[AI] Seventy heads of the Azarah came and camped on the steps of Damascus for seven days. Three of the seven days had passed and it was the fourth day when Abu Umamah came and performed two units of prayer at Sariyah. He said, "The dogs of Hellfire will kill three times worse than those who were killed under the shade of the sky. The best of those who were killed are those who were killed under the shade of the sky." So I said, "O Abu Umamah, is this something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or is it something you say on your own?" He said, "In that case, I am bold. Rather, I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not once, not twice, but until it reached seven times."

[AI] We were told by Sayyar, who said: "Bring me heads from Iraq." So they were brought and placed at the entrance of the mosque. Then Abu Umamah came and entered the mosque, performing two units of prayer, then he came out and looked at them. He raised his head and said, "The worst of those killed under the sky are three, and the best of those killed under the sky are those who are killed." He said, "The dogs of Hellfire, three times." Then he wept and turned away from them. Someone said to him, "O Abu Umamah, what do you think of this statement? Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , or is it something you say based on your own opinion?" He said, "Glory be to Allah! If I had heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once or twice, even if he had mentioned it seven times, I would never forget it." The man asked him, "For what reason did you weep?" He replied, "Out of mercy for them or from His mercy."

[AI] I heard Abu Ghaleb say when the heads of the Azariqah (a tribe) were brought and placed on the steps of Damascus, Abu Amama came and when he saw them, his eyes shed tears. He said, "They are the dogs of Hellfire, the worst of killers who were killed beneath the heavens. And the best of killers are those who were killed beneath the heavens by those they killed." I asked him, "Why are your eyes shedding tears?" He replied, "Out of mercy for them, as they were from the people of Islam." I said, "Do you say this out of your own opinion or did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "I am daring and I indeed heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , not once, twice, or three times, but repeatedly."

[AI] When the heads of the Azariqah were brought and placed on the steps of Damascus, Abu Umamah came. When he saw them, his eyes filled with tears and he said, "Dogs of Hellfire, dogs of Hellfire! These are the worst killers under the heavens, and the best of those killed under the heavens are those whom they killed." I asked him, "Why are your eyes filled with tears?" He said, "Out of mercy for them, as they were of the people of Islam." I said, "I ask your opinion, did you say dogs of Hellfire or is it something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "If so, then I am bold. Rather, it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not once, not twice, but many times." Then he recited repeatedly, "On the Day when some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black," until he reached, "In which they will abide eternally," and recited, "It is He who has sent down to you the Book, from which are verses that are precise," until he reached, "Those of understanding." Then he took my hand and said, "Indeed, they are many in your land. May Allah protect you from them."

[AI] I saw Abu Umamah al-Bahili looking at the heads of Kharijites on the steps of Damascus. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The dogs of the Hell-fire are the dogs of the Hell-fire.'" Then he wept and said, "The worst of those who are killed under the sky are the one who are killed in the cause of Allah, and the best of those who are killed in the cause of Allah are those who are killed in the cause of Allah." Abu Ghālib said, "So I said to him, 'Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?' He said, 'If I heard it, then I deserve to have heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , not once, not twice, and not three times.'"
