[AI] He was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came and entered the mosque and prayed. When he finished his prayer, he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Go back and pray, as you have not prayed." He mentioned this either twice or three times. The man said, "I do not know what you mean by not praying properly." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prayer of none of you is complete until he performs ablution as Allah the Almighty has commanded. He washes his face and hands up to the elbows, wipes his head and feet up to the ankles. Then he says the takbeer, praises and glorifies Allah, recites from the Qur'an what Allah has permitted him, then he says the takbeer, bows and places his hands on his knees until his joints are still. Then he stands straight, saying, 'Allah hears whoever praises Him.' He stands straight until every bone returns to its place. Then he performs prostration and places his forehead on the ground until his joints are still. He stands straight, saying the takbeer, raises his head and sits straight on his sitting position while keeping his back straight. He establishes his prayer in this manner until he is finished. Then he said, 'None of your prayers are complete until you do this.'"

A man entered the mosque...... He then narrated the tradition like the one narrated in (No.855). This version is as follows: The Prophet ﷺ said: The prayer of anyone is not perfect unless he performs ablution perfectly; he should then utter the takbir, and praise Allah, the Exalted, and admire Him; he should then recite the Qur'an as much as he desires. He should then say: "Allah is Most Great". Next he should bow so that all his joints return to their proper places. Then he should say: "Allah listens to the one who praises Him", and stand erect. He should then say:"Allah is most great," and should prostrate himself so that all his joints are completely at rest. Then he should say: "Allah is most great"; he should raise his head (at the end of prostration) till he sits erect. Then he should say: "Allah is most great"; then he should prostrate himself till all his joints return to their proper places. Then he should raise his head and say the takbir. When he does so, then his prayer is completed.

This version (of Hadith No 856) adds: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The prayer of any of you is not complete until he performs ablution perfectly, as Allah, the Exalted, has ordered you. He should wash his face and hands up to the elbows, and wipe his head and (wash) his feet up to the ankles. Then he should exalt Allah and praise Him. Then he should recite the Qur'an as much as it is convenient for him. (Narrator then narrated the tradition like Hammad's, No. 856). He said: He then utter the takbir and prostration himself so that his face is at rest. Hammam (sub-narrator) said: Sometimes he reported: So that his forehead is at rest on the ground, and his joints return to their places and are loosened. Then he should say the takbir and then sit right on his hips and erect his back. He described the nature of prayer in this way by offering four rak'ahs until he finished it. The prayer of any of you is not complete unless he does so.

[AI] A man entered the mosque and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting, so he prayed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to repeat his prayer two or three times. The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, why do I have to repeat my prayer two or three times?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prayer of none of the people is complete until he performs ablution, placing the ablution in its proper places, then he says 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), then praises Allah the Almighty and glorifies Him, then recites whatever is easy for him from the Qur'an, then he says 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) until he feels relaxation in his joints, then he says 'Samia Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears whoever praises Him), until he is standing straight, then he says 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) and prostrates until he feels relaxation in his joints, then he raises his head until he is sitting straight, then he prostrates again until he feels relaxation in his joints. If he does not do this, his prayer is not complete."

