O people, impose the prescribed punishment upon your slaves, those who are married and those not married, for a slave-woman belonging to Messenger of Allah ﷺ had committed adultery, and he committed me to flog her. But she had recently given birth to a child and I was afraid that if I flogged her I might kill her. So I mentioned that to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and he said: You have done well.  

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَقِيمُوا عَلَى أَرِقَّائِكُمُ الْحَدَّ مَنْ أَحْصَنَ مِنْهُمْ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُحْصِنْ فَإِنَّ أَمَةً لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَنَتْ فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَجْلِدَهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِنِفَاسٍ فَخَشِيتُ إِنْ أَنَا جَلَدْتُهَا أَنْ أَقْتُلَهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ  

"Ali gave a Khutbah, and said: 'O people, establish the penalties upon your slaves, those married from them and those unmarried. A slave girl of the Prophet ﷺ committed illegal sexual intercourse so he ordered me to whip her. I went to her and she was just experiencing her post-natal bleeding, so I feared that if I were to whip her I would kill her' - or he said: 'She would die' - 'so I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I told that to him. So he said: 'You did well.'"  

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَقِيمُوا الْحُدُودَ عَلَى أَرِقَّائِكُمْ مَنْ أَحْصَنَ مِنْهُمْ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُحْصِنْ وَإِنَّ أَمَةً لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَنَتْ فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَجْلِدَهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ حَدِيثَةُ عَهْدٍ بِنِفَاسٍ فَخَشِيتُ إِنْ أَنَا جَلَدْتُهَا أَنْ أَقْتُلَهَا أَوْ قَالَ تَمُوتَ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ  

ʿAli (ؓ )addressed us and said: O people, carry out the hadd punishments on your slaves, both those who have been married and those who have not been married, for a slave woman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ committed zina and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to carry out the hadd Punishment on her. I went to her and found that she was still bleeding following childbirth, and I was afraid that if I flogged her she would die So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about that, and he said: “You have done well.”  

عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَخَطَبَنَا عَلِيٌّ قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَقِيمُوا عَلَى أَرِقَّائِكُمُ الْحُدُودَ مَنِ احْصِنَ مِنْهُمْ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُحْصَنْ فَإِنَّ أَمَةً لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ زَنَتْ فَأَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ أُقِيمَ عَلَيْهَا الْحَدَّ فَأَتَيْتُهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِنِفَاسٍ فَخَشِيتُ إِنِ انَا جَلَدْتُهَا أَنْ تَمُوتَ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَقِيمُوا الْحُدُودَ عَلَى أَرِقَّائِكُمْ مَنْ أُحْصِنَ مِنْهُمْ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُحْصِنْ فَإِنَّ أَمَةً لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ زَنَتْ فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَجْلِدَهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ حَدِيثَةُ عَهْدٍ بِالنِّفَاسِ فَخَشِيتُ إِنْ أَنَا جَلَدْتُهَا أَنْ تَمُوتَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ قَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يُونُسَ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْمُقَدَّمِيِّ فَخَشِيتُ إِنْ أَنَا جَلَدْتُهَا أَنْ أَقْتُلَهَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ  

[Machine] "O people, establish the limits (prescribed by Allah) upon your private parts. Those among you who are married, maintain chastity, and those who are not married, abstain (from illicit relations). If an unmarried slave woman commits fornication, she is ordered by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to be lashed. I approached her but found out that she was menstruating, and I feared that if I were to lash her, she might die. So, I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. He said, 'You have done well.'"  

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَقِيمُوا الْحُدُودَ عَلَى أَرِقَّائِكُمْ مَنْ أُحْصِنَ مِنْهُمْ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُحْصَنْ فَإِنَّ أَمَةً لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ زَنَتْ فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَجْلِدَهَا فَأَتَيْتُهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِالنُّفَاسِ فَخَشِيتُ إِنْ أَنَا جَلَدْتُهَا أَنْ تَمُوتَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ  

"عَنْ أَبِى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِى قَالَ: خَطَبَ عَلِىّ فَقَالَ. أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَقِيمُوا عَلَى أَرِقَّائِكُمْ الحُدُودَ مَنْ أُحْصِنَ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُحْصنْ، فَإِنَّ أَمَةَ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ زَنَتْ فَأمَرَنِى رَسُولُ الله ﷺ أنْ أُقيمَ عَلَيْهَا الحَدَّ، فَأتَيْتُها فَإِذَا هِىَ حَدِيثُ عَهْدِ بِنِفَاسٍ فَخَشِيتُ إِنْ أَنَا جَلَدْتُهَا أَنْ تَمُوتَ، فَأتَيْتُ رَسُول الله ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ لَهُ فَقالَ أحْسنْتَ".
