I was with the Prophet ﷺ in a Ghazwa (Military Expedition) and my camel was slow and exhausted. The Prophet came up to me and said, "O Jabir." I replied, "Yes?" He said, "What is the matter with you?" I replied, "My camel is slow and tired, so I am left behind." So, he got down and poked the camel with his stick and then ordered me to ride. I rode the camel and it became so fast that I had to hold it from going ahead of Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He then asked me, have you got married?" I replied in the affirmative. He asked, "A virgin or a matron?" I replied, "I married a matron." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why have you not married a virgin, so that you may play with her and she may play with you?" Jabir replied, "I have sisters (young in age) so I liked to marry a matron who could collect them all and comb their hair and look after them." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You will reach, so when you have arrived (at home), I advise you to associate with your wife (that you may have an intelligent son)." Then he asked me, "Would you like to sell your camel?" I replied in the affirmative and the Prophet ﷺ purchased it for one Uqiya of gold. Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached before me and I reached in the morning, and when I went to the mosque, I found him at the door of the mosque. He asked me, "Have you arrived just now?" I replied in the affirmative. He said, "Leave your camel and come into (the mosque) and pray two rakʿat." I entered and offered the prayer. He told Bilal to weigh and give me one Uqiya of gold. So Bilal weighed for me fairly and I went away. The Prophet ﷺ sent for me and I thought that he would return to me my camel which I hated more than anything else. But the Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Take your camel as well as its price."

Narrated Anas bin Malik Once the Prophet ﷺ entered the Mosque and saw a rope hanging in between its two pillars. He said, "What is this rope?" The people said, "This rope is for Zainab who, when she feels tired, holds it (to keep standing for the prayer.)" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Don't use it. Remove the rope. You should pray as long as you feel active, and when you get tired, sit down."
Once the Prophet ﷺ came while a woman was sitting with me. He said, "Who is she?" I replied, "She is so and so," and told him about her (excessive) praying. He said disapprovingly, "Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity (without being overtaxed) as Allah does not get tired (of giving rewards) but (surely) you will get tired and the best deed (act of Worship) in the sight of Allah is that which is done regularly."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If anyone of you feels drowsy while praying he should go to bed (sleep) till his slumber is over because in praying while drowsy one does not know whether one is asking for forgiveness or for a bad thing for oneself."

The Prophet ﷺ heard a reciter reciting, the Qur'an in the mosque at night. The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on him, as he has remind ed me of such-and-such Verses of such and-such Suras, which I missed!"
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The example of the person who knows the Qur'an by heart is like the owner of tied camels. If he keeps them tied, he will control them, but if he releases them, they will run away."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is a bad thing that some of you say, 'I have forgotten such-and-such verse of the Qur'an,' for indeed, he has been caused (by Allah) to forget it. So you must keep on reciting the Qur'an because it escapes from the hearts of men faster than camel do."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Commit yourself to the Qur'an, for by Him in whose Hand is my soul, it is surely more prone to break away than a camel in its bind.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah does not listen to a prophet as He listens to a prophet who recites the Qur'an in a pleasant tone." The companion of the sub-narrator (Abu Salama) said, "It means, reciting it aloud."
That the Prophet ﷺ said to him' "O Abu Musa! You have been given one of the mazamir (sweet melodious voices) of the family of David.'
6.35 Mentioning the recitation of the Prophet ﷺ of Surat al-Fath on the day of the conquest of Makkah
I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the Conquest of Mecca over his she-camel, reciting Surat-al-Fath in a vibrant quivering tone. (The sub-narrator, Mu'awiya added, "Were I not afraid that the people may gather around me, I would recite in vibrant quivering tone as he (i.e. ʿAbdullah bin Mughaffal) did, imitating Messenger of Allah ﷺ.")
6.36 The descent of tranquility (sakinah) when the Qur’an is recited
A man recited Surat-al-Kahf (in his prayer) and in the house there was a (riding) animal which got frightened and started jumping. The man finished his prayer with Taslim, but behold! A mist or a cloud hovered over him. He informed the Prophet ﷺ of that and the Prophet ﷺ said, "O so-and-so! Recite, for this (mist or cloud) was a sign of peace descending for the recitation of Qur'an."
That while he was reciting Surat Al-Baqara (The Cow) at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled. When he stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again. Then he stopped reciting and the horse became quiet too. He started reciting again and the horse was startled and troubled once again. Then he stopped reciting and his son, Yahya was beside the horse. He was afraid that the horse might trample on him. When he took the boy away and looked towards the sky, he could not see it. The next morning he informed the Prophet who said, "Recite, O Ibn Hudair! Recite, O Ibn Hudair!" Ibn Hudair replied, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! My son, Yahya was near the horse and I was afraid that it might trample on him, so I looked towards the sky, and went to him. When I looked at the sky, I saw something like a cloud containing what looked like lamps, so I went out in order not to see it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you know what that was?" Ibn Hudair replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared.
6.37 The virtue of the one who memorizes the Qur’an
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The example of a Believer who recites the Qur'an, is that of a citron which smells good and tastes good; And the example of a Believer who does not recite the Qur'an, is that of a date which has no smell but tastes sweet; and the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur'an, is that of an aromatic plant which smells good but tastes bitter; and the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an, is that of a colocynth plant which has no smell and is bitter in taste."
6.38 The virtue of the one who is skilled in reciting Qur’an and the one who falters in reciting
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Such a person as recites the Qur'an and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Qur'an by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward."
6.39 It is recommended to recite the Qur’an to people of virtue who are skilled in its recitation, even if the reciter is better than the one to whom it is recited
The Prophet ﷺ said to Ubai, "Allah has ordered me to recite to you: 'Those who disbelieve (Surat-al- Bayina 98).' " Ubai said, "Has He mentioned my name?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes." On hearing this, Ubai started weeping.
6.40 The virtue of listening to the Qur’an, asking one who has memorized it to recite so that one may listen, weeping when reciting, and pondering the meanings
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said (to me), "Recite the Qur'an to me." I said, "Shall I recite (it) to you while it has been revealed to you?" He said, "I like to hear it from another person." So I recited Surat An-Nisa (The Women) till I reached the Verse: 'How (will it be) then when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people.' (4.41) Then he said to me, "Stop!" Thereupon I saw his eyes overflowing with tears.

