Ibn Masud on certain Surahs being among the earliest and dearest to him

bukhari:4994Ādam > Shuʿbah > Abū Isḥāq > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Yazīd > Ibn Masʿūd

I heard Ibn Masud ᴿᴬ say regarding Surahs Bani Israil, al-Kahf, Maryam, Ta-Ha, and Anbiya: “Indeed, they are among the earliest, ancient ones, and they are part of what I have learned of old.”

Surahs Bani Israil, al-Kahf, Maryam, Ta-Ha and Anbiya are among the ancient, earliest ones, and they are among my first treasures.

[AI] Qatadah said: “{Juthādhan}” means: he cut them up. Al-Hasan said: “{In a falak}” means: like the whorl of a spindle; “{they swim}” means: they revolve.

Ibn Abbas said: “{Nafashat}” means: it grazed; “{Yus’habūn}” means: they are prevented; “{Your community is one community}” means: your religion is one.

Ikrimah said: “{Hasab}” means: firewood, in Abyssinian.

Another said: “{Ahassū}” means: they anticipated it, from “I sensed”; “{Khāmidīn}” means: lifeless, like a harvested crop cut down to the roots; it can apply to one, two, or all. “{They do not grow weary}” means: they do not tire; from it is “hasīr,” and “I exhausted my camel,” meaning: deep, far. “{Nukisū}” means: they were turned back. “{The making of protective clothing}” means: coats of mail. “{They cut up their affair among themselves}” means: they differed. “Al-hasīs,” “al-hiss,” “al-jars,” and “al-hams” are one and the same: a faint sound. “{We informed you}” means: we made you know. “{I informed you}”: if you have informed him, then you and he are on equal footing—you have not acted treacherously.

Mujahid said: “{So that you may be asked}” means: you will understand; “{He approved}” means: he was pleased; “{The statues}” means: idols; “as-sijill” means: the scroll (sheet).

I heard Ibn Masud ᴿᴬ say regarding Surahs Bani Israil, al-Kahf, and Maryam: “Indeed, they are among the earliest, ancient ones, and they are part of what I have learned of old.”

Ibn ʿAbbās said regarding “so they will shake”: they will nod. And others said: “your tooth naghaḍat,” meaning it moved.
