The Prophet’s supplication for the people of al-Baqi
Shall I not tell you about myself and about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? We said, “Yes.” He said: She said: When it was my night, the night in which the Prophet ﷺ was with me, he returned, placed his cloak down, took off his sandals and put them by his feet, spread the edge of his waist-wrapper over his bed, and lay down. He remained only long enough to think that I had fallen asleep, then he took his cloak slowly, put on his sandals slowly, opened the door and went out, then closed it gently. I put my shift over my head, covered my head, wrapped my waist-wrapper around myself, and then set out following him until he came to al-Baqi. He stood there and lengthened his standing, then raised his hands three times. Then he turned away, so I turned away; he quickened his pace, so I quickened mine; he trotted, so I trotted; he hastened, so I hastened; then I got ahead of him and entered.
No sooner had I lain down than he entered and said: “What is the matter with you, O Aish? Are you out of breath, with your chest heaving?” She said: I said, “Nothing.” He said: “You must tell me, or the Subtle, the All-Aware will surely inform me.” She said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you,” and I told him. He said: “So you were the dark figure I saw ahead of me?” I said, “Yes.” He gave me a shove in my chest that hurt me, then said: “Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would deal unjustly with you?” She said: Whatever people conceal, Allah knows it? “Yes.” He said: “Jibril came to me when you saw me; he called me, concealing it from you, and I answered him, concealing it from you. He would not enter upon you when you had put off your clothes. I thought you had fallen asleep, so I disliked waking you, and I feared that you would feel lonely. He said: Your Lord commands you to go to the people of al-Baqi and ask forgiveness for them.” She said: I said, “How should I speak to them, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Say: Peace be upon the inhabitants of these abodes, among the believers and the Muslims. May Allah have mercy on those of us who have gone ahead and those who come later, and we, if Allah wills, will surely join you.”
1.13 Bidding Farewell and Advising on the Eve of Departure for a Journey or Other Things
We came to the Prophet ﷺ and stayed with him for twenty days and nights. We were all young and of about the same age. The Prophet ﷺ was very kind and merciful. When he realized our longing for our families, he asked about our homes and the people there and we told him. Then he asked us to go back to our families and stay with them and teach them (the religion) and to order them to do good things. He also mentioned some other things which I have (remembered or [??] ) forgotten. The Prophet ﷺ then added, "Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer.
We went to the Prophet ﷺ and we were all young men and stayed with him for about twenty nights. The Prophet ﷺ was very merciful. He said, "When you return home, impart religious teachings to your families and tell them to offer perfectly such and such a prayer at such and such a time and such and such a prayer at such and such a time. And at the time of the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer."
Once Malik bin Huwairith said to his friends, "Shall I show you how Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer his prayers?" And it was not the time for any of the compulsory congregational prayers. So he stood up (for the prayer) bowed and said the Takbir, then he raised his head and remained standing for a while and then prostrated and raised his head for a while (sat up for a while). He prayed like our Sheikh ʿAmr Ibn Salama. (Aiyub said, "The latter used to do a thing which I did not see the people doing i.e. he used to sit between the third and the fourth rakʿa). Malik bin Huwairith said, "We came to the Prophet (after embracing Islam) and stayed with him. He said to us, 'When you go back to your families, pray such and such a prayer at such and such a time, pray such and such a prayer at such and such a time, and when there is the time for the prayer then only of you should pronounce the Adhan for the prayer and the oldest of you should lead the prayer."
We came to the Prophet ﷺ and we were (a few) young men of approximately equal age and stayed with him for twenty nights. Then he thought that we were anxious for our families, and he asked us whom we had left behind to look after our families, and we told him. He was kindhearted and merciful, so he said, "Return to your families and teach them (religious knowledge) and order them (to do good deeds) and offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers, and when the stated time for the prayer becomes due, then one of you should pronounce its call (i.e. the Adhan), and the eldest of you should lead you in prayer.
We came to the Prophet ﷺ and we were young men nearly of equal ages and we stayed with him for twenty nights. Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a very kind man and when he realized our longing for our families, he asked us about those whom we had left behind. When we informed him, he said, "Go back to your families and stay with them and teach them (religion) and order them (to do good deeds). The Prophet ﷺ mentioned things some of which I remembered and some I did not. Then he said, "Pray as you have seen me praying, and when it is the time of prayer, one of you should pronounce the call (Adhan) for the prayer and the eldest of you should lead the prayer. "
I sought permission of the Prophet ﷺ to perform umrah. He gave me permission and said: My younger brother, do not forget me in your supplication. He (Umar) said: He told me a word that pleased me so much so that I would not have been pleased if I were given the whole world. The narrator Shu'bah said: I then met Asim at Medina. He narrated to me this tradition and reported the wordings: "My younger brother, share me in your supplication."
when he intended to undertake a journey, Ibn ʿUmar used to say to a person to “Come close to me so that I may bid you farewell as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to bid us farewell.” Then he would say: “I entrust to Allah your religion, and your trusts, and the last of your deeds (Astawdiʿullāha dīnaka wa amānataka wa khawātīma ʿamalik).”
