My husband, Aws ibn as-Samit, pronounced the words: You are like my mother. So I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, complaining to him about my husband. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disputed with me and said: Remain dutiful to Allah; he is your cousin. I continued (complaining) until the Qur'anic verse came down: "Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband..." [58:1] till the prescription of expiation. He then said: He should set free a slave. She said: He cannot afford it. He said: He should fast for two consecutive months. She said: Messenger of Allah, he is an old man; he cannot keep fasts. He said: He should feed sixty poor people. She said: He has nothing which he may give in alms. At that moment an araq (i.e. date-basket holding fifteen or sixteen sa's) was brought to him. I said: I shall help him with another date-basked ('araq). He said: You have done well. Go and feed sixty poor people on his behalf, and return to your cousin. The narrator said: An araq holds sixty sa's of dates. Abu Dawud said: She atoned on his behalf without seeking his permission. Abu Dawud said: This man (Aws b. al-Samit) is the brother of 'Ubadah b. al-Samit.

[Machine] He entered upon me one day and spoke to me about something while he was in a state of anger. I responded to him, saying, "You are like the back of my mother." Then he left and sat with his companions. He returned to me and wanted something from me, but I refused. He became more harsh with me, so I became harsh with him and overpowered him with what women use to overpower weak men. I said, "No, by the One in whose hand is the soul of Khawla, you will not reach her until Allah passes judgment on me and on you." So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and complained to him about what I had encountered from him. He said, "Your husband and your cousin fear Allah." Then Allah revealed (in Surah Al-Mujadilah), "Indeed, Allah has heard the statement of the one who argues with you concerning her husband." This continued until the expiation was fulfilled. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Order him to free a slave." She said, "O Messenger of Allah, he does not have a slave to free." He said, "Then let him fast for two consecutive months." She said, "O Messenger of Allah, he is an old man and does not have the ability to fast." He said, "Then let him feed sixty poor people." She said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not have anything to feed them with." He said, "Then we will help him with a basket of dates." And a basket of dates is approximately thirty Sa'. I said, "And I will assist him with another basket of dates." He said, "You have done well. Let him charity with it."

I resisted and he became more aggressive, so I became more aggressive towards him. I defeated him in the same way a weak woman defeats a man. So, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to complain about what I had experienced from him. He said, "Your husband and your cousin. Fear Allah."
