Rafi' b. Khadij came to us and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbids you from a work which is beneficial to you ; and obedience to Allah and His Prophet ﷺ is more beneficial to you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbids you from renting land for share of its produce and he said: If anyone if not in need of his land he should lend it to his brother or leave it. Abu Dawud said: Shu'bah and Mufaddal b. Muhalhal have narrated it from Mansur in similar way. Shu'bah said (in his version): Usaid, nephew of Rafi' b, Khadij.

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَكُمْ نَافِعًا وَطَاعَةُ اللَّهِ وَطَاعَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْفَعُ لَكُمْ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ الْحَقْلِ وَقَالَ مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى عَنْ أَرْضِهِ فَلْيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ أَوْ لِيَدَعْ

"Rafi' bin Khadij said: 'The Messenger of Allah has forbidden something for you that used to be beneficial for us, but obedience to the Messenger of Allah is more beneficial for us. He said: "Whoever has land let him cultivate it, and if he is unable to do so, let him give it to his brother to cultivate."'"

رَافِعُ بْنُ خَدِيجٍ نَهَاكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا وَطَاعَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْفَعُ لَنَا قَالَ مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا فَإِنْ عَجَزَ عَنْهَا فَلْيُزْرِعْهَا أَخَاهُ خَالَفَهُ عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ بْنُ مَالِكٍ

"The Messenger of Allah came out to us and forbade something for us that had been beneficial for us. He said: 'Whoever has land, let him cultivate it or give it to someone else (to cultivate), or leave it.'"

خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَنَهَانَا عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا فَقَالَ مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا أَوْ يَمْنَحْهَا أَوْ يَذَرْهَا

"The Messenger of Allah came out to us and forbade something for us that had been beneficial for us, but the command of Messenger of Allah is better for us. He said: 'Whoever has land, let him cultivate it or leave it or give it (to someone else to cultivate).'"

خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَنَهَانَا عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا وَأَمْرُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَيْرٌ لَنَا قَالَ مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا أَوْ لِيَذَرْهَا أَوْ لِيَمْنَحْهَا وَمِمَّا يَدُلُّ عَلَى أَنَّ طَاوُسًا لَمْ يَسْمَعْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ

“If one of us did not need his land, he would give it (to someone else to cultivate) in return for one third, or one half of the yield , and he would stipulate (that the should receive) the produce grows on the banks of three streams, and the grains that remain in the ear after threshing, and the produce irrigated by a stream. Life at that time was hard, and he would work (the land) with iron and whatever Allah (SWT) willed, and he would benefit from it. Then Rafi bin Khadij came to us and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade you to do something that may seem beneficial to you, but obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger are more beneficial for you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade Haq for you, and he said: “Whoever has no need of his land, let him give it to his brother (to cultivate) or let him leave it (uncultivated).”

قَالَقَالَ رَافِعُ بْنُ خَدِيجٍ نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا وَطَاعَةُ اللهِ وَطَاعَةُ رَسُولِهِ أَنْفَعُ لَنَا قَالَ مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا فَإِنْ عَجَزَ عَنْهَا فَلْيُزْرِعْهَا أَخَاهُ

"Rafi' bin Khadij came to us and said: 'The Messenger of Allah has forbidden something that was beneficial for us, but obedience to the Messenger of Allah is better for you. He has forbidden Al-Haql (renting land in return for one-third or one-quarter of the produce) to you, and says: Whoever has land, let him give it (to someone else to cultivate it) or leave it. And he has forbidden Al-Muzabanah. Al-Muzabanah means when a man has a lot of date-palm trees and another man comes and takes it in return for a certain number of Wasqs of dried dates.'" إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَكُمْ نَافِعًا وَطَاعَةُ اللهِ وَطَاعَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْفَعُ لَكُمْ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ يَنْهَاكُمْعَنِ الْحَقْلِ وَيَقُولُ مَنْ اسْتَغْنَى عَنْ أَرْضِهِ فَلْيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ أَوْ لِيَدَعْ وَيَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ الْمُزَابَنَةِ وَالْمُزَابَنَةُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الرَّجُلُ لَهُ الْمَالُ الْعَظِيمُ مِنَ النَّخْلِ فَيَأْتِيهِ الرَّجُلُ فَيَقُولُ قَدْ أَخَذْتُهُ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا وَسْقًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ

[AI] "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited you from a matter that would have benefited you, regarding the field and a third and a quarter. So whoever has land and can fulfill his needs without it, then let him give it to his brother or let him cultivate it. And he prohibited you from usury."

» إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ يَنْفَعُكُمْ عَنِ الْحَقْلِ وَالْحَقْلُ الثُّلُثُ وَالرُّبُعُ فَمَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَاسْتَغْنَى عَنْهَا فَلْيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ أَوْ لِيَزْرَعْ وَنَهَاكُمْ عَنِ الْمُزَابَنَةِ «

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ prohibited us from doing something that would benefit us, and he also prohibited us from using the earth for some of its produce and using dried leaves. He also prohibited us from earning as a cupper (a person who practices cupping therapy).

«نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا وَأَمْرُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الرَّأْسِ وَالْعَيْنِ نَهَانَا أَنْ نَعْمَلَ الْأَرْضَ بِبَعْضِ خَرَاجِهَا وبِوَرِقٍ مَنْقُودَةٍ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ كَسْبِ الْحَجَّامِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from a matter that was beneficial to us, and he ﷺ forbade us from scratching our heads and eyes with some of what comes out of it and with a discarded leaf. He said, "Whoever has land, let him cultivate it or give it to his brother."

نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا وَأَمْرُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الرَّأْسِ وَالْعَيْنَيْنِ نَهَانَا أَنْ نُكْرِيَ أَرْضَنَا بِبَعْضِ مَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْهَا وبِوَرِقٍ مَنْقُودَةٍ وَقَالَ «مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا أَوْ لِيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from a matter that was of benefit for us. When one of us had some land and we would let someone use it for a portion of its produce or some Dirham. He said: 'When one of you has some land then let him grant it to his brother, or let him farm it.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1384)

نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا نَهَانَا إِذَا كَانَ لِأَحَدِنَا أَرْضٌ أَنْ يُعْطِيَهَا بِبَعْضِ خَرْجِهَا بِثُلُثٍ أَوْ بِنِصْفٍ وَقَالَ «مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا أَوْ لِيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah came to us and forbade us from an action that was beneficial to us, while the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better. He said, "Whoever has land should cultivate it, bestow it, or leave it as it is." This was mentioned to Tawus, and he said, "Indeed, Ibn Abbas knew better." Ibn Abbas said, "For a man to bestow his land upon his brother is better for him."

خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ فَنَهَانَا عَنْ أَمْرٍ كَانَ لَنَا نَافِعًا وَأَمْرُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرٌ قَالَ «مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا أَوْ لِيَمْنَحْهَا أَوْ لِيَذَرْهَا» فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لِطَاوُسٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ كَانَ أَعْلَمَ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ «لِأَنْ يَمْنَحَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ أَرْضَهُ خَيْرٌ لَهُ»
