“I heard my paternal uncle Yahya – and I have not seen a man among us like him – tell the people that Sa'd bin Zurarah, who was the grandfather of Muhammad through his mother, was suffering from pain in his throat, known as croup. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘I shall do my best for Abu Umamah.’ Such that I will be excused (i.e., free of blame if he is not healed). And he cauterized him with his own hand, but he died. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘May the Jews be doomed! They will say: “Why could he not avert death from his Companions?” But I have no power to do anything for him or for my own self.’”

[AI] I heard Umar and I have not seen anyone among us who is similar, saying that Saad ibn Zurarah had an illness and the people of Medina called it "dhabh" (slaughter). So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cauterized him and he died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May the Jews say about the deceased, 'If it was not for the intervention of his companion (referring to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ) and I had no control or possession over him, nor anything for myself.'"

[AI] Abu Umamah fell ill with a pain called "the slaughter" by the people of Madinah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I will either receive a test or present an excuse for Abu Umamah." He then wiped his hand over him and he passed away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A bad fate for the Jews who say that when affliction befalls a person, it is lifted from him and I have no power over him or over myself in anything from Allah."

[AI] "That As'ad ibn Zurara, the grandfather of Muhammad, had a soreness in his throat called 'ad-Dhubhah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I will either give him an excuse or I will publicly expose him in the case of Abu Umamah." So he cured him with his hand, but then he died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What a bad person he is to the Jews. They say, 'Shouldn't he have paid for his friend and whatever I possess for him and for myself from Allah?'"
