"Should I return to my people, for he did not leave any dwelling house of his own and maintenance for me? She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: Yes. She said: I came out, and when I was in the apartment or in the mosque, he called for me, or he commanded (someone to call me) and, therefore, I was called. He said: what did you say? So I repeated my story which I had already mentioned about my husband. Thereupon he said: Stay in your house till the term lapses. She said: So I passed my waiting period in it (her house) for four months and ten days. When Uthman ibn Affan became caliph, he sent for me and asked me about that; so I informed him, and he followed it and decided cases accordingly.  

أَنَّهَا جَاءَتْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَسْأَلُهُ أَنْ تَرْجِعَ إِلَى أَهْلِهَا فِي بَنِي خُدْرَةَ فَإِنَّ زَوْجَهَا خَرَجَ فِي طَلَبِ أَعْبُدٍ لَهُ أَبَقُوا حَتَّى إِذَا كَانُوا بِطَرَفِ الْقَدُّومِ لَحِقَهُمْ فَقَتَلُوهُ فَسَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَرْجِعَ إِلَى أَهْلِي فَإِنِّي لَمْ يَتْرُكْنِي فِي مَسْكَنٍ يَمْلِكُهُ وَلاَ نَفَقَةٍ قَالَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَعَمْ قَالَتْ فَخَرَجْتُ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُ فِي الْحُجْرَةِ أَوْ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ دَعَانِي أَوْ أَمَرَ بِي فَدُعِيتُ لَهُ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ قُلْتِ فَرَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ الْقِصَّةَ الَّتِي ذَكَرْتُ مِنْ شَأْنِ زَوْجِي قَالَتْ فَقَالَ امْكُثِي فِي بَيْتِكِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتَابُ أَجَلَهُ قَالَتْ فَاعْتَدَدْتُ فِيهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَىَّ فَسَأَلَنِي عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَاتَّبَعَهُ وَقَضَى بِهِ  

Al-Furay'ah bint Malik bin Sinan - the sister of the Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri - informed her that she went to the Messenger of Allah to ask him if she could return to her family in Banu Khudrah. Her husband had gone out searching for his runaway slaves, and when he was in Turaf Al-Qadum he caught up with them and they killed him. She said: "So I asked the Messenger of Allah if I could return to my family since my husband had not left me a home that he owned nor any maintenance." She said: "So the Messenger of Allah said: 'Yes.' Then I left. When I was in the courtyard," or, "in the Masjid, the Messenger of Allah called me" or, "summoned for me to come back t him and he said: 'What did you say?'" She said: "So I repeated the store that I had mentioned to him about the case of my husband. He said: 'Stay in your house until what is written reaches its term.'" She said: "So I observed my Iddah there for four months and ten (days)." She said: "During the time of Uthman, he sent a message to me asking me about that, so I informed him. He followed it and judged accordingly."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Said ibn Ishaq ibn Kab ibn Ujra from his paternal aunt, Zaynab bint Kab ibn Ujra that al-Furaya bint Malik ibn Sinan, the sister of Abu Said al-Khudri, informed her that she went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked to be able to return to her people among the Banu Khudra since her husband had gone out in search of some of his slaves who had run away and he had caught up with them near al-Qudum, (which is 6 miles from Madina), and they had killed him. She said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if I could return to my people in the Banu Khudra, as my husband had not left me in a dwelling which belonged to him, and had left me no maintenance. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,'Yes.' So I left. When I was in the courtyard, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me or summoned me, and I answered him. He said, 'What did you say?' I repeated the story about my husband. He said, 'Stay in your house until what is written reaches its term.' I did the idda in the house for four months and ten days." She added, "When Uthman ibn Affan sent for me, I told him that, and he followed it and made decisions by it."

" عَنْ فُريْعَةَ أَنَّ زَوْجَهَا خَرَجَ فِي طَلَبِ أَعْلَاجٍ أُبَّاقٍ (*)، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بَطَرفِ الْقَدومِ، وَهُوَ جَبَلٌ أَدْرَكَهُمْ فَقَتَلُوُه، قَاَلتْ: فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرَتْ لَهُ أَنَّ زَوْجَهَا قُتِلَ، وَأَنَّهُ تَركَهَا فِي مَسْكَنٍ لَيْسَ لَهُ، وَاسْتَأذَنَتْهُ فِي الإنْتِقَال، فَأَذِنَ لَهَا، فَانْطَلَقَتْ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بِبَابِ الْحُجْرَةِ أَمَرَ بِهَا فَرُدَّتْ، وَأَمَرَهَا أَنْ تُعيِدَ عَلَيْه حَدِيثَهَا، فَفَعَلَتْ، فَأَمَرَهَا أَلا تَخْرُجَ حَتَى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتَابُ أَجَلَهُ، وَفِي لَفْظٍ: فَقَالَ: امْكُثِي فِي بَيْتِكِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتَابُ أَجَلَهُ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا، قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا كَانَ زَمَنُ عُثْمَانَ أَتَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ تَسْألُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ. افْعَلِي، ثُمَّ قَاَلَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ: هَلْ مَضى مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَوْ مِنْ صَاحِبَيَّ فِي مِثْلِ هذَاَ شَيءٌ؟ قَالَتْ: فُرَيْعَةُ، فَذُكِرْتُ لَهُ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ فَسَأَلَنِي فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ، فَانْتَهَى إِلىَ قَوْلِي، وَأَمَرَ الْمَرأَةَ أَلا تَخْرُجَ مِنْ بَيْتِ زَوْجِهَا حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتَابُ أَجَلَهُ".
