[AI] The heads of the Khawarij were brought to Damascus and were placed on a platform. People started looking at them, and I also went to see them. Then Abu Umamah came on a donkey, wearing a yellowish shirt. He looked at them and said, "What has Shaytan done to this Ummah?". He repeated it three times, "The worst of those killed under the sky are better than the best of those killed under the sky. Those who killed them are the dogs of Hellfire." He repeated it three times, then he cried and left. Abu Ghaleb said, "I followed him and asked, 'I heard you say something, did you really say it?'. He said, 'Subhan Allah, Indeed, I am very bold. Rather, I have heard it from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , repeatedly.'" I told him, "I saw you crying." He said, "Out of mercy for them, they were once from the people of Islam." Then he said to me, "Do you recite?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then recite from the family of Imran." So, I recited, and he said, "Do you hear what Allah says, 'But those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific.' There is deviation in the hearts of these people, so read up to the beginning of the hundredth verse." So, I recited until I reached, 'On the Day when some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black. As for those whose faces turn black (to them will be said): "Did you disbelieve after your belief?"' I said, 'O Abu Umamah, are they those people?' He said, 'Yes, they are those people.' This hadith has not been narrated except by Khalid bin Dailaj and Al-Walid."

جِيءَ برُءُوسِ الْخَوَارِجِ فَنُصِبَتْ عَلَى دَرَجِ دِمَشْقَ فَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيْهَا وَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا فَجَاءَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ عَلَى حِمَارٍ وَعَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ سُنْبُلَانِيٌّ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ «مَا صَنَعَ الشَّيْطَانُ بِهَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ؟» يَقُولُهَا ثَلَاثًا «شَرُّ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاءِ هَؤُلَاءِ خَيْرُ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاءِ مَنْ قَتَلَهُ هَؤُلَاءِ كِلَابُ النَّارِ» يَقُولُهَا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ بَكَى ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ أَبُو غَالِبٍ فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ قَوْلًا قَبْلُ أَفَأَنْتَ قُلْتَهُ؟ قَالَ «سُبْحَانَ اللهِ إِنِّي إِذًا لَجَرِيءٌ بَلْ سَمِعْتُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِرَارًا» قُلْتُ لَهُ رَأَيْتُكَ تَبْكِي فَقَالَ «رَحْمَةً لَهُمْ كَانُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ مَرَّةً» ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي «أَمَا تَقْرَأُ؟» قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ «فَاقْرَأْ مِنْ آلِ عِمْرَانَ» فَقَرَأْتُ فَقَالَ أَمَا تَسْمَعُ اللهَ يَقُولُ {فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ زَيْغٌ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ} كَانَ فِي قُلُوبِ هَؤُلَاءِ زَيْغٌ فَزِيغَ بِهِمْ اقْرَأْ عِنْدَ رَأْسِ الْمِئَةِ فَقَرَأْتُ حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغْتُ {يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ اسْوَدَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ أَكَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ} فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ إِنَّهُمْ هَؤُلَاءِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَهُمْ هَؤُلَاءِ «لَمْ يَرْوِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ خُلَيْدِ بْنِ دَعْلَجٍ إِلَّا الْوَلِيدُ»

ʿAli sent a piece of gold to the Prophet ﷺ who distributed it among four persons: Al-Aqra' bin HʿAbis Al-Hanzali from the tribe of Mujashi, 'Uyaina bin Badr Al-Fazari, Zaid at-Ta'i who belonged to (the tribe of) Bani Nahban, and 'Alqama bin Ulatha Al-ʿAmir who belonged to (the tribe of) Bani Kilab. So the Quraish and the Ansar became angry and said, "He (i.e. the Prophet, ) gives the chief of Najd and does not give us." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I give them) so as to attract their hearts (to Islam)." Then a man with sunken eyes, prominent checks, a raised forehead, a thick beard and a shaven head, came (in front of the Prophet ﷺ ) and said, "Be afraid of Allah, O Muhammad!" The Prophet ﷺ ' said "Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? (Is it fair that) Allah has trusted all the people of the earth to me while, you do not trust me?" Somebody who, I think was Khalid bin Al-Walid, requested the Prophet ﷺ to let him chop that man's head off, but he prevented him. When the man left, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Among the off-spring of this man will be some who will recite the Qur'an but the Qur'an will not reach beyond their throats (i.e. they will recite like parrots and will not understand it nor act on it), and they will renegade from the religion as an arrow goes through the game's body. They will kill the Muslims but will not disturb the idolaters. If I should live up to their time' I will kill them as the people of 'Ad were killed (i.e. I will kill all of them)."

ʿAli bin Abi Talib sent a piece of gold not yet taken out of its ore, in a tanned leather container to Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed that amongst four Persons: 'Uyaina bin Badr, Aqra bin HʿAbis, Zaid Al-Khail and the fourth was either Alqama or Amir bin at-Tufail. On that, one of his companions said, "We are more deserving of this (gold) than these (persons)." When that news reached the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "Don't you trust me though I am the truth worthy man of the One in the Heavens, and I receive the news of Heaven (i.e. Divine Inspiration) both in the morning and in the evening?" There got up a man with sunken eyes, raised cheek bones, raised forehead, a thick beard, a shaven head and a waist sheet that was tucked up and he said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Be afraid of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to you! Am I not of all the people of the earth the most entitled to fear Allah?" Then that man went away. Khalid bin Al-Wahd said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I chop his neck off?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, for he may offer prayers." Khalid said, "Numerous are those who offer prayers and say by their tongues (i.e. mouths) what is not in their hearts." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have not been ordered (by Allah) to search the hearts of the people or cut open their bellies." Then the Prophet looked at him (i.e. that man) while the latter was going away and said, "From the offspring of this (man there will come out (people) who will recite the Qur'an continuously and elegantly but it will not exceed their throats. (They will neither understand it nor act upon it). They would go out of the religion (i.e. Islam) as an arrow goes through a game's body." I think he also said, "If I should be present at their time I would kill them as the nations a Thamud were killed."

