(1187) bukhari:35Abū al-Yamān > Shuʿayb > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven."

(١١٨٧) البخاري:٣٥حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ يَقُمْ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

All sins forgiven for the one who sincerely does qiyam of Ramadan

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not for showing off), all his past sins will be forgiven."

(١١٨٧) البخاري:٣٧حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

All sins forgiven for the one who sincerely fasts Ramadan

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying regarding Ramadan, "Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven."

(١١٨٧) البخاري:٢٠٠٨حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لِرَمَضَانَ مَنْ قَامَهُ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever prayed at night the whole month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven." Ibn Shihab (a sub-narrator) said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ died and the people continued observing that (i.e. Nawafil offered individually, not in congregation), and it remained as it was during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr and in the early days of 'Umar's Caliphate."

(١١٨٧) البخاري:٢٠٠٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ فَتُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ كَانَ الأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فِي خِلاَفَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَصَدْرًا مِنْ خِلاَفَةِ عُمَرَ ؓ

(1187) bukhari:2014ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh > Sufyān > Ḥafiẓnāh And ʾInnamā Ḥafiẓ from al-Zuhrī > Abū Salamah > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven ."

(١١٨٧) البخاري:٢٠١٤حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ حَفِظْنَاهُ وَإِنَّمَا حَفِظَ مِنَ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

تَابَعَهُ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ

He who observed prayer at night during Ramadan, because of faith and seeking his reward from Allah, his previous sins would be forgiven.

(١١٨٨) مسلم:٧٥٩aحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

(1188) muslim:759bʿAbd b. Ḥumayd > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > Abū Salamah > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to exhort (his Companions) to pray (at night) during Ramadan without commanding them to observe it as an obligatory act, and say: He who observed the night prayer in Ramadan because of faith and seeking his reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, this was the practice, and it continued thus during Abu Bakr's caliphate and the early part of 'Umar's caliphate.

(١١٨٨) مسلم:٧٥٩bوَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُرَغِّبُ فِي قِيَامِ رَمَضَانَ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَأْمُرَهُمْ فِيهِ بِعَزِيمَةٍ فَيَقُولُ مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ فَتُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ كَانَ الأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فِي خِلاَفَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَصَدْرًا مِنْ خِلاَفَةِ عُمَرَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ

(1188) muslim:760aZuhayr b. Ḥarb > Muʿādh b. Hishām from my father > Yaḥyá b. Abū Kathīr > Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Abū Hurayrah

He who observed the fasts of Ramadan with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven, and he who observed prayer on Lailat-ul- Qadr with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven.

(١١٨٨) مسلم:٧٦٠aوَحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ حَدَّثَهُمْ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ

تَابَعَهُ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ
(1190) bukhari:2015ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

Some men amongst the companions of the Prophet ﷺ were shown in their dreams that the night of Qadr was in the last seven nights of Ramadan. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It seems that all your dreams agree that (the Night of Qadr) is in the last seven nights, and whoever wants to search for it (i.e. the Night of Qadr) should search in the last seven (nights of Ramadan).

(١١٩٠) البخاري:٢٠١٥حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ

أَنَّ رِجَالاً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أُرُوا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْمَنَامِ فِي السَّبْعِ الأَوَاخِرِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرَى رُؤْيَاكُمْ قَدْ تَوَاطَأَتْ فِي السَّبْعِ الأَوَاخِرِ فَمَنْ كَانَ مُتَحَرِّيَهَا فَلْيَتَحَرَّهَا فِي السَّبْعِ الأَوَاخِرِ

(1191) bukhari:2017Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar > Abū Suhayl from his father > ʿĀʾishah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan."

(١١٩١) البخاري:٢٠١٧حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْوِتْرِ مِنَ الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ

(1191) bukhari:2020Muḥammad > ʿAbdah > Hishām b. ʿUrwah from his father > ʿĀʾishah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan."

(١١٩١) البخاري:٢٠٢٠حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدَةُ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَيَقُولُ تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ

(1192) bukhari:2017Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar > Abū Suhayl from his father > ʿĀʾishah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to practice Iʿtikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan."

