Jabir saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observing prayer. (The narrator Amr said: I do not know which prayer he was offering.) He (the Prophet) said: Allah is altogether great; Allah is altogether great; Allah is altogether great; and praise be to Allah in abundance; and praise be to Allah is abundance; and praise be to Allah in abundance. Glory be to Allah in the morning and after (saying it three times). I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil, from his puffing up (nafkh), his spitting (nafth) and his evil suggestion (hamz). He (Amr) said: His nafth it poetry, his nafkh is pride, and his hamz is madness.

أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي صَلاَةً قَالَ عَمْرٌو لاَ أَدْرِي أَىَّ صَلاَةٍ هِيَ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً ثَلاَثًا أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ مِنْ نَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ وَهَمْزِهِ قَالَ نَفْثُهُ الشِّعْرُ وَنَفْخُهُ الْكِبْرُ وَهَمْزُهُ الْمُوتَةُ

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up to pray at night (for tahajjud prayer) he uttered the takbir and then said: "Glory be to Thee, O Allah," and "Praise be to Thee" and "Blessed is Thy name," and Exalted is Thy greatness." and "There is no god but Thee." He then said: "There is no god but Allah" three times; he then said: "Allah is altogether great" three times: "I seek refuge in Allah, All-Hearing and All-Knowing from the accursed devil, from his evil suggestion (hamz), from his puffing up (nafkh), and from his spitting (nafth)" He then recited (the Qur'an). Abu Dawud said: It is said that this tradition has been narrated by 'Ali b. 'Ali from al-Hasan omitting the name of the Companion of the Prophet ﷺ. The misunderstanding occurred on the part of Ja'far.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ كَبَّرَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا ثَلاَثًا أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ السَّمِيعِ الْعَلِيمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ ثُمَّ يَقْرَأُ

"When Allah;s Messenger stood for Salat during the night, he would say the Takbir (Allahu Akbar), then say: (Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa Tabarakasmuka wa Ta'ala Jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk.) 'Glorious You are O Allah, and with Your praise, and blesses is Your Name, and exalted is Your majesty, and none has the right to be worshipped but You' Then he would say: (A'udhu Bilahi As-Sami'il-Alimi min Ash-Shaitanir-Rajimi, min Hamzihi Wa Nafkhihi wa Nafthihi.)" 'Allah is undoubtedly the greatest.' (Allahu Akbaru Kabira). Then he would say: 'I seek refuge in Allah the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the cursed Shaitan, from his madness, his arrogance, and his poetry.'

“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he started the prayer. He said: ‘Allahu Akbaru kabiran, Allahu Akbaru kabiran (Allah is the Most Great indeed),’ three times; ‘Al-hamdu Lillahi kathiran, al-hamdu Lillahi kathiran (Much praise is to Allah),’ three times; ‘Subhan Allahi bukratan wa asilan (Glory is to Allah morning and evening),’ three times; ‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minash-Shaitanir-rajim, min hamzihi wa nafkhihi wa nafthihi (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan, from his madness, his poetry, and his pride).”

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ قَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا ثَلاَثًا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا ثَلاَثًا سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ قَالَ عَمْرٌو هَمْزُهُ الْمُوتَةُ وَنَفْثُهُ الشِّعْرُ وَنَفْخُهُ الْكِبْرُ

[AI] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would get up at night, he would say: 'Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed is Your name and exalted is Your Majesty. There is no deity worthy of worship except You. I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan, the accursed, from his whispers, breaths, and blowing.' Then he would begin his prayer. Ja'far explained it as follows: 'His whispers refers to death, his breaths refers to poetry, and his blowing refers to arrogance.'"

[AI] I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying in the voluntary prayers: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, and Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, and Subhanallah bi bukratin wa aseela, Subhanallah bi bukratin wa aseela, Subhanallah bi bukratin wa aseela. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the cursed Satan, from his whispers, his spittle, and his blowing." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what are his whispers, his spittle, and his blowing?" He said, "As for his whispers, they are the death which seizes the son of Adam, and as for his spittle, it is old age, and as for his blowing, it is white hair."

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ فِي التَّطَوُّعِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا هَمْزُهُ وَنَفْثُهُ وَنَفْخُهُ؟ قَالَ أَمَّا هَمْزُهُ فَالْمُوتَةُ الَّتِي تَأْخُذُ ابْنَ آدَمَ وَأَمَّا نَفْخُهُ الْكِبْرُ وَنَفْثُهُ الشِّعْرُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, "Allah is the greatest, greatly. Praise be to Allah, abundantly. Glory be to Allah and with His praise, morning and evening. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan, from his whispering, blowing, and spitting." He said, "I said, 'What is his whispering?' He said, 'It is like the buzzing of a fly.' I said, 'Then what is his blowing?' He said, 'Arrogance.' I said, 'So what is his spitting?' He said, 'Poetry.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا هَمْزُهُ؟ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ كَهَيْئَةِ الْمُوتَةِ يَعْنِي يَصْرَعُ قُلْتُ فَمَا نَفْخُهُ؟ قَالَ الْكِبْرُ قُلْتُ فَمَا نَفْثُهُ؟ قَالَ الشِّعْرُ

[AI] He heard Abu Umamah al-Bahili say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he entered the night prayer, would say the takbeer (Allahu Akbar) three times, and then say the tasbeeh (Subhanallah) three times, and then say the tahleel (La ilaha illallah) three times. Afterwards, he would say, 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed devil, from his whisperings, his blowing, and his evil influence.'"

