that a man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "What is Īmān (faith)?" He said, "If you are happy with your good deeds and are saddened by your bad deeds, then you are a believer." The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, then what is sin?” He said, "If something ˹you do˺ troubles you within, then you should abandon it." (Using translation from Aḥmad 22166)   

أحمد:٢٢١٥٩ – حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا رَبَاحٌ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ يَقُولُ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا الْإِثْمُ؟ فَقَالَ إِذَا حَكَّ فِي نَفْسِكَ شَيْءٌ فَدَعْهُ قَالَ فَمَا الْإِيمَانُ؟ قَالَ إِذَا سَاءَتْكَ سَيِّئَتُكَ وَسَرَّتْكَ حَسَنَتُكَ فَأَنْتَ مُؤْمِنٌ

[Machine] I heard Abu Umamah say: A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "What is faith?" He replied, "When your good deeds make you happy and your bad deeds make you remorseful, then you are a believer."  

الحاكم:٣٤ – فَحَدَّثَنَاهُ مُكْرَمُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْقَاضِي ثنا أَبُو قِلَابَةَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ كَثِيرٍ الْعَنْبَرِيُّ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَبِي سَلَّامٍ قَالَ
