[Machine] Abu Jabirah ibn al-Dhahak said: "This verse was revealed among us, meaning the Banu Salamah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, and not a single one of us had only one name. Each one of us had two or three names. So when a man was called by his name, we would say, 'O Messenger of Allah, he dislikes this.' So the verse {And do not insult one another by [offensive] nicknames} was revealed."

[Machine] In Bani Salimah, the verse "Do not insult one another by using offensive nicknames" [Al-Hujurat 11] was revealed. It is said that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, every man among them had two or three names. So, whenever he called someone by one of those names, they would say, "O Messenger of Allah, he dislikes being called by this name." He ﷺ said, "The verse 'Do not insult one another by using offensive nicknames' was then revealed."

It was said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and there was not a single person among us who did not have two or three names.' It was said, 'A man would be called and they would say, 'Muh, muh, muh,' indicating that he gets angry at this nickname.' So the verse was revealed: 'And do not insult one another with nicknames' (Quran, Al-Hujurat 11). 'The chain of narration is authentic and they did not exclude it' (Sahih)."
