[Machine] The messenger of Allah established a raid, so I approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to grant me martyrdom." He said, "O Allah, keep them safe and make them wealthy." So we went on the raid, and we returned safe and successful. Then he established another raid, and I approached him again and said the same thing. He replied, "O Allah, keep them safe and make them wealthy." So we went on the raid, and we returned safe and successful. Then he established another raid, and I approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you for the third time. I ask you to pray to Allah for martyrdom." He said, "O Allah, keep them safe and make them wealthy." So we went on the raid, and we returned safe and successful. Then I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, give me a command that Allah may benefit me with." He said, "You should observe fasting, for there is nothing like it." Abu Umamah used to rarely see smoke in his house during the day. But when smoke was seen during the day, they knew that a guest had arrived and Abu Umamah and his family were observing fasting. He said, "So I went to the Prophet and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you commanded me with something that I hope Allah has benefited me with. Give me another command.' He said, 'Know that whenever you prostrate to Allah, He elevates you in rank and removes a sin from you.'"  

أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوًا فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ قَالَ اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ غَزْوًا آخَرَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ قَالَ اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ غَزْوًا آخَرَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَتَيْتُكَ تَتْرَى ثَلَاثًا أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْتَدْعُوَ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقُلْتَ اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا فَمُرْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِأَمْرٍ يَنْفَعُنِي اللهُ بِهِ قَالَ عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّوْمِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا مِثْلَ لَهُ قَالَ وَكَانَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ لَا يَكَادُ يُرَى فِي بَيْتِهِ الدُّخَانُ بِالنَّهَارِ فَإِذَا رُئِيَ الدُّخَانُ بِالنَّهَارِ عَرَفُوا أَنَّ ضَيْفًا اعْتَرَاهُمْ مِمَّا كَانَ يَصُومُ هُوَ وَأَهْلُهُ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّكَ أَمَرْتَنِي بِأَمْرٍ أَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونَ اللهُ قَدْ نَفَعَنِي بِهِ فَمُرْنِي بِأَمْرٍ آخَرَ قَالَ اعْلَمْ أَنَّكَ لَا تَسْجُدُ لِلَّهِ سَجْدَةً إِلَّا رَفَعَكَ اللهُ بِهَا دَرَجَةً وَحَطَّ عَنْكَ بِهَا خَطِيئَةً  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ formed an army, and I approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for martyrdom for me." He said, "O Allah, protect them and give them booty." So, we set out for battle and achieved victory and collected goods until he mentioned that three times. Then, I approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have approached you three times, asking you to pray for martyrdom for me." He said, "O Allah, protect them and give them booty." We achieved victory and collected goods, O Messenger of Allah. Guide me towards an action that will lead me to Paradise." He said, "Fasting is the best action, as there is no equivalent to it." Abu Umamah was not seen with smoke in his house during the day, unless they had guests. When they saw smoke during the day, they knew that they had guests.  

أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَيْشًا فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ادْعُ اللَّهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا حَتَّى ذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أَتَيْتُكَ تَتْرَى ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَدْعُوَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقُلْتَ «اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمُرْنِي بِعَمَلٍ أَدْخُلُ بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَالَ «عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّوْمِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا مِثْلَ لَهُ» قَالَ فَكَانَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ لَا يُرَى فِي بَيْتِهِ الدُّخَانُ نَهَارًا إِلَّا إِذَا نَزَلَ بِهِمْ ضَيْفٌ فَإِذَا رَأَوَا الدُّخَانَ نَهَارًا عَرَفُوا أَنَّهُ قَدِ اعْتَرَاهُمْ ضَيْفٌ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated a military expedition, so I approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for me to be granted martyrdom." He replied, "O Allah, protect them and grant them spoils." So we went for the expedition, and we were safe and obtained spoils. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated another military expedition, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for me to be granted martyrdom." He replied, "O Allah, protect them and grant them spoils." So we went for the expedition, and we were safe and obtained spoils. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated a third military expedition, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you twice requesting you to supplicate to Allah for me to be granted martyrdom." He said, "O Allah, protect them and grant them spoils." So we went for the expedition, and we were safe and obtained spoils.  

أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوَةً فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوًا آخَرَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوًا ثَالِثًا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أَتَيْتُكَ مَرَّتَيْنِ تَدْعُو لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقُلْتَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated a battle and I came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for me to be a martyr." Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated another battle and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for me to be a martyr." He said, "O Allah, grant them safety and make them prosperous." So, we fought and we were safe and prosperous. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated a third battle and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you twice asking for martyrdom." He said, "O Allah, grant them safety and make them prosperous." So, we fought and we were safe and prosperous.  

أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوَةً فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوًا آخَرَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوًا ثَالِثًا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أَتَيْتُكَ مَرَّتَيْنِ تَدْعُو لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقُلْتَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا

He said, "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them booty." So we fought, and we emerged safe and gained spoils.  

أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوَةً فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوًا آخَرَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوًا ثَالِثًا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أَتَيْتُكَ مَرَّتَيْنِ تَدْعُو لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَقُلْتَ «اللهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ» فَغَزَوْنَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا  

"عَنْ أبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ: أنْشَأَ رسُولُ الله ﷺ غَزوًا فَأَتَيْتُه فَقُلتُ: يَا رَسُولَ الله ادعُ الله لِى بِالشَّهَادَةِ، فَقَالَ: اللَّهمَّ سَلِّمهُمْ، وَفِى لفْظ: ثبِّتْهُم وَغنِّمْهُمْ، فَغَزَونَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا، ثُمَّ أَنَشَأَ رسولُ الله ﷺ غَزْوًا ثَانِيًا فَقُلتُ: يَا رَسُولَ الله ادع الله لِى بِالشَّهَادَةِ، قَالَ: اللَّهُمَ سَلِّمْهُمْ، وَفِى لَفْظ ثبِّتْهُم وَغَنِّمْهم، فَغَزْونَا فَسلمنَا وَغنمنا، ثَّم أَنْشَأ رسُولُ الله ﷺ غَزْوَا ثَالِثًا فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلتُ: يا رسُولَ الله قَدْ أَتَيْتُكَ مَرَّتينِ أسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَدْعُوَ

الله لي بِالشَّهَادَةِ، فَقُلتَ: اللَّهمِّ سَلِّمْهم وغنِّمْهم يَا رَسُولَ الله فَادْعُ الله لِى بالشَّهَادَةِ، فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْهم وغنِّمْهُم، فَغَزْونَا فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا، ثُمَّ أتَيتُهُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَقُلتُ: يَا رَسُولَ الله مُرْنِى بِعَمَلٍ آخُذُه عَنْكَ فَيَنفعنى الله بِهِ، فَقَالَ؛ عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّومِ فِإنَّه لَا مِثلَ لَهُ، ثُمَّ أَتَيتُهُ بَعْد ذَلِكَ فَقُلتُ: يَا رَسولَ الله: إنَّكَ أمَرْتَنِى بِأَمْرٍ أرجو أَنْ يكونَ الله نَفَعَنى بِه، قَالَ: اعْلَمْ أنَّكَ لا تَسْجُدُ لله سَجْدَةً إلَّا رَفَعَ الله لكَ بِهَا دَرَجةً وَحَطَّ، وَفِى لَفْظ وَحَطَّ عَنْكَ بِهَا خِطيئَة".