(١١٩٢) البخاري:٢٠٢٠حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدَةُ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُجَاوِرُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَيَقُولُ تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ

The Prophet ﷺ had heightened devotion during the final ten nights of Ramadan

(1193) muslim:1174Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥanẓalī And Ibn Abū ʿUmar > Ibn ʿUyaynah > Isḥāq > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > Abū Yaʿfūr > Muslim b. Ṣubayḥ > Masrūq > ʿĀʾishah

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that when the last ten nights began Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept awake at night (for prayer and devotion), wakened his family, and prepared himself to observe prayer (with more vigour).

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ أَحْيَا اللَّيْلَ وَأَيْقَظَ أَهْلَهُ وَجَدَّ وَشَدَّ الْمِئْزَرَ

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.

عَائِشَةُ ؓ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَجْتَهِدُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مَا لاَ يَجْتَهِدُ فِي غَيْرِهِ

(1195) tirmidhi:3513Qutaybah b. Saʿīd > Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān al-Ḍubaʿī > Kahmas b. al-Ḥasan > ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah > ʿĀʾishah

“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your view if I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in it?” He said: ‘Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me (Allāhumma innaka ʿAfuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī).’”

(١١٩٥) الترمذي:٣٥١٣حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الضُّبَعِيُّ عَنْ كَهْمَسِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ عَلِمْتُ أَىُّ لَيْلَةٍ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ مَا أَقُولُ فِيهَا قَالَ قُولِي اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

(1196) bukhari:887ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwak for every prayer."

(١١٩٦) البخاري:٨٨٧حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي أَوْ عَلَى النَّاسِ لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ مَعَ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were I not afraid that it would be hard on my followers, I would order them to use the siwak (as obligatory, for cleaning the teeth).

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ

When the Apostle of Allaah (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) got up during the night (to pray), he cleansed his mouth with the tooth-stick.

"Whenever the Messenger of Allah got up for prayer at night to pray Tahajjud (night optional prayer), he would clean his mouth with the tooth stick."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ يَتَهَجَّدُ يَشُوصُ فَاهُ بِالسِّوَاكِ

Whenever he (the Holy Prophet) got up for prayer during the night, he cleansed his mouth with the tooth-stick.

"I said: 'O Mother of the believers! Tell me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She said: 'We used to prepare his siwak and water for purification, then Allah (SWT) would wake him when He willed to wake him at night. He would use the siwak and perform wudu, then pray eith rak'ahs; not sitting until the eighth rak'ah, when he would sit and remember Allah (SWT) and call upon Him. Then he would say the taslim loud enough for us to hear.'"

(١١٩٨) النسائي:١٣١٥أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْبِئِينِي

عَنْ وَتْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَتْ كُنَّا نُعِدُّ لَهُ سِوَاكَهُ وَطُهُورَهُ فَيَبْعَثُهُ اللَّهُ لِمَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَيَتَسَوَّكُ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ وَيُصَلِّي ثَمَانِ رَكَعَاتٍ لاَ يَجْلِسُ فِيهِنَّ إِلاَّ عِنْدَ الثَّامِنَةِ فَيَجْلِسُ فَيَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ ﷻ وَيَدْعُو ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ تَسْلِيمًا يُسْمِعُنَا

(1199) bukhari:888Abū Maʿmar > ʿAbd al-Wārith > Shuʿayb b. al-Ḥabḥāb > Anas

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have told you repeatedly to use the Siwak. (The Prophet ﷺ put emphasis on the use of the Siwak.)

(١١٩٩) البخاري:٨٨٨حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ الْحَبْحَابِ حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسٌ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَكْثَرْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي السِّوَاكِ

(1200) muslim:253aAbū Kurayb Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Ibn Bishr > Misʿar > al-Miqdām b. Shurayḥ from his father

I asked A'isha what Allah's Apostle ﷺ did first when he entered his house, and she replied: He used tooth-stick (first of all).

سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ قُلْتُ بِأَىِّ شَىْءٍ كَانَ يَبْدَأُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ قَالَتْ بِالسِّوَاكِ

(1201) muslim:254Yaḥyá b. Ḥabīb al-Ḥārithī > Ḥammād b. Zayd > Ghaylān / Ibn Jarīr al-Maʿwalī > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

I went to the Apostle ﷺ and found one end of the tooth-stick upon his tongue (i. e. he was rinsing his mouth).

(1202) nasai:5Ḥumayd b. Masʿadah And Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlá > Yazīd Wahū Ibn Zurayʿ > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū ʿAtīq from my father > ʿĀʾishah

"My father told me: 'I heard 'Aishah say, (narrating) from the Prophet ﷺ: "Siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord."