While we were in the city of Hims (in Syria), Ibn Masʿud recited Surat Yusuf. A man said to him), "It was not revealed in this way." Then Ibn Masʿud said, "I recited it in this way before Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he confirmed my recitation by saying, 'Well done!' " Ibn Masʿud detected the smell of wine from the man's mouth, so he said to him, "Aren't you ashamed of telling a lie about Allah's Book and (along with this) you drink alcoholic liquors too?" Then he lashed him according to the law.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is sufficient for one to recite the last two Verses of Surat-al-Baqara at night."
6.47 The virtue of one who acts in accordance with the Qur’an and teaches it. And the virtue of one who learns wisdom from Fiqh or other types of knowledge, then acts upon it and teaches it
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Not to wish to be the like of except the like of two (persons): a man whom Allah has given the knowledge of the Qur'an and he recites it during the hours of the night and the hours of the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it (in Allah's Cause) during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not wish to be like anyone except in two cases. (The first is) A person, whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously; (the second is) the one whom Allah has given wisdom (the Holy Qur'an) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others." 6.48 The clarification that the Qur’an was revealed in seven ahruf (modes of recitation), and clarifying its meaning
I heard Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam reciting Surat-al-Furqan in a way different to that of mine. Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taught it to me (in a different way). So, I was about to quarrel with him (during the prayer) but I waited till he finished, then I tied his garment round his neck and seized him by it and brought him to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I have heard him reciting Surat-al-Furqan in a way different to the way you taught it to me." The Prophet ﷺ ordered me to release him and asked Hisham to recite it. When he recited it, Allah s Apostle said, "It was revealed in this way." He then asked me to recite it. When I recited it, he said, "It was revealed in this way. The Qur'an has been revealed in seven different ways, so recite it in the way that is easier for you."

A man came to Ibn Masʿud and said, "I recited the Mufassal (Suras) at night in one rakʿa." Ibn Masʿud said, "This recitation is (too quick) like the recitation of poetry. I know the identical Suras which the Prophet ﷺ used to recite in pairs." Ibn Masʿud then mentioned 20 Mufassal Suras including two Suras from the family of (i.e. those verses which begin with) Ha, Meem [??] (which the Prophet ﷺ used to recite) in each rakʿa.

Saʿd bin 'Ubada became sick and the Prophet ﷺ along with ʿAbdur Rahman bin ʿAuf, Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas and ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud visited him to inquire about his health. When he came to him, he found him surrounded by his household and he asked, "Has he died?" They said, "No, O Allah's Apostle." The Prophet ﷺ wept and when the people saw the weeping of Messenger of Allah ﷺ they all wept. He said, "Will you listen? Allah does not punish for shedding tears, nor for the grief of the heart but he punishes or bestows His Mercy because of this." He pointed to his tongue and added, "The deceased is punished for the wailing of his relatives over him." ʿUmar used to beat with a stick and throw stones and put dust over the faces (of those who used to wail over the dead).

The companions of ʿAbdullah (bin Masʿud) came to Abu Darda', (and before they arrived at his home), he looked for them and found them. Then he asked them,: 'Who among you can recite (Qur'an) as ʿAbdullah recites it?" They replied, "All of us." He asked, "Who among you knows it by heart?" They pointed at 'Alqama. Then he asked Alqama. "How did you hear ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud reciting Surat Al-Lail (The Night)?" Alqama recited: 'By the male and the female.' Abu Ad-Darda said, "I testify that I heard me Prophet reciting it likewise, but these people want me to recite it:-- 'And by Him Who created male and female.' but by Allah, I will not follow them."

