When ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf married an Ansari woman, the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "How much Mahr did you give her?" ʿAbdur-Rahman said, "Gold equal to the weight of a date stone." Anas added: When they (i.e. the Prophet ﷺ and his companions) arrived at Medina, the emigrants stayed at the Ansar's houses. ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf stayed at Saʿd bin Ar-Rabi's house. Saʿd said to ʿAbdur- Rahman, "I will divide and share my property with you and will give one of my two wives to you." ʿAbdur-Rahman said, "May Allah bless you, your wives and property (I am not in need of that; but kindly show me the way to the market)." So ʿAbdur-Rahman went to the market and traded there gaining a profit of some dried yoghurt and butter, and married (an Ansari woman). The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Give a banquet, even if with one sheep."

When ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf came to Medina, the Prophet ﷺ established a bond of brotherhood between him and Saʿd bin Ar-Rabi al-Ansari. Saʿd was a rich man, so he said to ʿAbdur-Rahman, "I will give you half of my property and will help you marry." ʿAbdur-Rahman said (to him), "May Allah bless you in your family and property. Show me the market." So ʿAbdur-Rahman did not return from the market) till he gained some dried buttermilk (yogurt) and butter (through trading). He brought that to his house-hold. We stayed for sometime (or as long as Allah wished), and then ʿAbdur-Rahman came, scented with yellowish perfume. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him) "What is this?" He replied, "I got married to an Ansari woman." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What did you pay her?" He replied, "A gold stone or gold equal to the weight of a date stone." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Give a wedding banquet even if with one sheep."

: "When 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf arrived in Al-Madinah, the Messenger of Allah established a bond of brotherhood between him and sa'd bin Ar-Rabi. So he said to him: "Come here, I will divide my wealth and give you half, and I have two wives, I will divorce one of them, and when she completes her waiting period you may marry her." He said: " May Allah bless you in your family and your wealth. Show me where the market is." So they showed him where the market was and he did not return that day except with some cottage cheese and cooking fat which he had earned as a profit. The Messenger of Allah saw him after that, and he had traces of yellow on him. So he said to him: "What is this?" He said: "I married a woman from the Ansar." He said : " What dowry did you give her?" He said: " A date-stone(of gold) - ( one of the narrators) Humaid said: "Or he said: - gold equal to the weight of a date-stone." [Machine] I heard Anas ibn Malik say that Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf came to Medina and the Prophet ﷺ arranged a brotherhood between him and Sa'd ibn Ar-Rabi' Al-Ansari. Sa'd offered to divide his wealth and family with Abdur-Rahman, who replied, "May Allah bless you in your family and wealth. Show me the market." Abdur-Rahman went to the market and made a profit by selling some fat. The Prophet ﷺ saw him after a few days with a yellowish complexion, so he asked him, "What's wrong, Abdur-Rahman?" He replied, "I married a woman from the Ansar." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What did you give her as a dowry?" Abdur-Rahman said, "A piece of gold weighing a date seed." The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah bless your marriage. Offer a wedding feast, even if it is with a sheep."

When ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf came to Medina and the Prophet ﷺ established the bond of brotherhood between him and Saʿd bin Ar-Rabi-al-Ansari, Saud suggested that ʿAbdur-Rahman should accept half of his property and family. ʿAbdur Rahman said, "May Allah bless you in your family and property; guide me to the market." So ʿAbdur-Rahman (while doing business in the market) made some profit of some condensed dry yoghurt and butter. After a few days the Prophet ﷺ saw him wearing clothes stained with yellow perfume. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is this, O ʿAbdur-Rahman?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have married an Ansar' woman." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What have you given her as Mahr?" He (i.e. ʿAbdur-Rahman) said, "A piece of gold, about the weight of a date stone." Then the Prophet said, Give a banquet, even though of a sheep." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3937)
