Bilal would call the Adhan, then he used come to wait. When he would see that the prophet ﷺ had come out (of his house), he would pronounce the iqama. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 537)
كَانَ مُؤَذِّنُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يُؤَذِّنُ ثُمَّ لَا يُقِيمُ يُمْهِلُ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَدْ خَرَجَ أَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ

The Mu'adh-dhin of Messenger of Allah would wait and he would not call the Iqamah until he saw the Messenger of Allah had come out, he would call the Iqamah when he saw him."
سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ يَقُولُ كَانَ مُؤَذِّنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُمْهِلُ فَلاَ يُقِيمُ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ خَرَجَ أَقَامَ الصَّلاَةَ حِينَ يَرَاهُ

[Machine] The Prophet's muezzin would call for prayer, then wait. And when he saw the Prophet approaching, he would start reciting the adhan.
«كَانَ مُؤَذِّنُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يُؤَذِّنُ ثُمَّ يُمْهِلُ فَإِذَا رَأَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَدْ أَقْبَلْ أَخَذَ فِي الْإِقَامَةِ»
[Machine] The caller of prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would give the call to prayer and then wait. He would not establish the prayer until he saw the Prophet ﷺ had come out, then he would establish the prayer when he saw him.
«كَانَ مُؤَذِّنُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يُؤَذِّنُ ثُمَّ يُمْهِلُ فَلَا يُقِيمُ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَدْ خَرَجَ أَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ حِينَ يَرَاهُ»
"كَانَ مُؤَذِّنُ النَّبِىِّ ﷺ يُمْهِلُ فَلاَ يُقيِمُ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى النّبِىَّ ﷺ قَدْ خَرَجَ أَقَامَ الصَّلاَةَ (حِينَ (*) يرَاهُ".
"عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ قَاَل: كَان مُؤَذِّنُ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ يُؤَذِّنُ ثُمَّ يُمْهِلُ فَلاَ يُقِيمُ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى النَّبِىَّ ﷺ قَدْ خَرَجَ أَقَامَ الصَّلاَةَ حِينَ يَرَاهُ".
"عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ: كَانَ مُؤَذِّنُ النَّبِىِّ ﷺ يُؤَذّنُ وَلاَ يُقِيمُ، يَمْهَلُ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى النَّبِىَّ ﷺ قَدْ خَرَجَ أَقَامَ الصَّلاَة حِينَ يَرَاهُ".