When the Prophet ﷺ wanted to say farewell to an army, he would say: I entrust to Allah your religion, what you are responsible for, and your final deeds.
“A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: ‘I intend to undertake a journey, so give me provision. He said: ‘May Allah grant you Taqwa as your provision (Zawwadak Allāhut-taqwā).’ He said: ‘Give me more.’ He said: ‘And may He forgive your sin (Wa ghafara dhanbak).’ He said: ‘Give me more, may my father be ransomed for you, and my mother.’ He said: ‘And may He make goodness easy for you wherever you are (Wa yassara lakal-khaira ḥaithu mā kunt).’”
1.14 Istikhara (Seeking Guidance from Allah), and Consultation
Dua of istikharah (دعاء الاستخارة) to be done before making notable choices
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us the way of doing istikhārah (seeking Allah's help while making a choice), in all matters as he taught us the Surahs of the Quran. He said, "If anyone of you is concerned regarding a matter, he should offer a two-rakʿah Ṣalāh outside of the obligatory ones and should say:
allāhumma inni astakhīruka bi-ʿilmika, wa-astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa-asʾaluka min fadlik al-ʿaẓīm, fa-innaka taqdiru wala aqdiru, wa-taʿlamu wa-la aʿlamu, wa anta ʿallām al-ghuyūb.
allāhumma in kunta taʿlamu anna {hādhā al-amra} khayrun lī fī dīni wa-maʿāshī wa-ʿāqibati amrī," or said, "fi ʿājili amrī wa-ājilihī, fa-uqdurhu lī wa-yassirhu lī, thumma bārik lī fīh; wa-in kunta taʿlamu anna {hādhā al-amra} sharrun lī fī dīni wa-maʿāshī wa-ʿāqibati amrī," or said, "fī ʿājili amri wa-ʿājilihī fa-iṣrifhu ʿannī wa-iṣrifnī ʿanhu, wa-uqdur līya al-khayra ḥaythu kāna, thumma arḍini bi-hī.
(O Allah! I seek ˹Your help˺ in making a choice through Your knowledge and seek the ability ˹to do so˺ through Your Power, and I ask You for Your Great Blessings. For You are capable and I am not. You know ˹better˺, and I do not, and You know the ˹matters of the˺ unseen."
O Allah! If You know that {such a matter} is good for me, my religion, my livelihood, and my Hereafter..." or he said, "for my short-term ˹goals˺ as well as my long-term ˹goals˺, then ordain it for me and make its ˹path˺ easy for me and then bestow Your blessings upon it. If You know that {such a matter} is bad for me, my religion, my livelihood, and for my Hereafter..." or he said, "for my short-term ˹goals˺ as well as my long-term ˹goals˺, then remove it from ˹my path,˺ and remove me from ˹its path˺ and ˹instead˺ ordain for me good, whatever it may be, and let me be content with it.)"
He said: he should name his need (in place of what is mentioned in brackets).
1.15 Excellence of Adopting Different Routes for Going and Returning on 'Eid Prayer and Various Other Occasions
Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enter Mecca from the high Thaniya and used to leave Mecca from the low Thaniya.
1.16 Excellence of Using the Right Hand for Performing Various Good Acts
The Prophet ﷺ used to like to start from the right side on wearing shoes, combing his hair and cleaning or washing himself and on doing anything else.
The Prophet ﷺ used his right hand for getting water for ablution and taking food, and his left hand for his evacuation and for anything repugnant.
That the Prophet ﷺ at the time of washing his deceased daughter had said to them, "Start from the right side beginning with those parts which are washed in ablution."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ , concerning his (dead) daughter's bath, said, "Start with the right side, and the parts which are washed in ablution."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you want to put on your shoes, put on the right shoe first; and if you want to take them off, take the left one first. Let the right shoe be the first to be put on and the last to be taken off."
Beginning with the right side in dressing and wudu
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When you put on clothing, and when you perform ablution, begin with your right sides."