(١٢٠٢) النسائي:٥أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى عَنْ يَزِيدَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ زُرَيْعٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ السِّوَاكُ مَطْهَرَةٌ لِلْفَمِ مَرْضَاةٌ لِلرَّبِّ

Five human urges are from the fiṭrah (natural human instinct or disposition)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Five practices are characteristics of the fiṭrah: (1) circumcision, (2) shaving the pubic region, (3) plucking the arm pits, (4) clipping the nails, and (5) cutting the mustaches."

(١٢٠٣) البخاري:٥٨٨٩حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيٌّ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رِوَايَةً الْفِطْرَةُ: «خَمْسٌ» أَوْ «خَمْسٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ: (١) الْخِتَانُ (٢) وَالاِسْتِحْدَادُ (٣) وَنَتْفُ الإِبْطِ (٤) وَتَقْلِيمُ الأَظْفَارِ (٥) وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ۔»

I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying. "Five practices are characteristics of the Fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, cutting the moustaches short, clipping the nails, and depilating the hair of the armpits."

(١٢٠٣) البخاري:٥٨٩١حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ الْخِتَانُ وَالاِسْتِحْدَادُ وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الأَظْفَارِ وَنَتْفُ الآبَاطِ

(1203) bukhari:6297Yaḥyá b. Quzaʿah > Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd > Ibn Shihāb > Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ said "Five things are in accordance with Al Fitra (i.e. the tradition of prophets): to be circumcised, to shave the pelvic region, to pull out the hair of the armpits, to cut short the moustaches, and to clip the nails.'

(١٢٠٣) البخاري:٦٢٩٧حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ قُزَعَةَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ الْخِتَانُ وَالاِسْتِحْدَادُ وَنَتْفُ الإِبْطِ وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الأَظْفَارِ

Ten human urges are from the fitrah (natural human instinct or disposition)

(1204) muslim:261aQutaybah b. Saʿīd And ʾAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah Wazuhayr b. Ḥarb > Wakīʿ > Zakariyyāʾ b. Abū Zāʾidah > Muṣʿab b. Shaybah > Ṭalq b. Ḥabīb > ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr > ʿĀʾishah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ten are the acts according to fitra: (1) clipping the mustache, (2) letting the beard grow, (3) using the siwāk/miswāk (toothstick), (4) snuffing water in the nose ˹for cleaning˺, (5) cutting the nails, (6) washing the finger joints, (7) plucking the hair under the armpits, (8) shaving the pubic hair, and (9) cleaning one's private parts with water.
The narrator said: I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been (10) rinsing the mouth.

Qutaybah added that Wakīʿ said that intiqāṣ al-māʾ means istinjāʾ (cleaning the private parts with water).
(١٢٠٤) مسلم:٢٦١aحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ زَكَرِيَّاءَ بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ شَيْبَةَ عَنْ طَلْقِ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «عَشْرٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ: (١) قَصُّ الشَّارِبِ (٢) وَإِعْفَاءُ اللِّحْيَةِ (٣) وَالسِّوَاكُ (٤) وَاسْتِنْشَاقُ الْمَاءِ (٥) وَقَصُّ الأَظْفَارِ (٦) وَغَسْلُ الْبَرَاجِمِ (٧) وَنَتْفُ الإِبْطِ (٨) وَحَلْقُ الْعَانَةِ (٩) وَانْتِقَاصُ الْمَاءِ۔»
قَالَ زَكَرِيَّاءُ قَالَ مُصْعَبٌ وَنَسِيتُ الْعَاشِرَةَ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَكُونَ (١٠) الْمَضْمَضَةَ

زَادَ قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ وَكِيعٌ انْتِقَاصُ الْمَاءِ يَعْنِي الاِسْتِنْجَاءَ

The Apostle of Allah ﷺ said: Trim closely the moustache, and let the beard grow.

(١٢٠٥) مسلم:٢٥٩aحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي جَمِيعًا عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى

(1205) nasai:5226ʿUbaydullāh b. Saʿīd > Yaḥyá > ʿUbaydullāh > Nāfiʿ > Ibn ʿUmar

The Prophet [SAW] said: "Trim the mustache and let the beard grow."

