." So I said, "If I return and the blind man is still alive, I will ask him." So I went to him and he was blind, but he was the leader of his people. I asked him, and he narrated to me just as he had before, and he was a Badri companion.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ السُّيُولَ تَحُولُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ مَسْجِدِ قَوْمِي فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي فَتُصَلِّيَ فِي مَكَانٍ فِي بَيْتِي أَتَّخِذُهُ مَسْجِدًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَنَفْعَلُ قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَدَا عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَاسْتَتْبَعَهُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَيْنَ تُرِيدُ؟ فَأَشَرْتُ لَهُ إِلَى نَاحِيَةٍ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصُفِفْنَا خَلْفَهُ فَصَلَّى بِنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَحَبَسْنَاهُ عَلَى خَزِيرٍ صَنَعْنَاهُ فَسَمِعَ أَهْلُ الدَّارِ يَعْنِي أَهْلَ الْقَرْيَةِ فَجَعَلُوا يَثُوبُونَ فَامْتَلَأَ الْبَيْتُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ أَيْنَ مَالِكُ بْنُ الدُّخْشُمِ؟ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ ذَاكَ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَقُولُهُ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَبْتَغِي بِهَا وَجْهَ اللهِ قَالَ أَمَّا نَحْنُ فَنَرَى وَجْهَهُ وَحَدِيثَهُ إِلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَقُولُهُ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَئِنْ وَافَى عَبْدٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ إِلَّا حُرِّمَ اللهُ عَلَى النَّارِ فَقَالَ مَحْمُودٌفَحَدَّثْتُ بِذَلِكَ قَوْمًا فِيهِمْ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ قَالَ مَا أَظُنُّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ هَذَا قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَئِنْ رَجَعْتُ وَعِتْبَانُ حَيٌّ لَأَسْأَلَنَّهُ فَقَدِمْتُ وَهُوَ أَعْمَى وَهُوَ إِمَامُ قَوْمِهِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَحَدَّثَنِي كَمَا حَدَّثَنِي أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَكَانَ عِتْبَانُ بَدْرِيًّا

[AI] My father, memorize this hadith, for it is from the treasures of hadith. When we finished, we went back to the city and asked about it. We found the person alive and he was an old blind man. We asked him about the hadith and he said, "Yes, my sight was lost during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . So I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, my sight is gone and I cannot pray behind you. If you can assign a mosque in my house and I pray in it, may it be considered my place of worship?' He said, 'Yes, I will come to you tomorrow.' When he finished the morning prayer the next day, he turned to me, stood up and approached me. He said, 'O 'Utbah, where do you want me to assign a place for you?' So I described a place for him and he assigned it to me. Then he prayed in it and stayed seated. The news reached the Ansar around us, so they came until the house was filled. They mentioned the hypocrites and the harm they cause, until they assigned one of the hypocrites, Malik bin Dukhshum, to handle their affairs. They said, 'Look at his position and the position of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was silent. When their talk became excessive, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Is it not true that there is no deity except Allah?' When it was the third time, they said, 'Indeed, he says it.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'By the One who sent me with the truth, if he says it with sincerity from his heart, the fire will never consume him.' They never rejoiced in anything as they did with what he said."

أحمد:١٦٤٨٤حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَازِمٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُدْعَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَدِمَ أَبِي مِنَ الشَّامِ وَافِدًا وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَلَقِينَا مَحْمُودَ بْنَ الرَّبِيعِ فَحَدَّثَ أَبِي حَدِيثًا عَنْ عِتْبَانَ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ