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ يَقُولُ بَعَثَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ بِذُهَيْبَةٍ فِي أَدِيمٍ مَقْرُوظٍ لَمْ تُحَصَّلْ مِنْ تُرَابِهَا قَالَ فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَةِ نَفَرٍ بَيْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ بَدْرٍ وَأَقْرَعَ بْنِ حَابِسٍ وَزَيْدِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّابِعُ إِمَّا عَلْقَمَةُ وَإِمَّا عَامِرُ بْنُ الطُّفَيْلِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ كُنَّا نَحْنُ أَحَقَّ بِهَذَا مِنْ هَؤُلاَءِ قَالَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَلاَ تَأْمَنُونِي وَأَنَا أَمِينُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ يَأْتِينِي خَبَرُ السَّمَاءِ صَبَاحًا وَمَسَاءً قَالَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ غَائِرُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ مُشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ نَاشِزُ الْجَبْهَةِ كَثُّ اللِّحْيَةِ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ مُشَمَّرُ الإِزَارِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ قَالَ وَيْلَكَ أَوَلَسْتُ أَحَقَّ أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ أَنْ يَتَّقِيَ اللَّهَ قَالَ ثُمَّ وَلَّى الرَّجُلُ قَالَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلاَ أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَهُ قَالَ لاَ لَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ يُصَلِّي فَقَالَ خَالِدٌ وَكَمْ مِنْ مُصَلٍّ يَقُولُ بِلِسَانِهِ مَا لَيْسَ فِي قَلْبِهِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أُومَرْ أَنْ أَنْقُبَ قُلُوبَ النَّاسِ وَلاَ أَشُقَّ بُطُونَهُمْ قَالَ ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ وَهْوَ مُقَفٍّ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمٌ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ رَطْبًا لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ وَأَظُنُّهُ قَالَ لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ ثَمُودَ

When ʿAli was in Yemen, he sent some gold in its ore to the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ distributed it among Al-Aqra' bin HʿAbis Al-Hanzali who belonged to Bani Mujashi, 'Uyaina bin Badr Al-Fazari, 'Alqama bin 'Ulatha Al-ʿAmiri, who belonged to the Bani Kilab tribe and Zaid AI-Khail at-Ta'i who belonged to Bani Nabhan. So the Quraish and the Ansar became angry and said, "He gives to the chiefs of Najd and leaves us!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "I just wanted to attract and unite their hearts (make them firm in Islam)." Then there came a man with sunken eyes, bulging forehead, thick beard, fat raised cheeks, and clean-shaven head, and said, "O Muhammad! Be afraid of Allah! " The Prophet ﷺ said, "Who would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? (Allah). He trusts me over the people of the earth, but you do not trust me?" A man from the people (present then), who, I think, was Khalid bin Al- Walid, asked for permission to kill him, but the Prophet ﷺ prevented him. When the man went away, the Prophet said, "Out of the offspring of this man, there will be people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their throats, and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out through the game, and they will kill the Muslims and leave the idolators. Should I live till they appear, I would kill them as the Killing of the nation of 'Ad."

بُعِثَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِذُهَيْبَةٍ فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَةٍ وَحَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نُعْمٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ بَعَثَ عَلِيٌّ وَهْوَ بِالْيَمَنِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِذُهَيْبَةٍ فِي تُرْبَتِهَا فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ الأَقْرَعِ بْنِ حَابِسٍ الْحَنْظَلِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي مُجَاشِعٍ وَبَيْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ بَدْرٍ الْفَزَارِيِّ وَبَيْنَ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ عُلاَثَةَ الْعَامِرِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي كِلاَبٍ وَبَيْنَ زَيْدِ الْخَيْلِ الطَّائِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي نَبْهَانَ فَتَغَضَّبَتْ قُرَيْشٌ وَالأَنْصَارُ فَقَالُوا يُعْطِيهِ صَنَادِيدَ أَهْلِ نَجْدٍ وَيَدَعُنَا قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَتَأَلَّفُهُمْ فَأَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ غَائِرُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ نَاتِئُ الْجَبِينِ كَثُّ اللِّحْيَةِ مُشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَمَنْ يُطِيعُ اللَّهَ إِذَا عَصَيْتُهُ فَيَأْمَنِّي عَلَى أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ وَلاَ تَأْمَنُونِي فَسَأَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ قَتْلَهُ أُرَاهُ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ فَمَنَعَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا وَلَّى قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنَّ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمًا يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلاَمِ مُرُوقَ السَّهْمِ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ يَقْتُلُونَ أَهْلَ الإِسْلاَمِ وَيَدَعُونَ أَهْلَ الأَوْثَانِ لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ عَادٍ

He (the Holy Prophet) gave to the chiefs of Najd and ignored us. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have done it with a view to conciliating between them. Then there came a person with thick beard, prominent cheeks, deep sunken eyes and protruding forehead and shaven head. He said: Muhammad, fear Allah. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I disobey Allah, who would then obey Him? Have I not been (sent as the) most trustworthy among the people of the world? But you do not repose trust in me." That person then went back. A person among the people then sought permission (from the Holy Prophet) for his murder. According to some, it was Khalid b. Walid who sought the permission. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: From this very person's posterity there would arise people who would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throat; they would kill the followers of Islam and would spare the idol-worshippers. They would glance through the teachings of Islam so hurriedly just as the arrow passes through the pray. If I were to ever find them I would kill them like 'Ad.

بَعَثَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ وَهُوَ بِالْيَمَنِ بِذَهَبَةٍ فِي تُرْبَتِهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَسَمَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَةِ نَفَرٍ الأَقْرَعُ بْنُ حَابِسٍ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ وَعُيَيْنَةُ بْنُ بَدْرٍ الْفَزَارِيُّ وَعَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ عُلاَثَةَ الْعَامِرِيُّ ثُمَّ أَحَدُ بَنِي كِلاَبٍ وَزَيْدُ الْخَيْرِ الطَّائِيُّ ثُمَّ أَحَدُ بَنِي نَبْهَانَ قَالَ فَغَضِبَتْ قُرَيْشٌ فَقَالُوا أَتُعْطِي صَنَادِيدَ نَجْدٍ وَتَدَعُنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ لأَتَأَلَّفَهُمْ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ كَثُّ اللِّحْيَةِ مُشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ غَائِرُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ نَاتِئُ الْجَبِينِ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ فَقَالَ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُ أَيَأْمَنُنِي عَلَى أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ وَلاَ تَأْمَنُونِي قَالَ ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فِي قَتْلِهِ يُرَوْنَ أَنَّهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمًا يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَقْتُلُونَ أَهْلَ الإِسْلاَمِ وَيَدَعُونَ أَهْلَ الأَوْثَانِ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلاَمِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ عَادٍ

'Ali b. Abu Talib sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Yemen some gold alloyed with clay in a leather bag dyed in the leaves of Mimosa flava. He distributed it among four men. 'Uyaina b. Hisna, Aqra' b. Habis and Zaid al-Khail, and the fourth one was either Alqama b. 'Ulatha or 'Amir b. Tufail. A person from among his (Prophet's) Companions said: We had a better claim to this (wealth) than these (persons). This (remark) reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon which he said: Will you not trust me, whereas I am a trustee of Him Who is in the heaven? The news come to me from the heaven morning and evening. Then there stood up a person with deep sunken eyes, prominent cheek bones, and elevated forehead, thick beard, shaven head, tucked up loincloth, and he said: Messenger of Allah, fear Allah. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Woe to thee. Do I not deserve most to fear Allah amongst the people of the earth? That man then returned. Khalid b. Walid then said: Messenger of Allah, should I not strike his neck? Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: Perhaps he may be observing the prayer. Khalid said: How many observers of prayer are there who profess with their tongue what is not in their heart? Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have not been commanded to pierce through the hearts of people, nor to split their bellies (insides). He again looked at him and he was going back. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: There would arise a people from the progeny of this (man) who would recite the Qur'an glibly, but it would not go beyond their throats; they would (hurriedly) pass through (the teachings of their) religion just as the arrow passes through the prey. I conceive that he (the Holy Prophet) also said this: If I find them I would certainly kill them as were killed the (people of) Thamud.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ يَقُولُ بَعَثَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ بِذَهَبَةٍ فِي أَدِيمٍ مَقْرُوظٍ لَمْ تُحَصَّلْ مِنْ تُرَابِهَا قَالَ فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَةِ نَفَرٍ بَيْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ حِصْنٍ وَالأَقْرَعِ بْنِ حَابِسٍ وَزَيْدِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّابِعُ إِمَّا عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ عُلاَثَةَ وَإِمَّا عَامِرُ بْنُ الطُّفَيْلِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ كُنَّا نَحْنُ أَحَقَّ بِهَذَا مِنْ هَؤُلاَءِ قَالَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَلاَ تَأْمَنُونِي وَأَنَا أَمِينُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ يَأْتِينِي خَبَرُ السَّمَاءِ صَبَاحًا وَمَسَاءً قَالَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ غَائِرُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ مُشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ نَاشِزُ الْجَبْهَةِ كَثُّ اللِّحْيَةِ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ مُشَمَّرُ الإِزَارِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ فَقَالَ وَيْلَكَ أَوَلَسْتُ أَحَقَّ أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ أَنْ يَتَّقِيَ اللَّهَ قَالَ ثُمَّ وَلَّى الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلاَ أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَهُ فَقَالَ لاَ لَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ يُصَلِّي قَالَ خَالِدٌ وَكَمْ مِنْ مُصَلٍّ يَقُولُ بِلِسَانِهِ مَا لَيْسَ فِي قَلْبِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أُومَرْ أَنْ أَنْقُبَ عَنْ قُلُوبِ النَّاسِ وَلاَ أَشُقَّ بُطُونَهُمْ قَالَ ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ وَهُوَ مُقَفٍّ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمٌ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ رَطْبًا لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ قَالَ أَظُنُّهُ قَالَ لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ ثَمُودَ

‘Ali sent some gold-mixed dust to the prophet (May peace be upon him). He divided it among the four : al-Aqra b. Habis al-Hanzall and then al-Mujashi, uyainah b. Badr al-fazari, zaid al-khail al-Ta’l, next to one of Banu nabhan, and ‘Alqamah b. ‘Ulathat al-Amiri (in general), next to one of Banu kulaib. The Quraish and the ansar became angry and said : He is giving to the chiefs of the people of Najd and leaving us. He said : I am giving them for reconciliation of their hearts. Then a man with deep-seated eyes, high cheek-bones, a projecting brow, a thick beard and a shaven head came forward and said: For Allah, Muhammad! He said : Who will obey Allah if I disobey Him? Allah entrusts me with power over the inhabitants of the earth, but you do not. A man asked to be allowed to kill him and I think he was Khalid b. al-Walid but he prevented him. Then when the man turned away, he said: From this one’s stock there will be people who recite the Quran, but it will not pass down their throats. They will sever from Islam and leave the worshippers of Idols alone; but if I live up to their time I shall certainly kill them as 'Ad were killed.

