The Prophet ﷺ said: When one of you prays, and he does not know whether he prayed more or less rak'ahs (than those prescribed by the Shari'ah), he should perform two prostrations while he is sitting. If the devil comes to him, and tells him (suggests him): "You have been defiled," he should say: "You have told a lie," except that he feels smell with his nose, or sound with his ears (then his ablution will break). These are the wording; of the tradition reported by Aban. Abu Dawud said: Ma'mar and 'Abi b. al-Mubarak mentioned the name "Iyad b. Hilal and al-Awza'i mentioned the name of Iyad b. Abi Zuhair.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ زَادَ أَمْ نَقَصَ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ قَاعِدٌ فَإِذَا أَتَاهُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلاَّ مَا وَجَدَ رِيحًا بِأَنْفِهِ أَوْ صَوْتًا بِأُذُنِهِ وَهَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبَانَ

[Machine] I said to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, "One of us prays but does not know how much he has prayed." He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If any one of you prays and does not know how much he has prayed, he should perform two prostrations while sitting. And if one of you is unsure whether he has spoken, he should say, 'I have not spoken except what my nose has smelled or my ear has heard.'"

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ أَحَدُنَا يُصَلِّي فَلَا يَدْرِي كَمْ صَلَّى فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ كَمْ صَلَّى فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ وَإِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلَّا مَا وَجَدَ رِيحَهُ بِأَنْفِهِ أَوْ سَمِعَ صَوْتَهُ بِأُذُنِهِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If one of you prays and forgets how many units he has prayed or doubts whether he added or subtracted, then he should prostrate twice while sitting. And if Satan comes to one of you and says that you have committed something wrong, then he should say, "You are lying except for what I heard with my own ears or smelled with my own nose."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَنَسِيَ كَمْ صَلَّى أَوْ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ زَادَ أَمْ نَقَصَ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ وَإِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلَّا مَا سَمِعَهُ بِأُذُنِهِ أَوْ وَجَدَ رِيحَهُ بِأَنْفِهِ

[Machine] Indeed, one of us may pray without knowing how much he has prayed. So he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If one of you prays and does not know how much he has prayed, then let him perform two prostrations while sitting. And when one of you is approached by Satan and he says, 'You have done something new in your prayer,' then let him say, 'I have not done anything new except that I sensed a smell with my nose or heard a sound with my ear.'"

إِنَّ أَحَدَنَا يُصَلِّي فَلَا يَدْرِي كَمْ صَلَّى؟ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ كَمْ صَلَّى فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَإِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فِي صَلَاتِكَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلَّا مَا وَجَدَ رِيحًا بِأَنْفِهِ أَوْ سَمِعَ صَوْتًا بِأُذُنِهِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "If the Satan whispers to anyone of you during his prayer and says, 'Have you not spoken too much?', then he should say within himself, 'I have lied', until he hears a voice in his ear or detects a smell with his nose. And if any one of you is unsure whether he has prayed four or five, let him perform two prostrations while he is sitting."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا شَبَّهَ عَلَى أَحَدِكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ وَهُوَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَقَالَ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ فِي نَفْسِهِ كَذَبْتَ حَتَّى يَسْمَعَ صَوْتًا بِأُذُنَيْهِ أَوْ يَجِدَ رِيحًا بِأَنْفِهِ وَإِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ أَزَادَ أَمْ نَقَصَ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If one of you prays and does not know how many units of prayer they have performed, they should perform two prostrations. If the Satan approaches them and says, 'You have made a mistake,' they should say, 'I have not, except for what I detected in my nose or heard in my ear.'"

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ كَمْ صَلَّى فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ فَإِنْ أَتَاهُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلَّا مَا وَجَدَ رِيحًا بِأَنْفِهِ أَوْ صَوْتًا بِأُذُنِهِ

[Machine] I asked Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri and said, "One of us prays but doesn't know how much he has prayed. "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If any one of you prays and is unsure of how much he has prayed, let him prostrate twice while sitting. And if any one of you doubts that he has spoken, let him say, 'I have not spoken except by feeling a smell from his nose or hearing a sound from his ear.'"

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ أَحَدُنَا يُصَلِّي فَلَا يَدْرِي كَمْ صَلَّى قَالَ فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ كَمْ صَلَّى فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ وَإِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلَّا مَا وَجَدَ رِيحًا بِأَنْفِهِ أَوْ سَمِعَ صَوْتًا بِأُذُنِهِ «»

[Machine] I asked Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and said, "One of us prays but does not know how much he has prayed." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If anyone of you prays and does not know how much he has prayed, he should prostrate two prostrations. And if Satan comes to anyone and says, 'You have prayed', let him say, 'I have not prayed,' except if he finds the smell of something or hear a sound with his ears."

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ أَحَدُنَا يُصَلِّي فَلَمْ يَدْرِ كَمْ صَلَّى قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ كَمْ صَلَّى فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَإِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلَّا مَا وَجَدَ رِيحًا بِأَنْفِهِ أَوْ سَمِعَ صَوْتًا بِإِذْنِهِ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you prays and does not remember whether they have prayed three or four (rak'ahs), they should perform two prostrations while sitting. And if one of you is approached by Satan and he says, 'You have done such and such,' they should say, 'I deny it, except what I heard with my ears or smelled with my nose.'"

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَمْ يَدْرِ ثَلَاثًا صَلَّى أَمْ أَرْبَعًا فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ وَإِذَا أَتَى أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ كَذَبْتَ إِلَّا مَا سَمِعَ صَوْتَهُ بِأُذُنِهِ أَوْ وَجَدَ رِيحَهُ بِأَنْفِهِ»

[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "When the Shaytan comes to one of you and says, 'You have done such and such,' let him say in himself, 'You are lying,' until he hears a voice in his ear or feels a foul smell with his nose."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ فِي نَفْسِهِ كَذَبْتَ حَتَّى يَسْمَعَ صَوْتًا بِأُذُنِهِ أَوْ يَجِدَ رِيحًا بِأَنْفِهِ»