أَبِي أَيْ بُنَيَّ احْفَظْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ كُنُوزِ الْحَدِيثِ فَلَمَّا قَفَلْنَا انْصَرَفْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَسَأَلْنَا عَنْهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ حَيٌّ وَإِذَا شَيْخٌ أَعْمَى قَالَ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَنِ الْحَدِيثِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ ذَهَبَ بَصَرِي عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ذَهَبَ بَصَرِي وَلَاأَسْتَطِيعُ الصَّلَاةَ خَلْفَكَ فَلَوْ بَوَّأْتَ فِي دَارِي مَسْجِدًا فَصَلَّيْتُ فِيهِ فَأَتَّخِذُهُ مُصَلًّى قَالَ نَعَمْ فَإِنِّي غَادٍ عَلَيْكَ غَدًا قَالَ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى مِنَ الْغَدِ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَامَ حَتَّى أَتَاهُ فَقَالَ يَا عِتْبَانُ أَيْنَ تُحِبُّ أَنْ أُبَوِّئَ لَكَ؟ فَوَصَفَ لَهُ مَكَانًا فَبَوَّأَ لَهُ وَصَلَّى فِيهِ ثُمَّ حَبَسَ أَوْ جَلَسَ وَبَلَغَ مَنْ حَوْلَنَا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَجَاءُوا حَتَّى مُلِئَتْ عَلَيْنَا الدَّارُ فَذَكَرُوا الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَمَا يَلْقُونَ مِنْ أَذَاهُمْ وَشَرِّهِمْ حَتَّى صَيَّرُوا أَمْرَهُمْ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ الدُّخْشُمِ وَقَالُوا مِنْ حَالِهِ وَمِنْ حَالِهِ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَاكِتٌ فَلَمَّا أَكْثَرُوا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ قَالُوا إِنَّهُ لَيَقُولُهُ قَالَ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَنِي بِالْحَقِّ لَئِنْ قَالَهَا صَادِقًا مِنْ قَلْبِهِ لَا تَأْكُلُهُ النَّارُ أَبَدًا قَالَ فَمَا فَرِحُوا بِشَيْءٍ قَطُّ كَفَرَحِهِمْ بِمَا قَالَ

[AI] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, I have lost my sight, and the rivers block my way to my mosque. I wish you had come and prayed in my house, a place I could make a mosque." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I will do so, God willing." He then passed by Abu Bakr and followed him until they reached my house. He asked for permission to enter, and I granted it. He asked me, while I was standing, where I wanted to pray. I pointed to the spot where I desired, and he said, "Then I will confine you in a room that we have prepared for you." The people of the neighborhood, meaning the people of Dar, heard and rushed to him until the house was filled. A man asked, "Where is Malik ibn Dukhshun?" Perhaps he said Malik ibn Dukhayshin. Another man said, "That is a hypocrite who does not love Allah or His Messenger." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not say that. He says 'There is no deity but Allah' to seek the face of Allah." The man said, "But we see his face and hear his speech for the hypocrites." The Prophet ﷺ said again, "Do not say that. He says 'There is no deity but Allah' to seek the face of Allah." The man said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "A servant who says 'There is no deity but Allah' to seek the face of Allah will not be in Hell." Mahmoud said, "So I narrated this Hadith to a group of them, including Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari. He said, 'I do not think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said what you said.' I said, 'If I return to Atban, I will ask him.' So I went back to him and found that he was an elderly man who had lost his sight, but he was the leader of his people. I sat next to him and asked him about this Hadith, and he narrated it to me as he did the first time. Ma'mar said, 'And then the obligations and matters were revealed, and we believe that the matter has reached its conclusion. Whoever can prevent himself from being deceived, let him not be deceived."

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي قَدْ أَنْكَرْتُ بَصَرِي وَالسُّيُولُ تَحُولُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ مَسْجِدِي فَلَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّكَ جِئْتَ فَصَلَّيْتَ فِي بَيْتِي مَكَانًا أَتَّخِذُهُ مَسْجِدًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَفْعَلُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ قَالَ فَمَرَّ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَاسْتَتْبَعَهُ فَانْطَلَقَ مَعَهُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ أَيْنَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ؟ فَأَشَرْتُ لَهُ حَيْثُ أُرِيدُ قَالَ ثُمَّ حَبَسْتُهُ عَلَى خَزِيرٍ صَنَعْنَاهُ لَهُ فَسَمِعَ أَهْلُ الْوَادِي يَعْنِي أَهْلَ الدَّارِ فَثَابُوا إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى امْتَلَأَ الْبَيْتُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَيْنَ مَالِكُ بْنُ الدُّخْشُنِ؟ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ مَالِكُ بْنُ الدُّخَيْشِنِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ ذَاكَ رَجُلٌ مُنَافِقٌ لَا يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَلَا رَسُولَهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَلَا تَقُولُ هُوَ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَمَّا نَحْنُ فَنَرَى وَجْهَهُ وَحَدِيثَهُ إِلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَيْضًا لَا تَقُولُ هُوَ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ قَالَ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَلَنْ يُوَافِيَ عَبْدٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّااللهُ يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ إِلَّا حُرِّمَ عَلَى النَّارِ قَالَ مَحْمُودٌ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ نَفَرًا فِيهِمْ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ مَا أَظُنُّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ فَآلَيْتُ إِنْ رَجَعْتُ إِلَى عِتْبَانَ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَوَجَدْتُهُ شَيْخًا كَبِيرًا قَدْ ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ وَهُوَ إِمَامُ قَوْمِهِ فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ فَحَدَّثَنِيهِ كَمَا حَدَّثَنِيهِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ فَكَانَ الزُّهْرِيُّ إِذَا حَدَّثَ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ قَالَ ثُمَّ نَزَلَتْ فَرَائِضُ وَأُمُورٌ نَرَى أَنَّ الْأَمْرَ انْتَهَى إِلَيْهَا فَمَنْ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ لَا يَغْتَرَّ فَلَا يَغْتَرَّ