"When he was in Yemen, Ali sent a piece of gold that was still mixed with sediment to the Messenger of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah distributed it among four people: Al-Aqra' bin Habis Al-Hanzali, 'Uyaynah bin Badr Al-Fazari, 'Alqamah bin 'Ulathah Al- 'Amiri, who was from Banu Kilab and Zaid Al-Ta'I who was from Banu Nabhan. They will kill the Muslims but leave the idol worshippers alone, and they will passes through Islam as an arrow passes through the body of the target. If I live to see them. I will kill them all, as the people of 'Ad were killed."'

"When 'Ali was in Yemen, he sent some gold that was still enclosed in rock to the Prophet [SAW], who distributed it among Al-Aqra' bin Habis Al-Hanzali, who belonged to Banu Mujashi', 'Uyaynah bin Badr Al-Fazari, 'Alqamah bin 'Ulathah Al-'Amiri, who belonged to Banu Kilab and Zaid Al-Khail At-Ta'I, who belonged to Banu Nabhan. The Quraish and the Ansar became angry and said: 'He gives to the chiefs of Najd and ignores us!' He said: 'I am seeking to win them over (firmly to Islam).' Then a man with sunken eyes, a bulging forehead, a thick beard and a shaven head came and said: 'O Muhammad, fear Allah!' He said: 'Who will obey Allah if I do not? He trusts me with the people of this Earth but you do not trust me.' A man among the people asked for permission to kill him, but he did not let him do that. When (the man) went away, he (the Prophet [SAW]) said: 'Among the offspring of this man there will be people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their throats, and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes through the target. They will kill the Muslims and leave the idol-worshippers alone. If I live to see them, I will kill them as the killing of 'Ad.'"

[AI] Ali sent a pouch of gold from Yemen to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that was made of silver coins that had not been obtained from their land. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided it between four people: Zaid Al-Khair, Al-Aqra' bin Habis, 'Uyaynah bin Hisn, and 'Alqamah bin 'Ulathah or 'Amir bin Al-Tufail. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head to him and said, "Woe to you! Shouldn't I be the most deserving of the people of the earth to fear Allah?" Then, the man turned away, and Khalid said, "O Messenger of Allah, should I strike his neck?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Perhaps he is praying." Khalid said, "But he is a hypocrite who utters with his tongue what is not in his heart." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have not been commanded to pierce the hearts of people or slit open their bellies." Then, the Prophet ﷺ looked at him while he was leaving and said, "Indeed, a group will emerge from this man's descendants who recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through religion just as an arrow passes through its target."

بَعَثَ عَلِيٌّ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِذَهَبَةٍ فِي أَدِيمٍ مَقْرُوظٍ لَمْ تُحَصَّلْ مِنْ تُرَابِهَا فَقَسَمَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَةٍ بَيْنَ زَيْدِ الْخَيْرِ وَالْأَقْرَعِ بْنِ حَابِسٍ وَعُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ حِصْنٍ وَعَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ عُلَاثَةَ أَوْ عَامِرِ بْنِ الطُّفَيْلِ شَكَّ عُمَارَةُ فَوَجَدَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِهِ وَالْأَنْصَارُ وَغَيْرُهُمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَلَا تَتَّمِنُونِي وَأَنَا أَمِينُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ يَأْتِينِي خَبَرٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ صَبَاحًا وَمَسَاءً ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ غَائِرُ الْعَيْنَيْنِمُشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ نَاشِزُ الْجَبْهَةِ كَثُّ اللِّحْيَةِ مُشَمَّرُ الْإِزَارِ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ فَقَالَ اتَّقِ اللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ وَيْحَكَ أَلَسْتُ أَحَقَّ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ أَنْ يَتَّقِيَ اللهَ أَنَا؟ ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ فَقَالَ خَالِدٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَلَا أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَهُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَعَلَّهُ يَكُونُ يُصَلِّي فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ رُبَّ مُصَلٍّ يَقُولُ بِلِسَانِهِ مَا لَيْسَ فِي قَلْبِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنِّي لَمْ أُومَرْ أَنْ أُنَقِّبَ عَنْ قُلُوبِ النَّاسِ وَلَا أَشُقَّ بُطُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُقَفٍّ فَقَالَ هَا إِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُجُ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

‘Ali sent some gold-mixed dust to the prophet (May peace be upon him). He divided it among the four : al-Aqra b. Habis al-Hanzall and then al-Mujashi, uyainah b. Badr al-fazari, zaid al-khail al-Ta’l, next to one of Banu nabhan, and ‘Alqamah b. ‘Ulathat al-Amiri (in general), next to one of Banu kulaib. The Quraish and the ansar became angry and said : He is giving to the chiefs of the people of Najd and leaving us. He said : I am giving them for reconciliation of their hearts. Then a man with deep-seated eyes, high cheek-bones, a projecting brow, a thick beard and a shaven head came forward and said: For Allah, Muhammad! He said : Who will obey Allah if I disobey Him? Allah entrusts me with power over the inhabitants of the earth, but you do not. A man asked to be allowed to kill him and I think he was Khalid b. al-Walid but he prevented him. Then when the man turned away, he said: From this one’s stock there will be people who recite the Quran, but it will not pass down their throats. They will sever from Islam and leave the worshippers of Idols alone; but if I live up to their time I shall certainly kill them as 'Ad were killed. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4764)

