8. Book of Virtues (5/10)
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed witr at the beginning (of the night) and at the end, and in the middle. And toward the end of his life, he settled on performing witr at the end of the night."
he asked Aishah about the Witr of the Prophet. She said: "He would perform Witr during all of the night; (either) its beginning, its middle, or its end. So when he died, his Witr ended, during the approachof As-Sahar."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Make witr as your last prayer at night."
Observe Witr prayer before it is morning. Abu Sa'id reported that they (the Prophet's Companions) asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about Witr (prayer). (In reply to their inquiry) he said: Observe Witr prayer before it is morning.
'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer prayer at night while she lay in front of him, and when the Witr prayer was yet to be observed, he would awaken her and she observed Witr.
If anyone is afraid that he may not get up in the latter part of the night, he should observe Witr in the first part of it; and if anyone is eager to get up in the last part of it, he should observe Witr at the end of the night, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed (by the angels) and that is preferable.
8.26 Merit of the (Optional) Duha (Forenoon) Prayer
three fasts during every month, two rak'ahs of the forenoon prayer, and observing Witr prayer before going to bed.
In the morning charity is due from every bone in the body of every one of you. Every utterance of Allah's glorification is an act of charity. Every utterance of praise of Him is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Oneness is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Greatness is an act of charity, enjoining good is an act of charity, forbidding what is distreputable is an act of charity, and two rak'ahs which one prays in the forenoon will suffice.
that he asked 'A'isha ؓ how many rak'ahs Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed at the forenoon prayer. She replied: Four rak'ahs, but sometimes more as he pleased.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe four rak'ahs in the forenoon prayer and he sometimes observed more as Allah pleased.
8.27 Time for the Duha (Forenoon Optional) Prayer
They well know that prayer at another time than this is more excellent, for Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The prayer of those who are penitent is observed when your weaned camels feel the heat of the sun.
8.28 Inducement to Perform Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid (Upon Entering the Mosque)
The Prophet ﷺ said, "If anyone of you enters a Mosque, he should not sit until he has offered a tworakʿ at prayer."
8.29 The Excellence of Performing two Rak'ah of Voluntary Prayer after Ablution
At the time of the Fajr prayer the Prophet ﷺ asked Bilal, "Tell me of the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise." Bilal replied, "I did not do anything worth mentioning except that whenever I performed ablution during the day or night, I prayed after that ablution as much as was written for me."
8.30 Virtue of Jumuah (Friday) Prayer
and its obligation, and the necessity of performing ablution for it, and wearing nice clothes and hastening towards it, and making supplications on Friday, and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and in it is an explanation of the hour of acceptance and the recommendation to increase the remembrance of Allah Almighty after Friday.
The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was made to enter Paradise, on it he. was expelled from it.
The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created. on it he was made to enter Paradise, on it he was expelled from it. And the last hour will take place on no day other than Friday.
He who performed ablution well, then came to Friday prayer, listened (to the sermon), kept silence all (his sins) between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven with three days extra, and he who touched pebbles caused an interruption.
The five (daily) prayers and one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer are expiations (for the sins committed in the intervals) between them.
Verily the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadhan to Ramadhan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one shuns the major sins.
People must cease to neglect the Friday prayer or Allah will seal their hearts and then they will be among the negligent.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Anyone of you attending the Friday (prayers) should take a bath."
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Anyone of you coming for the Jumua prayer should take a bath."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male (Muslim) who has attained the age of puberty."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every Muslim who has attained the age of puberty."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Bath on Friday is compulsory for those who have attained the age of puberty."
If any one of you performs ablution (on Friday) that is all right; and if any of you takes a bath, that is better.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Anyone who takes a bath on Friday and cleans himself as much as he can and puts oil (on his hair) or scents himself; and then proceeds for the prayer and does not force his way between two persons (assembled in the mosque for the Friday prayer), and prays as much as is written for him and remains quiet when the Imam delivers the Khutba, all his sins in between the present and the last Friday will be forgiven."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour i.e. early), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah's cause); and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ talked about Friday and said, "There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand." And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands.
'Abdullah b. Umar said to me: Did you hear anything from your father narrating something from the messenger of Allah ﷺ about the time on Friday? I said: Yes, I heard him say from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (these words):" It is between the time when the Imam sits down and the end of the prayer."