ذِكْرُ الْعُذْرِ السَّادِسِ: وَهُوَ خَوْفُ الْإِنْسَانِ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فِي طَرِيقِهِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ

Messenger of Allah, I have lost my eyesight and I lead my people in prayer. When there is a downpour there is then a current (of water) in the valley that stands between me and them and I find it impossible to go to their mosque and lead them in prayer. Messenger of Allah, I earnestly beg of you that you should come and observe prayer at a place of worship (in my house) so that I should then use it as a place of worship. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Well, it God so wills. I would soon do so. 'Itban said: On the following day when the day dawned, the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) came along with Abu Bakr at-Siddiq, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked permission (to get into the house). I gave him the permission, and be did not sit after entering the house, when he said: At what place in your house you desire me to say prayer? I ('Itban b. Malik) said: I pointed to a corner in the house, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood (at that place for prayer) and pronounced Allah-o-Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) (as an expression for the commencement of prayer). We too stood behind him, and he said two rak'ahs and then pronounced salutation (marking the end of the prayer). We detained him (the Holy Prophet) for the meat curry we had prepared for, him. The people of the neighbouring houses came and thus there was a good gathering in (our house). One of them said: Where is Malik b. Dukhshun? Upon this one of them remarked: He is a hypocrite; he does not love Allah and His Messenger. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not say so about him. Don't you see that he utters La ilaha ill-Allah (There is no god but Allah) and seeks the pleasure of Allah through it? They said: Allah and His Messenger know beet. One (among the audience) said: We see his inclination and wellwishing for hypocrites only. Upon this the Messenger of Allah' ﷺ again said: Verily Allah has forbidden the Fire for one who says: There is no god but Allah, thereby seeking Allah's pleasure. Ibn Shihab said: I asked Husain b. Muhammad al-Ansar (he was one of the leaders of Banu Salim) about the hadith transmitted by Mahmud b. Rabi' and he testified it. (Using translation from Muslim 33c)

أَنَّ عِتْبَانَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي قَدْ أَنْكَرْتُ بَصَرِي وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي لِقَوْمِي وَإِذَا كَانَ الْأَمْطَارُ سَالَ الْوَادِي الَّذِي بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُمْ وَلَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ آتِيَ مَسْجِدَهُمْ فَأُصَلِّيَ بِهِمْ وَدِدْتُ أَنَّكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ تَأْتِي فَتُصَلِّي فِي بَيْتِي حَتَّى أَتَّخِذَهُ مُصَلًّى قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «سَأَفْعَلُ» قَالَ عِتْبَانُ فَغَدَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ حِينَ ارْتَفَعَ النَّهَارُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَذِنْتُ لَهُ فَلَمْ يَجْلِسْ حِينَ دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَيْنَ تُحِبُّ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ مِنْ بَيْتِكَ؟ » قَالَ فَأَشَرْتُ إِلَى نَاحِيَةٍ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَكَبَّرَ فَقُمْنَا وَرَاءَهُ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ قَالَ «وَحَبَسْنَاهُ عَلَى خَزِيرَةٍ صَنَعْنَاهَا لَهُ»

[AI] Something happened to my eyesight, so I sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying that I would like for him to come and pray in my house so that I can make it a place of worship. The Prophet ﷺ, along with some of his companions whom Allah willed, came to me and he was praying in my house while his companions were talking amongst themselves and also mentioning the hypocrites. Then they reported this incident and the severity of it to Malik ibn Dukhshum and they wanted him to curse me so that I would die, or they wanted something bad to happen to me. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer and said, "Is it not true that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" They said that he said this, but it was not in his heart. He ﷺ said, "Anyone who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not enter the Fire or be fed by the Fire."