(١٢٠٥) النسائي:٥٢٢٦أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى

(1205) nasai:5045Muḥammad b. Bashhār > ʿAbd al-Raḥman > Sufyān > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAlqamah > Ibn ʿUmar

That the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "Trim the mustache and let the beard grow."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى

"Trim the mustache and let the beard grow."

(١٢٠٥) النسائي:١٥أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى هُوَ ابْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ وَأَعْفُوا اللِّحَى

Hadith of the five pillars of Islam

(1206) bukhari:8ʿUbaydullāh b. Mūsá > Ḥanẓalah b. Abū Sufyān > ʿIkrimah b. Khālid > Ibn ʿUmar

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Islam is based on ˹the following˺ five ˹practices˺: (1) to ˹verbally˺ testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, (2) to establish the Ṣalāh (five regular ritual prayers), (3) to give the Zakāh (obligatory charity), (4) ˹to perform˺ the Ḥajj (annual pilgrimage to Makkah), and (5) to observe fasts ˹during the month˺ of Ramaḍān."

(١٢٠٦) البخاري:٨حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا حَنْظَلَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ قَالَ قَالَ

رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «بُنِيَ الإِسْلاَمُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ: (١) شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، (٢) وَإِقَامِ الصَّلاَةِ، (٣) وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، (٤) وَالْحَجِّ، (٥) وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ۔»

I have given a pledge of allegiance to Messenger of Allah ﷺ for to testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Muhammad is His Apostle, to offer prayers perfectly, to pay Zakat, to listen to and obey (Allah's and His Prophet's orders), and to give good advice to every Muslim.

(١٢٠٦) البخاري:٢١٥٧حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ قَيْسٍ

سَمِعْتُ جَرِيرًا ؓ بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلاَةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَالسَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ وَالنُّصْحِ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

(1207) bukhari:46Ismāʿīl > Mālik b. Anas from his uncle Abū Suhayl b. Mālik from his father > Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbaydullāh

A man from Najd with unkempt hair came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we heard his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying, till he came near and then we came to know that he was asking about Islam. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have to offer prayers perfectly five times in a day and night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more (praying)?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil prayers (you can)." Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said to him: "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." The man asked, "Is there any more fasting?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, but if you want to observe the Nawafil fasts (you can.)" Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said to him, "You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity)." The man asked, "Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, unless you want to give alms of your own."
And then that man retreated saying, "By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will be granted Paradise)."

(١٢٠٧) البخاري:٤٦حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ عَنْ عَمِّهِ أَبِي سُهَيْلِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ طَلْحَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ أَهْلِ نَجْدٍ ثَائِرُ الرَّأْسِ يُسْمَعُ دَوِيُّ صَوْتِهِ وَلاَ يُفْقَهُ مَا يَقُولُ حَتَّى دَنَا فَإِذَا هُوَ يَسْأَلُ عَنِ الإِسْلاَمِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ» فَقَالَ: هَلْ عَلَىَّ غَيْرُهَا؟ قَالَ «لاَ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَطَوَّعَ» قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «وَصِيَامُ رَمَضَانَ» قَالَ: هَلْ عَلَىَّ غَيْرُهُ؟ قَالَ: «لاَ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَطَوَّعَ» قَالَ وَذَكَرَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «الزَّكَاةَ» قَالَ: هَلْ عَلَىَّ غَيْرُهَا؟ قَالَ: «لاَ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَطَوَّعَ»
قَالَ فَأَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَزِيدُ عَلَى هَذَا وَلاَ أَنْقُصُ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «أَفْلَحَ إِنْ صَدَقَ»

(1207) bukhari:2678Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbdullāh > Mālik from his uncle Abū Suhayl from his father > Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbaydullāh

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him about Islam, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have to offer five compulsory prayers in a day and a night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more compulsory prayers for me?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, unless you like to offer Nawafil (i.e. optional prayers)." Messenger of Allah ﷺ then added, "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." The man said, "Am I to fast any other days?' Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, unless you wish to observe the optional fast voluntarily." Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him about the compulsory Zakat. The man asked, "Do I have to give anything besides?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, unless you wish to give in charity voluntarily." So, the man departed saying, "By Allah I will neither do more nor less than that." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If he has said the truth he will be successful."