ذِكْرُ الْخَبَرِ الدَّالِّ عَلَى أَنَّ مَنِ اعْتَرَضَ عَلَى السُّنَنِ بِالتَّأْوِيلَاتِ الْمُضْمَحِلَّةِ، وَلَمْ يَنْقَدْ لِقَبُولِهَا كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبِدَعِ

[AI] Ali sent a gift of gold in Adram to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Yemen. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided it between Zaid al-Khayl, Al-Aqra ibn Habis, Uyainah ibn Hisn, and Al-Qamah ibn Ulathah. Some of the Muhajireen and Ansar said: "We are more deserving of this." The news reached the Prophet ﷺ , and he became angry and said, "Do you not trust me when I am the most trustworthy among those in the heavens? I receive information about those in the heavens in the morning and in the evening." Then, a man with protruding eyes, a wide face, thick beard, shaved head, and loosened waistcloth came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, fear Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Am I not the most righteous among the people of the Earth to fear Allah?" He then turned away. Khalid, the Sword of Allah, approached the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Shall I strike his neck?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "No, perhaps he prays." He ﷺ said, "Many who pray say with their tongues what is not in their hearts." He ﷺ looked at him sternly and said, "He will come out from the offspring of this man, a people who recite the Book of Allah but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through its target." Umamah added, "I thought he ﷺ said, 'If I find them, I will kill them as Thamud was killed.'"

[AI] When the heads of the Azariqah were brought and placed on the steps of Damascus, Abu Umamah came. When he saw them, his eyes filled with tears and he said, "Dogs of Hellfire, dogs of Hellfire! These are the worst killers under the heavens, and the best of those killed under the heavens are those whom they killed." I asked him, "Why are your eyes filled with tears?" He said, "Out of mercy for them, as they were of the people of Islam." I said, "I ask your opinion, did you say dogs of Hellfire or is it something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "If so, then I am bold. Rather, it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not once, not twice, but many times." Then he recited repeatedly, "On the Day when some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black," until he reached, "In which they will abide eternally," and recited, "It is He who has sent down to you the Book, from which are verses that are precise," until he reached, "Those of understanding." Then he took my hand and said, "Indeed, they are many in your land. May Allah protect you from them."

لَمَّا أُتِيَ بِرُءُوسِ الْأَزَارِقَةِ فَنُصِبَتْ عَلَى دَرَجِ دِمَشْقَ جَاءَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ دَمِعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «كِلَابُ النَّارِ كِلَابُ النَّارِ هَؤُلَاءِ شَرُّ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ أَدِيمِ السَّمَاءِ وَخَيْرُ قَتْلَى تَحْتَ أَدِيمِ السَّمَاءِ الَّذِينَ قَتَلَهُمْ هَؤُلَاءِ» قُلْتُ فَمَا شَأْنُكَ دَمِعَتْ عَيْنَاكَ؟ قَالَ «رَحْمَةً لَهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ» قَالَ قُلْتُ أَبِرَأْيِكَ قُلْتَ كِلَابَ النَّارِ أَمْ شَيْئًا سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ «إِنِّي إِذًا لَجَرِيءٌ بَلْ شَيْئًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ غَيْرَ مَرَّةٍ وَلَا ثِنْتَيْنِ وَلَا ثَلَاثٍ» فَعَدَّدَ مِرَارًا ثُمَّ تَلَا {يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ} حَتَّى بَلَغَ {فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ} وَتَلَا {هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ مِنْهُ آيَاتٌ مُحْكَمَاتٌ} حَتَّى بَلَغَ {أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ} ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بِيَدِي فَقَالَ «أَمَا إِنَّهُمْ بِأَرْضِكَ كَثِيرٌ فَأَعَاذَكَ اللهُ مِنْهُمْ»

Then he recited, "And do not be like those who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them," until he reached, "So they will abide in it eternally." So I said, "O Abu Umama, are these the people?" He said, "Yes." I asked him, "Is this something you say according to your own opinion or something you heard from the Messenger of Allah?" He said, "If that is the case, then I am bold enough to say it three times. I heard it from the Messenger of Allah, not once or twice, but seven times." Then he placed his finger in his ears and said, "Otherwise, we would have remained silent."

كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ وَهُوَ عَلَى حِمَارٍ لَهُ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى دَرَجِ دِمَشْقَ فَإِذَا رُءُوسٌ مَنْصُوبَةٌ فَقَالَ مَا هَذِهِ الرُّءُوسُ؟ فَقِيلَ رُءُوسُ الْخَوَارِجِ جِيءَ بِهَا مِنَ الْعِرَاقِ فَقَالَ «كِلَابُ النَّارِ كِلَابُ النَّارِ ثَلَاثًا شَرُّ قَتْلَى قُتِلَتْ تَحْتَ السَّمَاءِ ثَلَاثًا يَقُولُهَا خَيْرُ قَتْلَى مَنْ قَتَلَهُ هَؤُلَاءِ ثَلَاثًا يَقُولُهَا طُوبَى لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ وَقَتَلُوهُ ثَلَاثًا يَقُولُهَا » ثُمَّ بَكَى فَقُلْتُ مَا يُبْكِيكَ يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ؟ قَالَ «رَحْمَةً لَهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ فَخَرَجُوا مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ» ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ مِنْهُ آيَاتٌ مُحْكَمَاتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ} حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنَ الْآيَاتِ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُوا وَاخْتَلَفُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمِ الْبَيِّنَاتُ} حَتَّى بَلَغَ {فَفِي رَحْمَةِ اللهِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ} فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ هَؤُلَاءِ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قُلْتُ شَيْئًا تَقُولُهُ بِرَأْيِكَ أَمْ شَيْئًا سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ «إِنِّي إِذًا لَجَرِيءٌ ثَلَاثًا لَقَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَا مَرَّةً وَلَا اثْنَتَيْنِ حَتَّى عَدَّ سَبْعَةً» ثُمَّ وَضَعَ إِصْبَعَهُ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ فَقَالَ وَإِلَّا فَصَمَتَا