أَصَابَنِي فِي بَصَرِي بَعْضُ الشَّيْءِ فَبَعَثَتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي تُصَلِّي فِي مَنْزِلِي فَأَتَّخِذَهُ مُصَلًّى فَأَتَانِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَمَنْ شَاءَ اللهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فِي مَنْزِلِي وَأَصْحَابُهُ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَيُذَاكِرُونَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ ثُمَّ أَسْنَدُوا عِظَمَ ذَلِكَ وَكِبَرَهُ إِلَى مَالِكِ بْنِ الدُّخْشُمِ وَدُّوا أَنَّهُ دَعَا عَلَيْهِ فَهَلَكَ وَدُّوا أَنَّهُ أَصَابَهُ شَرٌّ فَقَضَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الصَّلَاةَ وَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟» قَالُوا أَنَّهُ يَقُولُ ذَاكَ وَمَا هُوَ فِي قَلْبِهِ قَالَ «لَا يَشْهَدُ أَحَدٌ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ فَيَدْخُلُ النَّارَ أَوْ يَطْعَمُهُ النَّارُ»

[AI] When 'Utban ibn Malik was injured in his eye, he sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "I would like for you to come to me and pray in my house and ask for blessings for us." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up among a group of his companions and they went to him. They spoke amongst themselves and mentioned Malik ibn Dukhshum, and some of them said, "O Messenger of Allah, that is the cave of the hypocrites and their dwelling place. They frequent it a lot." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Doesn't he pray?" They replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, but it is a prayer that has no good in it." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have forbidden the killing of those who pray," repeating it twice.

لَمَّا أُصِيبَ عِتْبَانُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فِي بَصَرِهِ بَعَثَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي فَتُصَلِّيَ فِي بَيْتِي وَتَدْعُوَ لَنَا بِالْبَرَكَةِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَتَحَدَّثُوا بَيْنَهُمْ فَذَكَرُوا مَالِكَ بْنَ الدُّخْشُمِ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ذَاكَ كَهْفُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَوَلَيْسَ يُصَلِّي؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَاةً لَا خَيْرَ فِيهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «نَهَيْتُ عَنْ قَتْلِ الْمُصَلِّينَ» مَرَّتَيْنِ

[AI] He told me that his sight went back to the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you came to my house and assigned a mosque in it, and you prayed in it, and I made it a mosque, even though my sight was gone and I was weak in going out to the mosque, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ promised him that he would come to him on a day. So when that day came, his companions gathered in my house and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and heard them talking, the people of Al-Madina being more severe towards the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and having more enmity towards him. They informed Malik Ibn Dukhshum about it, so the Prophet ﷺ asked them, "What are you discussing?" Malik Ibn Dukhshum asked them, "Doesn't he testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, he is a companion." He said, "Doesn't he testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?" They said, "Yes." He said, "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if he says it sincerely from his heart, it will never be the Fire that consumes him." Anas said to me, "Remember this hadith, for it is one of the treasures of knowledge." So when we came to Al-Madina, we found 'Utban bin Malik alive, so I said to my father, "Do you have anything to ask 'Utban about the hadith that Mahmoud narrated from him?" So we went and asked him about it, and he narrated it to us.

حَدَّثَنِي أَنَّهُ ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَلَوْ أَتَيْتَ مَنْزِلِي فَبَوَّأْتَ لِي فِيهِ مَسْجِدًا وَصَلَّيْتَ فِيهِ فَأَتَّخِذُهُ مَسْجِدًا وَإِنَّ بَصَرِي قَدْ ذَهَبَ وَضَعُفْتُ عَنِ الْخُرُوجِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَوَعَدَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا يَأْتِيَهُ فِيهِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ حَشَكَ لَهُ أَصْحَابَهُ فَاجْتَمَعُوا فِي مَنْزِلِي فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمِعَهُمْ يَتَذَاكَرُونَ أَشَدَّ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ عَلَى أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَعْظَمَهُمْ لَهُ عَدَاوَةً فَرَدُّوا ذَلِكَ إِلَى مَالِكِ بْنِ الدُّخْشُمِ فَسَأَلَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَا يَتَذَاكَرُونَ؟ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ؟» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُ صَاحِبُ قَالَ «أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ؟» قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ «وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ يَقُولُهَا صَادِقًا مِنْ قَلْبِهِ لَا تَأْكُلُهُ النَّارُ أَبَدًا» فَقَالَ لِي أَنَسٌ «احْفَظْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ كُنُوزِ الْعِلْمِ» فَلَمَّا أَتَيْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ وَجَدْنَا عِتْبَانَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حَيًّا فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي هَلْ لَكَ فِي عِتْبَانَ تَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْحَدِيثِ الَّذِي حَدَّثَنَاهُ مَحْمُودٌ عَنْهُ فَانْطَلَقْنَا فَسَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْهُ فَحَدَّثَنَا