8.31 The Desirability of Prostrating out of Gratitude
We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Mecca making for Medina. When we were near Azwara', he alighted, then raised his hands, and made supplication to Allah for a time, after which he prostrated himself, remaining a long time in prostration. Then he stood up and raised his hands for a time, after which he prostrated himself, remaining a long time in prostration. He then stood up and raised his hands for a time, after which he prostrated himself. Ahmad mentioned it three times. He then said: I begged my Lord and made intercession for my people, and He gave me a third of my people, so I prostrated myself in gratitude to my Lord. Then I raised my head and begged my Lord for my people, and He gave me a third of my people, so I prostrated myself in gratitude to my Lord. Then I raised my head and begged my Lord for my people and He gave me the remaining third, so I prostrated myself in gratitude to my Lord. Abu Dawud said: When Ahmad b. Salih narrated this tradition to us, he omitted the name of Ash'ath b. Ishaq, but Musa b. Sahl al-Ramli narrated it to us through him.
8.32 Virtue of Doing Qiyam al-Layl (Standing in Prayer at Night)
The Prophet ﷺ used to offer night prayers till his feet became swollen. Somebody said, to him," "Allah has forgiven you, your faults of the past and those to follow." On that, he said, "Shouldn't I be a thankful slave of Allah)?"
The Prophet ﷺ used to offer prayer at night (for such a long time) that his feet used to crack. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why do you do it since Allah has forgiven you your faults of the past and those to follow?" He said, "Shouldn't I love to be a thankful slave (of Allah)?' When he became old, he prayed while sitting, but if he wanted to perform a bowing, he would get up, recite (some other verses) and then perform the bowing.
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Do not be like so-and-so, who used to pray voluntary night prayers then stopped praying voluntary night prayers.”
'Abdullah, don't be like so and so who observed prayer during the whole night and then abandoned it (altogether).
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'O Abdullah do not be like so-and-so; he used to pray Qiyam Al-Lail and then he stopped.'"
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Do not be like so-and-so; he used to pray Qiyam Al-Lail then he stopped.'"
It was mentioned before the Prophet ﷺ that there was a man who slept the night till morning (after sunrise). The Prophet ﷺ said, "He is a man in whose ears (or ear) Satan had urinated."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Satan puts three knots at the back of the head of any of you if he is asleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following words, 'The night is long, so stay asleep.' When one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone; and when one performs ablution, the second knot is undone, and when one prays the third knot is undone and one gets up energetic with a good heart in the morning; otherwise one gets up lazy and with a mischievous heart."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "During your sleep, Satan knots three knots at the back of the head of each of you, and he breathes the following words at each knot, 'The night is, long, so keep on sleeping,' If that person wakes up and celebrates the praises of Allah, then one knot is undone, and when he performs ablution the second knot is undone, and when he prays, all the knots are undone, and he gets up in the morning lively and in good spirits, otherwise he gets up in low spirits and lethargic."

Best fast after Ramadan is Muharram and the best prayer after the fard is the night prayer
The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's month. al-Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is prayer during the night.
A man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! How is the prayer of the night?" He said, "Two rakʿat followed by two rakʿat and so on, and when you apprehend the approaching dawn, offer one rakʿa as witr."
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray (voluntary prayers) at night two by two, and he would pray one Rak’ah of Witr.”
Sometimes Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not fast (for so many days) that we thought that he would not fast that month and he sometimes used to fast (for so many days) that we thought he would not leave fasting throughout that month and (as regards his prayer and sleep at night), if you wanted to see him praying at night, you could see him praying and if you wanted to see him sleeping, you could see him sleeping.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to leave fasting in a certain month till we thought that he would not fast in that month, and he used to fast in another month till we thought he would not stop fasting at all in that month. And if one wanted to see him praying at night, one could see him (in that condition), and if one wanted to see him sleeping at night, one could see him (in that condition) too.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray eleven rakʿat at night and that was his night prayer and each of his prostrations lasted for a period enough for one of you to recite fifty verses before Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head. He also used to pray two rakʿat (Sunnah) before the (compulsory) Fajr prayer and then lie down on his right side till the Mu'adh-dhin came to him for the prayer.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer eleven rakʿat and that was his prayer. He used to prolong the prostration to such an extent that one could recite fifty verses (of the Qur'an) before he would lift his head. He used to pray two rakʿat (Sunna) before the Fajr prayer and then used to lie down on his right side till the call-maker came and informed him about the prayer.
