The Prophet, Abu Bakr and ʿUmar used to start the prayer with "Al hamdu li l-lahi Rabbi l-ʿalamin (All praise is but to Allah, Lord of the Worlds).

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ ؓ كَانُوا يَفْتَتِحُونَ الصَّلاَةَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ}

'Umar b. al-Khattab used to recite loudly these words: Subhanak Allahumma wa bi hamdika wa tabarakasmuka wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuka [Glory to Thee,0 Allah, and Thine is the Praise, and Blessed is Thy Name. and Exalted is Thy Majesty. and there is no other object of worship beside Thee]. Qatada informed in writing that Anas b. Malik had narrated to him: I observed prayer behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and Umar and 'Uthman. They started (loud recitation) with: AI-hamdu lillahi Rabb al-'Alamin [All Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds] and did not recite Bismillah ir- Rahman-ir-Rahim (loudly) at the beginning of the recitation or at the end of it.

أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ بِ { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} لاَ يَذْكُرُونَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فِي أَوَّلِ قِرَاءَةٍ وَلاَ فِي آخِرِهَا

The Prophet(peace be upon hm), Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthman used to begin the recitation with “Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe.”

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ كَانُوا يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ }

"Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman opened the Salat with (Al-Hamdu-lillahi rabbil-alamin)."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَعُثْمَانُ يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ )

The Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, would start their recitation with: "All the praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of all that exists.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ؓ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ }

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ ؓ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَجْهَرُ بِ { بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ }

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr and ‘Umar used to start their recitation with ‘All the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of all that exists (Al-hamdu Lillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin).” [1:2]

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ}

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet ﷺ used to start his recitation with ‘All the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of all that exists’ (Al-hamdu Lillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin),’ [1:2]

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَفْتَتِحُ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ}

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to commence the prayer with the takbir (saying "Allahu Akbar") and commence the recitation with "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'alameen" (Praise be to Allah, Lord of all the worlds) [Al-Fatihah: 2]. And he concludes it with the tasleem (saying "Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah")

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَفْتَتِحُ الصَّلَاةَ بِالتَّكْبِيرِ وَيَفْتَتِحُ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {الحمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] وَيَخْتِمُهَا بِالتَّسْلِيمِ

[AI] "The Prophet, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman used to begin reciting by saying, 'Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds' [Al-Fatiha 2]." Abu Muhammad said, 'With this, we say, and I do not see the need to audibly say 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ كَانُوا يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2]

[AI] I asked Anas if the Prophet ﷺ used to recite "Bismillah hir Rahman ir Raheem" [Al-Fatiha 1] or "Al hamdu lillahi Rabbil 'alamin" [Al-Fatiha 2]. He said, "You ask me about something that I do not remember or that no one has asked me before."

سَأَلْتُ أَنَسًا أَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقْرَأُ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] أَوْ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ مَاأَحْفَظُهُ أَوْ مَا سَأَلَنِي أَحَدٌ قَبْلَكَ

I observed prayer along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and with Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with all of them), but I never heard any one of them reciting Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim loudly. (Using translation from Muslim 399a)

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَأُ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتَفْتِحُ الْقِرَاءَةَ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ مَا سَأَلَنِي عَنْهُ أَحَدٌ

[AI] "I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , as well as behind Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and they would not audibly recite 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' (Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem) in Surah Al-Fatiha."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكَانُوا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1]

[AI] Narrated Anas bin Malik: I asked the Prophet ﷺ if he used to begin reciting the Quran with "Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) or with "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alameen" (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds)? He replied, "You asked me about something no one has asked me before."

أَخْبَرَنَا قَالَقُلْتُ لِأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتَفْتِحُ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] أَوْ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ مَا سَأَلَنِي عَنْهُ أَحَدٌ

Shu'bah said: I asked Qatadah, 'Did you hear this from Anas?' He replied, 'Yes, we asked him about it.'"

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ يَكُونُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فَقُلْتُ لِقَتَادَةَ أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ أَنَسٍ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ نَحْنُ سَأَلْنَاهُ عَنْهُ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ كَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] إِلَّا أَنَّ حُمَيْدًا لَمْيَذْكُرِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman used to start the recitation after the takbeer with "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alameen" [Surah Al-Fatiha Verse 2] in the prayer. A'ffan, meaning in prayer after the takbeer.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ كَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بَعْدَ التَّكْبِيرِ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] فِي الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ عَفَّانُ يَعْنِي فِي الصَّلَاةِ بَعْدَ التَّكْبِيرِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthman used to start their recitation with “All praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of all that exists. (Al- hamdu Lillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin).’” [1:2] (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 812)

أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْتَفْتِحُ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Humayd at-Tawil that Anas ibn Malik said, "I stood behind Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman and none of them used to recite 'In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate' when they began the prayer."

قُمْتُ وَرَاءَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَكُلُّهُمْ كَانَ لاَ يَقْرَأُ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلاَةَ

[AI] "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds." (Surah Al-Fatiha 1:2)

So, I said to my father, "Sa'eed informed you that Ibn Abbas said, 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' is a verse." He replied, "Yes."

{بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الفاتحة 2] فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي لَقَدْ أَخْبَرَكَ سَعِيدٌ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} [الفاتحة 1] آيَةٌ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 907)

«صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا يَجْهَرْ بِبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

[AI] "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, did not utter aloud 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'"

«وَكَانَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا لَا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} »

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) did not recite 'Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim' loudly, but they used to recite 'Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin' aloud."

«أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا لَمْ يَكُونُوا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ} وَكَانُوا يَجْهَرُونَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ}»

قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيّ ﷺ وَأبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ؓ يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ب { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ العالمين} ويسلموا تسليمة

قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيّ ﷺ وَأبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ ب { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رب العالمين}

قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وعُثمَان فَكَانُوا يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَة ب { الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رب العلمين}

[AI] "That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to start the recitation with {Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds}. And Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman used to do the same."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَسْتَفْتِحُ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ {الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَعُثْمَانُ ؓ

The Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, would start their recitation with: "All the praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of all that exists. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 902)

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

"I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, and I did not hear any of them say out loud: In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 907)

«صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَجْهَرُ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ»

[AI] I prayed behind Umar ibn al-Khattab, and he recited aloud "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَجَهَرَ بِبِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

"أنَّ النبيَّ ﷺ وأبَا بكر، وعمرَ، وعثمانَ كانُوا يستفتحونَ القراءةَ بالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالمِينَ".

"صليتُ خلفَ النبىِّ ﷺ ، وأبِى بكرٍ، وعمرَ، وعثمانَ فلم يجهرْ ببِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ".

" عَنْ مَالِكِ بن دِينَار، عَنْ أَنَسٍ: صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ وأَبِى بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعثمَانَ فَكَانُوا يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِالْحَمْد لله رَبِّ الْعَالمِينَ، ويَقْرَأونَ مَالِكِ يَوْم الدِّين ".