Then he recited, "It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad) the Book (this Qur'an). In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book..." until he reached the verse, "Seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and disbelief in the Oneness of Allah) and seeking it's interpretation..." and indeed they (i.e., the Khawarij) had deviation in their hearts, so he recited, "And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves..." until he reached the verse, "Have you then become disbelievers after having a true faith (Iman)?" I said, "Are these the people you were referring to, O Abu Umamah?" He said, "Yes." I said, "O Abu Umamah, did you say this based on your own opinion or something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "I am bold enough to say it (based on my own opinion), rather, it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not once or twice, but until he repeated it six times."

He said, "I am brave enough to say it three times, but it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , not once or twice, but six times."

He (the Holy Prophet) gave to the chiefs of Najd and ignored us. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have done it with a view to conciliating between them. Then there came a person with thick beard, prominent cheeks, deep sunken eyes and protruding forehead and shaven head. He said: Muhammad, fear Allah. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I disobey Allah, who would then obey Him? Have I not been (sent as the) most trustworthy among the people of the world? But you do not repose trust in me." That person then went back. A person among the people then sought permission (from the Holy Prophet) for his murder. According to some, it was Khalid b. Walid who sought the permission. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: From this very person's posterity there would arise people who would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throat; they would kill the followers of Islam and would spare the idol-worshippers. They would glance through the teachings of Islam so hurriedly just as the arrow passes through the pray. If I were to ever find them I would kill them like 'Ad. (Using translation from Muslim 1064a)

بَعَثَ عَلِيٌّ وَهُوَ بِالْيَمَنِ بِذُهَبَةٍ بِتُرْبَتِهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَسَمَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَةِ نَفَرٍ الْأَقْرَعِ بْنِ حَابِسٍ الْحَنْظَلِيِّ وَعُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ بَدْرٍ الْفَزَارِيِّ وَعَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ عُلَاثَةَ الْعَامِرِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي كِلَابٍ وَزَيْدٍ الطَّائِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي نَبْهَانَ فَغَضِبَتْ قُرَيْشٌ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى صَنَادِيدُ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالُوا يُعْطِي صَنَادِيدَ نَجْدٍ وَيَدَعُنَا قَالَ إِنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ لِأَتَأَلَّفَهُمْ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ كَثُّ اللِّحْيَةِ مُشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ غَائِرُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ نَاتِئُ الْجَبِينِ مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأْسِ فَقَالَ اتَّقِ اللهَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ قَالَ «فَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللهَ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُ أَيَأْمَنُنِي عَلَى أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ وَلَا تَأْمَنُونِي؟» قَالَ ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فِي قَتْلِهِ يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا إِنَّ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمًا يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَقْتُلُونَ أَهْلَ الْإِسْلَامِ وَيَدَعُونَ أَهْلَ الْأَوْثَانِ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لَأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ عَادٍ»

"When 'Ali was in Yemen, he sent some gold that was still enclosed in rock to the Prophet [SAW], who distributed it among Al-Aqra' bin Habis Al-Hanzali, who belonged to Banu Mujashi', 'Uyaynah bin Badr Al-Fazari, 'Alqamah bin 'Ulathah Al-'Amiri, who belonged to Banu Kilab and Zaid Al-Khail At-Ta'I, who belonged to Banu Nabhan. The Quraish and the Ansar became angry and said: 'He gives to the chiefs of Najd and ignores us!' He said: 'I am seeking to win them over (firmly to Islam).' Then a man with sunken eyes, a bulging forehead, a thick beard and a shaven head came and said: 'O Muhammad, fear Allah!' He said: 'Who will obey Allah if I do not? He trusts me with the people of this Earth but you do not trust me.' A man among the people asked for permission to kill him, but he did not let him do that. When (the man) went away, he (the Prophet [SAW]) said: 'Among the offspring of this man there will be people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their throats, and they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes through the target. They will kill the Muslims and leave the idol-worshippers alone. If I live to see them, I will kill them as the killing of 'Ad.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4101)

بَعَثَ عَلِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ بِالْيَمَنِ بِذُهَيْبَةٍ فِي تُرْبَتِهَا فَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ الْأَقْرَعِ بْنِ حَابِسٍ الْحَنْظَلِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي مُجَاشِعٍ وَبَيْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ بَدْرٍ الْفَزَارِيِّ وَبَيْنَ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ عُلَاثَةَ الْعَامِرِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي كِلَابٍ وَبَيْنَ زَيْدِ الْخَيْلِ الطَّائِيِّ ثُمَّ أَحَدِ بَنِي نَبْهَانَ قَالَ فَتغَضَّبَتْ قُرَيْشٌ وَالْأَنْصَارُ قَالُوا تُعْطِي صَنَادِيدَ أَهْلِ نَجْدٍ وَتَدَعُنَا فَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا أَتَأَلَّفُهُمْ» فَأَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ غَائِرَ الْعَيْنَيْنِ نَاتِئَ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ كَثَّ اللِّحْيَةِ مَحْلُوقَ الرَّأْسِ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ اتَّقِ اللهَ قَالَ «مَنْ يُطِعِ اللهَ إِذَا عَصَيْتُهُ أَيَأْمَنُنِي عَلَى أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ وَلَا تَأْمَنُونِي؟» فَسَأَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ قَتْلَهُ فَمَنَعَهُ فَلَمَّا وَلَّى قَالَ «إِنَّ مِنْ ضِئْضِئِ هَذَا قَوْمًا يَخْرُجُونَ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ مُرُوقَ السَّهْمِ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ يَقْتُلُونَ أَهْلَ الْإِسْلَامِ وَيَدَعُونَ أَهْلَ الْأَوْثَانِ لَئِنْ أَنَا أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لَأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ عَادٍ»