"One day Messenger of Allah was sitting in the Masjid" Rifa'ah said: "And we were with him. Then what appeared to be a Bedouin man entered to pray, but he performed his Salat in a very brief manner. He then got up and greeted the prophet with Salam. The Prophet said (returning the greeting): 'And upon you. Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have no prayed.' So he returned to perform Salat then came and greeted the Prophet with Salam. So he (the Prophet) said (returning the greeting): 'And upon you. Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have not prayed.' [He did that] two or three times, each time coming to the Prophet, greeted the Prophet with Salam and the Prophet saying: 'And upon you. Go back and perform Salat, for indeed you have not prayed.' - until the people got scared and became very worried that one whose prayer was so brief had not actually prayed. Then in the end the man said: 'Then show me, and teach me, for I am a human who has suffered and is mistaken.' So he said: 'Alright. When you stand for Salat then perform Wudu as Allah ordered you. Then say the Tashahhud, and the Iqamah as well. If you know any Quran then recite it, if not then praise Allah, mention His greatness, and the Tahlil. Then bow such that you are at rest in your bowing, then stand completely, then prostrate completely, then sit such that you are at rest while sitting them stand. When you have done that, then you have completed your Salat, and if you leave out something, then you have made your Salat deficient.' And this was easier on them than the first matter, because if some of this was deficient, It would only reduce the reward of his Salat, it would not have gone entirely. A man entered the mosque while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in one side of the mosque. The man prayed, came, and greeted the Prophet. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Wa 'Alaikas Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray as you have not prayed (properly)." The man returned, repeated his prayer, came back and greeted the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Wa alaika-s-Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray again as you have not prayed (properly)." The man said at the second or third time, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Kindly teach me how to pray". The Prophet ﷺ said, "When you stand for prayer, perform ablution properly and then face the Qibla and say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar), and then recite what you know from the Qur'an, and then bow with calmness till you feel at ease then rise from bowing, till you stand straight, and then prostrate calmly (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease and then prostrate with calmness (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease in the sitting position, and do likewise in whole of your prayer." And Abu Usama added, "Till you stand straight." (See Hadith No. 759, Vol.1) (Using translation from Bukhārī 6251)

[AI] He was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came and entered the mosque and prayed. When he finished his prayer, he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." He returned and prayed, and we observed his prayer, not knowing what was wrong with it. When he finished his prayer, he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." He mentioned this either two or three times. The man said, "I do not know what wrong I have done in my prayer." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the prayer is not complete for any of you until he performs ablution as prescribed by Allah. He should wash his face and hands up to the elbows, wipe his head and his feet up to the ankles, then he should say the takbir and praise and glorify Allah, and recite from the Qur'an whatever Allah has permitted him. Then he should say the takbir and bow, placing his palms on his knees until his joints are at rest, then he should stand up straight until all his bones return to their place, then he should say, 'Allah hears the one who praises Him.' Then he should stand until all his joints are at rest, then he should say the takbir and prostrate, placing his forehead on the ground until his joints are at rest, then he should stand up straight until all his bones return to their place, then he should say the takbir and sit on his left thigh, keeping his back straight, and then he should recite the tashahhud, and describe the prayer in this manner until he finishes. Then he said, 'The prayer of any one of you is not complete until he does that.'"

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man praying in the mosque one day. When the man finished, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah and said, "Peace be upon you. Please tell me, how can I pray better?". The Messenger of Allah replied, "When you stand up to pray, perform the ablution properly and then say the takbeer. When you are standing straight, recite Surah Al-Fatiha, and then recite from the Quran whatever you have with you. Then, bow down until you feel at ease while bowing, and then raise your head until you are standing straight and say 'Allah hears the one who praises Him'. Then, prostrate until you feel at ease while prostrating, and then raise your head until you are sitting straight. Do this in your entire prayer. " (3948)

Narrated Abu Zakariyya and Abu Bakr: Abu Al-Abbas narrated to us, from Baher, who said that it has been recited over Ibn Wahb, that Dawud bin Qais told you that Dawud bin Qais informed him, that his father who is Badri [Muslim fighter in the Battle of Badr] told him, that he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah in the mosque. Then, he mentioned the Hadith and the Messenger of Allah said to him, "When you complete your prayer in this way, your prayer is complete, and whatever you have missed is a deficiency in your prayer." Ibn Wahb attributed this story to what has passed, and Yunnus bin Abd al-A'la narrated it to us from Dawud bin Qais, but he went against the chain of narration and mentioned the recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha. (3949)

Narrated Abu Ali Al-Rudhbary, who informed us, that Abu Bakr bin Dasa narrated to me, from Abu Dawud, from Wahb bin Baqiyyah, from Khalid, from Mohammed bin Amr, from Ali bin Yahya bin Khaled, from Rifaa'ah bin Rafi', with the same story, and he said, "When you stand up, then turn towards the Qibla and say the takbeer. Then, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and whatever Allah wills you to recite. When you bow down, place your hands on your knees and straighten your back. When you prostrate, make a space for your prostration. When you raise your head, sit on your left thigh."