(١٢٠٧) البخاري:٢٦٧٨حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ عَنْ عَمِّهِ أَبِي سُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ طَلْحَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا هُوَ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الإِسْلاَمِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ فَقَالَ هَلْ عَلَىَّ غَيْرُهَا قَالَ لاَ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَطَّوَّعَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَصِيَامُ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ هَلْ عَلَىَّ غَيْرُهُ قَالَ لاَ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَطَّوَّعَ قَالَ وَذَكَرَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الزَّكَاةَ قَالَ هَلْ عَلَىَّ غَيْرُهَا قَالَ لاَ إِلاَّ أَنْ تَطَّوَّعَ فَأَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ وَهْوَ يَقُولُ وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَزِيدُ عَلَى هَذَا وَلاَ أَنْقُصُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَفْلَحَ إِنْ صَدَقَ

(1208) bukhari:1395Abū ʿĀṣim al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Makhlad > Zakariyyāʾ b. Isḥāq > Yaḥyá b.

The Prophet ﷺ sent Muʿadh to Yemen and said, "Invite the people to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and I am Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and if they obey you to do so, then teach them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in every day and night (in twenty-four hours), and if they obey you to do so, then teach them that Allah has made it obligatory for them to pay the Zakat from their property and it is to be taken from the wealthy among them and given to the poor."

(١٢٠٨) البخاري:١٣٩٥حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ الضَّحَّاكُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ عَنْ زَكَرِيَّاءَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْبَدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَعَثَ مُعَاذًا ؓ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ ادْعُهُمْ إِلَى شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لِذَلِكَ فَأَعْلِمْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدِ افْتَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لِذَلِكَ فَأَعْلِمْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ افْتَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَدَقَةً فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ تُؤْخَذُ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِهِمْ وَتُرَدُّ عَلَى فُقَرَائِهِمْ

(1208) bukhari:1458Umayyah b. Bisṭām > Yazīd b. Zurayʿ > Rawḥ b. al-Qāsim > Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah > Yaḥyá b.

When Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Muʿadh to Yemen, he said (to him), "YOU are going to people of a (Divine) Book. First of all invite them to worship Allah (alone) and when they come to know Allah, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them, five prayers in every day and night; and if they start offering these prayers, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them, the Zakat. And it is to be taken from the rich amongst them and given to the poor amongst them; and if they obey you in that, take Zakat from them and avoid (don't take) the best property of the people as Zakat."

(١٢٠٨) البخاري:١٤٥٨حَدَّثَنَا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ بِسْطَامٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْبَدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَمَّا بَعَثَ مُعَاذًا ؓ عَلَى الْيَمَنِ قَالَ إِنَّكَ تَقْدَمُ عَلَى قَوْمٍ أَهْلِ كِتَابٍ فَلْيَكُنْ أَوَّلَ مَا تَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَيْهِ عِبَادَةُ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا عَرَفُوا اللَّهَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي يَوْمِهِمْ وَلَيْلَتِهِمْ فَإِذَا فَعَلُوا فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهُمْ زَكَاةً {تُؤْخَذُ} مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَتُرَدُّ عَلَى فُقَرَائِهِمْ فَإِذَا أَطَاعُوا بِهَا فَخُذْ مِنْهُمْ وَتَوَقَّ كَرَائِمَ أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ

(1208) bukhari:1496Muḥammad > ʿAbdullāh > Zakariyyāʾ b. Isḥāq > Yaḥyá

(the slave of Ibn ʿAbbas) Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Muʿadh when he sent him to Yemen, "You will go to the people of the Scripture. So, when you reach there, invite them to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Apostle. And if they obey you in that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in each day and night. And if they obey you in that tell them that Allah has made it obligatory on them to pay the Zakat which will be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor among them. If they obey you in that, then avoid taking the best of their possessions, and be afraid of the curse of an oppressed person because there is no screen between his invocation and Allah."

(١٢٠٨) البخاري:١٤٩٦حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْبَدٍ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ حِينَ بَعَثَهُ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ إِنَّكَ سَتَأْتِي قَوْمًا أَهْلَ كِتَابٍ فَإِذَا جِئْتَهُمْ فَادْعُهُمْ إِلَى أَنْ يَشْهَدُوا أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لَكَ بِذَلِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لَكَ بِذَلِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُؤْخَذُ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِهِمْ فَتُرَدُّ عَلَى فُقَرَائِهِمْ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لَكَ بِذَلِكَ فَإِيَّاكَ وَكَرَائِمَ أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاتَّقِ دَعْوَةَ الْمَظْلُومِ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ اللَّهِ حِجَابٌ
