Affirming reliance upon Allah during distress and fear

bukhari:4563 – Aḥmad b. Yūnus > Abū Bakr > Abū Ḥuṣayn > Abū al-Ḍuḥā > Ibn ʿAbbās

"Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs." Ibrahim said it when he was cast into the fire, and Muhammad ﷺ said it when they said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it increased them in faith, and they said, "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs."

البخاري:٤٥٦٣ – حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ أُرَاهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ

﴿حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ﴾، قَالَهَا إِبْرَاهِيم ؑ حِينَ أُلْقِيَ فِي النَّارِ، وَقَالَهَا مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ حِينَ قَالُوا ﴿إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا، وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ﴾.

quran:3:173 –

Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it ˹merely˺ increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and ˹He is˺ the best Disposer of affairs."

Those to whom (alladhīna, substitutes for the previous alladhīna, ‘those who’, or an adjectival qualification ˹of it˺) people, that is, Nu‘aym b. Mas‘ūd al-Ashja‘ī, said, ‘The people, Abū Sufyān and his companions, have gathered, their multitudes, against you, in order to exterminate you, therefore fear them’, and do not go out to ˹encounter˺ them; but that, saying, increased them in faith, in their belief in God and in certainty, and they said, ‘God is sufficient for us, He will deal fully for us with their affair; an excellent Guardian is He’ , the One to whom the matter is entrusted. They thus set out with the Prophet (s) and arrived at the market-fair of Badr, but God had cast terror into the hearts of Abū Sufyān and his followers and so they did not turn up. They ˹the believers˺ had merchandise with them, and so they traded and made profits. God, exalted be He, says:

القرآن:٣:١٧٣ –

الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

{الذين} بدل من الذين قبله أو نعت {قال لهم الناس} أي نعيم بن مسعود الأشجعي {إن الناس} أبا سفيان وأصحابه {قد جمعوا لكم} الجموع ليستأصلوكم {فاخشوهم} ولا تأتوهم {فزادهم} ذلك القول {إيمانا} تصديقا بالله ويقينا {وقالوا حسبنا الله} كافينا أمرهم {ونعم الوكيل} المفوَّض إليه الأمر هو، وخرجوا مع النبي ﷺ فوافوا سوق بدر وألقى الله الرعب في قلب أبي سفيان وأصحابه فلم يأتوا وكان معهم تجارات فباعوا وربحوا قال الله تعالى.

The last statement of Abraham when he was thrown into the fire was:--"Allah is Sufficient for us and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs for us)." (3.173) (Using translation from Bukhārī 4564)

الحاكم:٣١٦٧ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي دَارِمٍ الْحَافِظُ بِالْكُوفَةِ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التَّمِيمِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنْ أَبِي حُصَيْنٍ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

كَانَ آخِرُ كَلَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حِينَ أُلْقِيَ فِي النَّارِ حَسْبِي اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ وَقَالَ نَبِيُّكُمْ ﷺ مِثْلُهَا {الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا} [آل عمران 173] اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجَاهُ» على شرط البخاري ومسلم

[Machine] The last words of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ when he was thrown into the fire were "HasbunAllah wa ni'mal wakil" (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs). Your Prophet ﷺ said an example similar to it when the people said to them, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs." (Quran 3:173)

الكبرى للنسائي:١٠٣٦٤ – أَخْبَرَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنْ أَبِي حُصَيْنٍ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

كَانَ آخِرَ كَلَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ حِينَ أُلْقِيَ فِي النَّارِ «حَسْبِيَ اللهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ» قَالَ وَقَالَ نَبِيُّكُمْ ﷺ مَثَلَهَا {الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا} [آل عمران 173] اللهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

And your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said the same words to his people when they said to him, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But that merely increased them in faith and they said, "Allah alone is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs." [Surah Al-Imran 3:173]
