I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was on the pulpit, saying, "Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughira have requested me to allow them to marry their daughter to ʿAli bin Abu Talib, but I don't give permission, and will not give permission unless ʿAli bin Abi Talib divorces my daughter in order to marry their daughter, because Fatima is a part of my body, and I hate what she hates to see, and what hurts her, hurts me."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ وَهْوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ إِنَّ بَنِي هِشَامِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ اسْتَأْذَنُوا فِي أَنْ يُنْكِحُوا ابْنَتَهُمْ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَلاَ آذَنُ ثُمَّ لاَ آذَنُ ثُمَّ لاَ آذَنُ إِلاَّ أَنْ يُرِيدَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَ ابْنَتِي وَيَنْكِحَ ابْنَتَهُمْ فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يُرِيبُنِي مَا أَرَابَهَا وَيُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا هَكَذَا قَالَ  

Al Miswar bin Makramah said that he heard the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ say on the pulpit Banu Hashim bin Al Mughirah sought permission from me to marry their daughter to ‘Ali bin Abi Talib. But I do not permit, again, I do not permit, again, I do not permit except that Ibn Abi Talib divorces my daughter and marries their daughter. My daughter is my part, what makes her uneasy makes me uneasy and what troubles her troubles me. The full information rests with the tradition narrated by Ahmad.  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ إِنَّ بَنِي هِشَامِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ اسْتَأْذَنُونِي أَنْ يُنْكِحُوا ابْنَتَهُمْ مِنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَلاَ آذَنُ ثُمَّ لاَ آذَنُ ثُمَّ لاَ آذَنُ إِلاَّ أَنْ يُرِيدَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَ ابْنَتِي وَيَنْكِحَ ابْنَتَهُمْ فَإِنَّمَا ابْنَتِي بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يُرِيبُنِي مَا أَرَابَهَا وَيُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا وَالإِخْبَارُ فِي حَدِيثِ أَحْمَدَ  

"While he was on the Minbar, I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying: 'Indeed Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughirah asked me if they could marry their daughter to 'Ali bin Abi Talib. But I do not allow it, I do not allow it, I do not allow it - unless 'Ali bin Abi Talib wishes to divorce my daughter and marry their daughter, because she is a part of me. I am displeased by what displeases her, and I am harmed by what harms her."  

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ إِنَّ بَنِي هِشَامِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ اسْتَأْذَنُونِي فِي أَنْ يُنْكِحُوا ابْنَتَهُمْ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَلاَ آذَنُ ثُمَّ لاَ آذَنُ ثُمَّ لاَ آذَنُ إِلاَّ أَنْ يُرِيدَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَ ابْنَتِي وَيَنْكِحَ ابْنَتَهُمْ فَإِنَّهَا بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يَرِيبُنِي مَا رَابَهَا وَيُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ بَنِي هِشَامِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ اسْتَأْذَنُونِي فِي أَنْ يُنْكِحُوا ابْنَتَهُمْ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَلَا آذَنُ ثُمَّ لَا آذَنُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُرِيدَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَ ابْنَتِي وَيَنْكِحَ ابْنَتَهُمْ فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ بِضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يَرِيبُنِي مَا أَرَابَهَا وَيُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا»  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ giving a sermon in Mecca, and then he said: "The Bani Hashim asked me for permission to marry their daughter to Ali, but I did not give permission. I will not give permission unless the son of Abu Talib wants to separate from my daughter and marry their daughter." Then he said: "Indeed, Fatimah is part of me and hurts me if she is hurt and worries me if she is worried. It is not permissible for him to combine the daughter of the enemy of Allah with the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِمَكَّةَ يَخْطُبُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ بَنِي هِشَامٍ اسْتَأْذَنُونِي فِي أَنْ يَنْكِحُوا ابْنَتَهُمْ عَلِيًّا وَإِنِّي لَا آذَنُ ثُمَّ لَا آذَنُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُرِيدَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنْ يُفَارِقَ ابْنَتِي وَأَنْ يَنْكِحَ ابْنَتَهُمْ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ مُضْغَةٌ أَوْ بِضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا وَيَرِيبُنِي مَا أَرَابَهَا وَمَا كَانَ لَهُ أَنْ يَجْمَعَ بَيْنَ بِنْتِ عَدُوِّ اللهِ وَبَيْنَ ابْنَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ»  

[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "The Banu Mughira asked me for permission to marry their daughter to Ali ibn Abi Talib, but I did not grant permission. I did not grant permission. I did not grant permission, unless Ibn Abi Talib wants to divorce my daughter and marry their daughter. Verily, she is a piece of me that makes me doubtful about what pleases her and harms me in what harms her." And Abu Al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Ubaid informed us that Abbas ibn Al-Fadl Al-Asfati informed us that Abu Al-Walid informed us that Al-Laith mentioned it in meaning, except that he did not mention his statement "that makes me doubtful about what pleases her."  

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّ بَنِي الْمُغِيرَةِ اسْتَأْذَنُونِي أَنْ يَنْكِحُوا ابْنَتَهُمْ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَلَا آذَنُ ثُمَّ لَا آذَنُ ثُمَّ لَا آذَنُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُرِيدَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَ ابْنَتِي وَيَنْكِحَ ابْنَتَهُمْ إِنَّمَا هِيَ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يَرِيبُنِي مَا رَابَهَا وَيُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا 14799 وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ أنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ نا عَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ نا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ نا اللَّيْثُ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمَعْنَاهُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ قَوْلَهُ يَرِيبُنِي مَا رَابَهَا  

"إِنَّ بَنى هِشَام بن المغيرة اسْتأذَنُونِى في أنْ يُنْكِحُوا ابْنتَهُمْ علىّ بنَ أبى طالبٍ، فَلَا إِذنَ، ثُمَّ، لَا إِذنَ، ثُمَّ لَا إِذْنَ، إِلَّا أنْ يُرِيد ابن أَبى طالب أن يُطَلِّق ابْنَتى، وينكحَ ابْنَتَهُم، فإِنما هى بُضْعَةٌ منِّى، يُريبُنى مَا أرابَها ويؤْذينى ما آذَاها".