6.51 The times when it is forbidden to offer salat
"The Prophet ﷺ forbade praying after the Fajr prayer till the sun rises and after the ʿAsr prayer till the sun sets." Narrated Ibn ʿAbbas: Some people told me the same narration (as above).
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "There is no prayer after the morning prayer till the sun rises, and there is no prayer after the ʿAsr prayer till the sun sets."
Ibn ʿUmar said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not pray at the time of sunrise and at the time of sunset.' " Ibn ʿUmar said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If the edge of the sun appears (above the horizon) delay the prayer till it becomes high, and if the edge of the sun disappears, delay the prayer till it sets (disappears completely).' "
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the (upper) edge of the sun appears (in the morning), don't perform a prayer till the sun appears in full, and when the lower edge of the sun sets, don't perform a prayer till it sets completely. And you should not seek to pray at sunrise or sunset for the sun rises between two sides of the head of the devil (or Satan).
6.54 Concerning the two rakʿah that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray after ʿAsr
I was sent to Aisha by Ibn ʿAbbas, Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Azhar . They told me to greet her on their behalf and to ask her about the offering of the two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer and to say to her, "We were informed that you offer those two rakʿat and we were told that the Prophet had forbidden offering them." Ibn ʿAbbas said, "I along with ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab used to beat the people whenever they offered them." I went to Aisha and told her that message. ʿAisha said, "Go and ask Um Salama about them." So I returned and informed them about her statement. They then told me to go to Um Salama with the same question with which t sent me to ʿAisha. Um Salama replied, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ forbidding them. Later I saw him offering them immediately after he prayed the ʿAsr prayer. He then entered my house at a time when some of the Ansari women from the tribe of Bani Haram were sitting with me, so I sent my slave girl to him having said to her, 'Stand beside him and tell him that Um Salama says to you, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have heard you forbidding the offering of these (two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer) but I have seen you offering them." If he waves his hand then wait for him.' The slave girl did that. The Prophet ﷺ beckoned her with his hand and she waited for him. When he had finished the prayer he said, "O daughter of Bani Umaiya! You have asked me about the two rakʿat after the ʿAsr prayer. The people of the tribe of ʿAbdul-Qais came to me and made me busy and I could not offer the two rakʿat after the Zuhr prayer. These (two rakʿat that I have just prayed) are for those (missed) ones.

6.55 It is recommended to pray two rakʿah before Maghrib
"When the Mu'adh-dhin pronounced the Adhan, some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ would proceed to the pillars of the mosque (for the prayer) till the Prophet ﷺ arrived and in this way they used to pray two rakʿat before the Maghrib prayer. There used to be a little time between the Adhan and the Iqama." Shuʿba said, "There used to be a very short interval between the two (Adhan and Iqama).
6.56 Between every two calls, there is a prayer
The prophet said, "There is a prayer between the two Adhans (Adhan and Iqama), there is a prayer between the two Adhans." And then while saying it the third time he added, "For the one who wants to (pray).
6.57 The fear prayer
Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the Fear-prayer with one of the two batches of the army while the other (batch) faced the enemy. Then the first batch went away and took places of their companions (i.e. second batch) and the second batch came and he led his second rakʿa with them. Then he (i.e. the Prophet: finished his prayer with Taslim and then each of the two batches got up and completed their remaining one rakʿa.
(describing the Fear prayer): The Imam stands up facing the Qibla and one batch of them (i.e. the army) (out of the two) prays along with him and the other batch faces the enemy. The Imam offers one rakʿa with the first batch they themselves stand up alone and offer one bowing and two prostrations while they are still in their place, and then go away to relieve the second batch, and the second batch comes (and takes the place of the first batch in the prayer behind the Imam) and he offers the second rakʿa with them. So he completes his two-rakʿat and then the second batch bows and prostrates two prostrations (i.e. complete their second rakʿa and thus all complete their prayer). (This hadith has also been narrated through two other chain by Sahl b. Abi Hathma)
Concerning those who witnessed the Fear Prayer that was performed in the battle of Dhat-ur-Riqa' in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ; One batch lined up behind him while another batch (lined up) facing the enemy. The Prophet ﷺ led the batch that was with him in one rakʿa, and he stayed in the standing posture while that batch completed their (two rakʿat) prayer by themselves and went away, lining in the face of the enemy, while the other batch came and he (i.e. the Prophet) offered his remaining rakʿa with them, and then, kept on sitting till they completed their prayer by themselves, and he then finished his prayer with Taslim along with them.
"We were in the company of the Prophet (during the battle of) Dhat-ur-Riqa', and we came across a shady tree and we left it for the Prophet (to take rest under its shade). A man from the pagans came while the Prophet's sword was hanging on the tree. He took it out of its sheath secretly and said (to the Prophet ﷺ ), 'Are you afraid of me?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'No.' He said, 'Who can save you from me?' The Prophet ﷺ said, Allah.' The companions of the Prophet ﷺ threatened him, then the Iqama for the prayer was announced and the Prophet ﷺ offered a two rakʿat Fear prayer with one of the two batches, and that batch went aside and he offered two rakʿa-t with the other batch. So the Prophet ﷺ offered four rakʿat but the people offered two rakʿat only." (The subnarrator) Abu Bishr added, "The man was Ghaurath bin Al-Harith and the battle was waged against Muharib Khasafa."
