While I was standing amongst the people who were invoking Allah for ʿUmar bin Al-Khattab who was lying (dead) on his bed, a man behind me rested his elbows on my shoulder and said, "(O ʿUmar!) May Allah bestow His Mercy on you. I always hoped that Allah will keep you with your two companions, for I often heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "I, Abu Bakr and ʿUmar were (somewhere). I, Abu Bakr and ʿUmar did (something). I, Abu Bakr and ʿUmar set out.' So I hoped that Allah will keep you with both of them." I turned back to see that the speaker was ʿAli bin Abi Talib.  

البخاري:٣٦٧٧ – حَدَّثَنِي الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحُسَيْنِ الْمَكِّيُّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ إِنِّي لَوَاقِفٌ فِي قَوْمٍ فَدَعَوُا اللَّهَ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ وَقَدْ وُضِعَ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ إِذَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَلْفِي قَدْ وَضَعَ مِرْفَقَهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبِي يَقُولُ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ إِنْ كُنْتُ لأَرْجُو

أَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ اللَّهُ مَعَ صَاحِبَيْكَ لأَنِّي كَثِيرًا مِمَّا كُنْتُ أَسْمَعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ كُنْتُ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَفَعَلْتُ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَانْطَلَقْتُ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ فَإِنْ كُنْتُ لأَرْجُو أَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ اللَّهُ مَعَهُمَا فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا هُوَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

When ʿUmar bin al Khattab ؓ was placed on his bier, the people gathered around him, praying and invoking blessings upon him before [the bier] was lifted up, and I was among them. No one alarmed me except a man who seized me by the shoulder from behind. I turned and saw that it was ‘Ali bin Abi Talib ؓ . He prayed for mercy for ‘Umar ؓ , then he said: You have not left behind anyone more dear to me, with the like of whose deeds I would hope to meet Allah, than you. By Allah, I think that Allah will most certainly join you to your two companions, and that is because I often heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, ʿAbu Bakr, ʿUmar and I went; Abu Bakr, ʿUmar and I came in; Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and I went out.” So I think that Allah will most certainly join you to them.  

أحمد:٨٩٨ – حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي حُسَيْنٍ عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ وُضِعَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ فَتَكَنَّفَهُ النَّاسُ يَدْعُونَ وَيُصَلُّونَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ فَلَمْ يَرُعْنِي إِلا رَجُلٌ قَدْ أَخَذَ بِمَنْكِبِي مِنْ وَرَائِي فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا هُوَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَتَرَحَّمَ عَلَى عُمَرَ فَقَالَ مَا خَلَّفْتَ أَحَدًا أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ

أَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى مَعَ صَاحِبَيْكَ وَذَلِكَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَنْ أَسْمَعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «ذَهَبْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَدَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ» وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ اللَّهُ مَعَهُمَا  

«هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» على شرط البخاري ومسلم