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيَّ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ كَبَّرَ ثَلَاثًا وَسَبَّحَ ثَلَاثًا وَهَلَّلَ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَشِرْكِهِ

[AI] "Abu Salama, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, used to say when he would get up at night: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed devil, from his whisperings, his breathing, and his blowing.'"

أَبُو سَلَمَةَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ

“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minash-Shaitanir-rajim, wa hamzihi wa nafkhihi wa nafthihi (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan, from his madness, his pride, and his poetry).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 808)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ يَقُولُ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ وَهَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ» قَالَ فَهَمْزُهُ الْمَوْتَةُ وَنَفْثُهُ الشِّعْرُ وَنَفْخُهُ الْكِبْرِيَاءُ «»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ used to say, when starting the prayer, "Allah is the greatest, the Most Great, and all praise is due to Allah abundantly. Glory be to Allah in the morning and evening." He would repeat this three times. Then he would say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan, from his whispers, his spitting, and his breath."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا» ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ»

[AI] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enter the prayer, he would say: 'Allah is the greatest, great. And all praise is due to Allah, abundantly, three times. Glory be to Allah in the morning and in the evening, three times. I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan, from his puffing, his whispering, and his blowing'."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَادَخَلَ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا * وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا ثَلَاثًا سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ بَكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا ثَلَاثًا أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ نَفْخِهِ وَهَمْزِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ»

[AI] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he entered into prayer and said, "Allah is the Greatest, three times. Praise be to Allah, abundantly, three times. Glory be to Allah, morning and evening, three times. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan, from his whisperings, breath, and insinuations."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا ثَلَاثًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا ثَلَاثًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا ثَلَاثًا اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ»

[AI] The Prophet (PBUH) used to say "Allahu Akbar" loudly three times at the beginning of the prayer, and "Alhamdulillah" three times after that. Then he would say "Subhanallah" three times. After that, he would say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from Satan, from his whisperings, from his spittle and from his blowing." He would also say, "Whispering is his poetry, his blowing is arrogance, and his spittle is the is the one who dies in his ailments."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَيَقُولُ «نَفْثُهُ الشِّعْرُ وَنَفْخُهُ الْكِبْرُ وَهَمْزُهُ الَّذِي يَمُوتُ فِي بَلَائِهِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say when he would rise from sleep at night, "Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, Allahumma ghfir li." Then he would say, "I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the cursed Satan, from his madness, evil, and blowing." Then he would recite the following, narrated to us by Abdullah bin Mas'ud, in a raised and standing voice.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ كَبَّرَ فَذَكَرَ اسْتِفْتَاحَهُ بِسُبْحَانَكَ اللهُمَّ وَبِالتَّهْلِيلِ وَالتَّكْبِيرِ بَعْدَهُ ثَلَاثًا أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ السَّمِيعِ الْعَلِيمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ ثُمَّ يَقْرَأُ وَرُوِّينَاهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ مَرْفُوعًا وَمَوْقُوفًا

[AI] "Omar, when he entered the prayer, used to say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the greatest), then he would say "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, tabarakasmuka wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk" (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You, blessed is Your name and exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god but You), then he seeks refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed, then he recites what is clear to him from the Quran."

أَنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ كَانَ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ سُبْحَانَكَ اللهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ ثُمَّ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ ثُمَّ يَقْرَأُ مَا بَدَا لَهُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up to pray at night (for tahajjud prayer) he uttered the takbir and then said: "Glory be to Thee, O Allah," and "Praise be to Thee" and "Blessed is Thy name," and Exalted is Thy greatness." and "There is no god but Thee." He then said: "There is no god but Allah" three times; he then said: "Allah is altogether great" three times: "I seek refuge in Allah, All-Hearing and All-Knowing from the accursed devil, from his evil suggestion (hamz), from his puffing up (nafkh), and from his spitting (nafth)" He then recited (the Qur'an). Abu Dawud said: It is said that this tradition has been narrated by 'Ali b. 'Ali from al-Hasan omitting the name of the Companion of the Prophet ﷺ. The misunderstanding occurred on the part of Ja'far. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 775)

"اللهُ أكْبَرُ، اللهُ أكبَرُ كبِيرًا، الله أكَبرُ كبِيرًا، الله أكبَرُ كبِيرًا، والحَمْدُ لله كثيرًا، وسبحان اللهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا، ثَلاثًا، أَعوذ بالله من الشَّيطَان الرَّجِيم، من نَفْخِهِ ونَفْثِهِ وَهَمْزه".

"كان النبى ﷺ إِذَا كَبَّرَ لِلصَّلَاةِ قَالَ: سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ، وَلَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ، فَإِذَا تَعَوَّذَ قَالَ: أَعُوذُ بِالله مِنْ هَمْزَةِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ".

" عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِم قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ الضُّحَى، فَقَالَ حِينَ افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا - ثَلَاثًا - والْحَمْد لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا - ثَلَاثًا - وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا - ثَلَاثًا - الَّلهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ، وَنَفْخِهِ، وَنَفْثِهِ".

"كَانَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَاسْتَفْتَحَ صَلَاتَهُ كبَّر ثُمَّ قَالَ: "سُبحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبحَمِدكَ، تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّك، وَلَا إِلَهَ غيْرُكَ، ثُمَّ هَلَّلَ ثَلَاثًا، ويكبِّر ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يَقُول: أَعُوذُ بِالله الْعَلِيم مِنَ الشَّيْطَان الرَّجِيم".