He (the Holy Prophet) gave to the chiefs of Najd and ignored us. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have done it with a view to conciliating between them. Then there came a person with thick beard, prominent cheeks, deep sunken eyes and protruding forehead and shaven head. He said: Muhammad, fear Allah. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I disobey Allah, who would then obey Him? Have I not been (sent as the) most trustworthy among the people of the world? But you do not repose trust in me." That person then went back. A person among the people then sought permission (from the Holy Prophet) for his murder. According to some, it was Khalid b. Walid who sought the permission. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: From this very person's posterity there would arise people who would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throat; they would kill the followers of Islam and would spare the idol-worshippers. They would glance through the teachings of Islam so hurriedly just as the arrow passes through the pray. If I were to ever find them I would kill them like 'Ad. (Using translation from Muslim 1064a)

‘Ali sent some gold-mixed dust to the prophet (May peace be upon him). He divided it among the four : al-Aqra b. Habis al-Hanzall and then al-Mujashi, uyainah b. Badr al-fazari, zaid al-khail al-Ta’l, next to one of Banu nabhan, and ‘Alqamah b. ‘Ulathat al-Amiri (in general), next to one of Banu kulaib. The Quraish and the ansar became angry and said : He is giving to the chiefs of the people of Najd and leaving us. He said : I am giving them for reconciliation of their hearts. Then a man with deep-seated eyes, high cheek-bones, a projecting brow, a thick beard and a shaven head came forward and said: For Allah, Muhammad! He said : Who will obey Allah if I disobey Him? Allah entrusts me with power over the inhabitants of the earth, but you do not. A man asked to be allowed to kill him and I think he was Khalid b. al-Walid but he prevented him. Then when the man turned away, he said: From this one’s stock there will be people who recite the Quran, but it will not pass down their throats. They will sever from Islam and leave the worshippers of Idols alone; but if I live up to their time I shall certainly kill them as 'Ad were killed. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4764)

[AI] I was in Sham (Damascus) when Al-Muhallab sent sixty heads of the Khawarij and they were stationed at the steps of Damascus. I was on the back of my house when Abu Umamah passed by, so I got down and followed him. When he stood in front of them, tears welled up in his eyes and he said, "Glory be to Allah! How does Satan influence the sons of Adam three times? The dogs of Hell, the dogs of Hell, the worst of killers under the shade of the sky, three times! The best of those who kill are those who kill them, and blessed are those who kill them or are killed by them." Then he turned to me and said, "O Abu Galib, may Allah protect you from them." I said, "I saw you cried when you saw them." He said, "I cried out of mercy when I saw them. They used to be Muslims. Do you recite Surah Al-Imran?" I said, "Yes." Then he recited, "It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding." (Al-Imran 7) until it reaches, "And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed" (Al-Imran 105) until it reaches, "But as for those who were destined to be prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure" (Al-Imran 107). I said, "Are they the ones you were referring to, O Abu Umamah?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Before you, did you ever say anything or hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "Then I would be wrong (to say so), but I heard him say this, not once or twice, until he counted seven. Then he said, 'The Children of Israel divided into seventy-one sects, and this nation will divide into seventy-two, all of which are in the Fire except one, which is the Jama'ah (main body).' I said, 'O Abu Umamah, don't you see what they are doing?' He said, 'Upon them is what they bear, and upon you is what you bear.'"

"عَنْ أبِي غَالِب قَالَ: كُنْتُ في مَسْجدِ دِمَشْق فَجاءُوا بِسَبْعِينَ مِنْ رُؤوسِ الْحَرُورِيَّة فنصبت عَلَى درج الْمَسْجِد، فَجَاءَ أبُو أُمَامَةَ فَنَظَر إِلَيْهِم فَقَال: كَلَابُ جَهَنَّمَ شَرٌّ قَتْلَى قُتِلُوا تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاءِ، وَمَنْ قَتَلُوا خَير قَتَلَى تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاء وَبَكَى ونَظَرَ إِلَى وَقَالَ: إِنَّكَ مِنْ بَلَدِ هَؤُلاءِ؟ يَا أَبَا غَالِب قُلتُ: نَعَمْ، قال: أَعاذَكَ، قال: أظنه قال: الله منهم، قال: تقرأُ آل عِمْرَانَ، قُلتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: {مِنْهُ آيَاتٌ مُحْكَمَاتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ

وَأُخَرُ مُتَشَابِهَاتٌ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ زَيْغٌ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْفِتْنَةِ وَابْتِغَاءَ تَأْوِيلِهِ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ تَأْوِيلَهُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ}، وَقَالَ: {يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ اسْوَدَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ أَكَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ} قُلتُ: يَا أَبَا أمَامَةَ إِنِّى رَأَيْتُكَ تَهْرِيقُ عُيُونك، قَالَ: رَحْمَةً لَهُم إنَّهم كَانُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الإِسْلَامِ، قَالَ: افْتَرَقَتْ بُنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ وَاحِدَةً وَسَبْعِينَ فِرْقَةً، وَتَزِيدُ هَذِه الأُمَّة فِرْقَةً وَاحِدَة، كُلُّهَا في النَّارِ، إِلَّا السَّوَاد الأعْظَم، عَلَيهِمْ مَا حُمِّلُوا وَعَليكم مَا حُمِّلتُم، وَإِنْ تُطِيعُوه تَهْتَدُوا، السَّمْعُ والطَّاعَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْفُرْقَةِ وَالْمَعصية فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ: يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ، أَمِنْ رَأيِكَ تَقُولُ هَذَا، أَمْ شَيْئًا سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: إِنِّى إِذًا لجرئ إِنِّى سَمِعْتهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ غَيْر مَرَّة وَلَا مَرتيْن وَلَا ثَلاثٍ حَتَّى ذَكَرَ سَبْعًا".

"عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيد قَالَ: بَعَثَ علىٌّ وهُوَ بِالْيَمَنِ: إلَى النَّبىِّ ﷺ بِذهَيْبَة فِى تَربتهَا فَقَسَّمها بَيْنَ زَيْد الْخَيرِ الطَّائِى ثم أحد بنى نبهان وبَيْنَ الأقْرع بن حَابِس الْحَنْظَلِىِّ ثم أحد بنى مجاشع وبَيْنَ عيينة بن بَدْرٍ الْفَزَارِىِّ، وَبَينَ عَلْقَمَة بَن عَلَاثة الْعَامِرِىِّ ثم أحد بنى كلاب فغضبت قُريشٌ وَالأَنْصَارُ، قَالُوا: يُعْطِى صَنَادِيد أَهْل نَجْد وَيَدَعُنَا؟ قَالَ: إنَّما أَتَأَلَّفهم، فَأَقْبَل رَجُلٌ غَائِر الْعَيْنَيْنِ، نَاتِئُ الْجَبِينِ، كَثُّ اللِّحْيَة، مُشرفُ الْوَجَنْتَين، مَحْلُوقٌ، فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّد: اتَّقِ الله، قَالَ: فَمَنْ يطيع الله إِذَا عَصَيْتهُ؟ أَيأمننى عَلَى أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ وَلَا تأمنونى، فَسَأَلَ رَجُلٌ مِن الْقَوْمِ قَتَله النَّبِىُّ ﷺ أرَاه خَالِد بن الْوَلِيد فَمَنَعَهُ، فَلَمَّا ولي قَالَ إنَّ مِن ضئضئ (*) هَذَا قَوْم يَقْرأونَ الْقُرآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُم، يَمْرقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلَامِ مُرُوق السَّهْمِ مِنَ الرَّميَّةِ يَقْتُلُون أَهْلَ الإِسْلَامِ، وَيَدعُونَ أَهْلَ الأوْثَانِ، لئن أَدركتهُم لأقْتُلَنَّهُم قَتْلَ عَاد وَثَمُود".

"عَن ابْنِ جَرِيرٍ قَالَ: بَعَثَ عَلىٌّ إلى رَسُول الله ﷺ بذهَبيَّةٍ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ في أَدَيمٍ مقَرْوظٍ لَمْ تُحَصِّلْ مِنْ تُرابِهَا، قَسَّمَهَا رَسُولُ الله ﷺ بَيْنَ أَرْبَعَة: بَيْنَ زَيْدِ الْخَيل، والأَقْرَع بْنِ حَابِسٍ، وَعُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ حُصْنٍ، وعَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ أَبِى عِلَاثَةَ أَوْ عَامِر بْنِ الطُّفَيْل، فَوَجَدَ في ذَلِكَ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِه وَالأَنْصَار، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : لَا تَأتَمِنُونِى وأَنَا أَمِينُ منْ في السَّمَاءِ؟ يَأتِينِى خَبَرُ مَنْ في السَّماءِ صَبَاحًا وَمَساءً، ثُمَّ أتاهُ رَجُلٌ غَائِرُ العَينين، مَشْرِفُ الْوَجْنَتَيْنِ، نَاتِئُ الْجَبْهةِ، كَثُّ اللِّحيةِ، مشمر الإِزَارِ، مَحْلُوقُ الرَّأسِ،

فَقَالَ لَهُ: اتَّقِ الله -تَعَالَى- يَا رَسُولَ الله، فَقَالَ: وَيْحَكَ أَلْست أَحَقَّ أَهْلِ الأَرْضِ أَنْ أَتَّقى الله؟ ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ، فَقَالَ خَالِدُ بنُ الْوَلِيدِ: أَلا أضْرِبُ عُنُقَهُ يَا رَسُول الله؟ فَقَال رَسُولُ الله ﷺ إِنَّهُ لَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ يُصَلِّى فَقَالَ خَالدٌ: إِنَّهُ رُبَّ مُصَلٍّ فَيَقُولُ بِلِسَانِهِ مَا لَيْسَ في قَلْبِهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : إِنِّى لَمْ أُؤْمَرْ أَنْ أُنَقِّب عَنْ أُمُورِ النَّاسِ وَلَا أَشق بُطُونَهُمْ، ثُمَّ نَظَر إِلَيْه رَسُولُ الله ﷺ وَهُو مُقَفٍّ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُج مِنْ ضِئْضء هَذَا قَوْمٌ يَقْرَأُونَ الْقُرآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرقُونَ منَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِن الرَّميَّةِ".
