6. Menstruation

The statement of Allah Most High "And they ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.'"

وَقَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى {وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْمَحِيضِ قُلْ هُوَ أَذًى} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَيُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ}

He said 'What is the matter with you? Have you got your menses?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'This is a thing which Allah has ordained for the daughters of Adam. So do what all the pilgrims do with the exception of the Tawaf (Circumambulation) round the Kaʿba." ʿAisha added, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed cows on behalf of his wives."

A person asked me, "Can a woman in menses serve me? And can a Junub woman come close to me?" I replied, "All this is easy for me. All of them can serve me, and there is no harm for any other person to do the same. ʿAisha told me that she used to comb the hair of Messenger of Allah ﷺ while she was in her menses, and he was in Iʿtikaf (in the mosque). Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) of ʿId-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion."

[Machine] "And Ibrahim said, 'It is fine for you to recite the verse.' Ibn Abbas did not consider reciting while in a state of janabah (ritual impurity) as problematic. The Prophet ﷺ used to remember Allah at all times. Um Atiyyah said, 'We were instructed to leave menstruation and then proclaim the takbir and supplicate.' Ibn Abbas said, 'Abu Sufyan informed me that Heraclius sent for the book of the Prophet ﷺ and read in it, 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful', and 'O People of the Book, come to a word.' The verse. Ata reported from Jabir that Aisha was in a state of menstruation, so she refrained from performing all rituals except circumambulation around the Kaaba. Hakam said, 'I slaughter animals while in a state of janabah.' And Allah said, 'Do not eat from that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned.'"

We were forbidden to mourn for a dead person for more than three days except in the case of a husband for whom mourning was allowed for four months and ten days. (During that time) we were not allowed to put kohl (Antimony eye power) in our eyes or to use perfumes or to put on colored clothes except a dress made of ʿAsr (a kind of Yemen cloth, very coarse and rough). We were allowed very light perfumes at the time of taking a bath after menses and also we were forbidden to go with the funeral procession .

In the last Hajj of Messenger of Allah ﷺ I assumed the Ihram for Hajj along with Allah Apostle. I was one of those who intended Tamattuʿ (to perform Hajj and ʿUmra) and did not take the Hadi (animal for sacrifice) with me. I got my menses and was not clean till the night of ʿArafa I said, "O Allah's Apostle! It is the night of the day of ʿArafat and I intended to perform the Hajj Tamattuʿ with ʿUmra. Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me to undo my hair and comb it and to postpone the ʿUmra. I did the same and completed the Hajj. On the night of Al-Hasba (i.e. place outside Mecca where the pilgrims go after finishing all the ceremonies of Hajj at Mina) he (the Prophet) ordered ʿAbdur Rahman (ʿAisha's brother) to take me to at-Tanʿim to assume the lhram for ʿUmra in lieu of that of Hajj-at-Tamattuʿ which I had intended to perform.

On the 1st of Dhul-Hijja we set out with the intention of performing Hajj. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Any one who likes to assume the Ihram for ʿUmra he can do so. Had I not brought the Hadi with me, I would have assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra. "Some of us assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra while the others assumed the Ihram for Hajj. I was one of those who assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra. I got menses and kept on menstruating until the day of ʿArafat and complained of that to the Prophet. He told me to postpone my ʿUmra, undo and comb my hair, and to assume the Ihram of Hajj and I did so. On the night of Hasba, he sent my brother ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakr with me to at-Tanʿim, where I assumed the Ihram for ʿUmra in lieu of the previous one. Hisham said, "For that (ʿUmra) no Hadi, fasting or alms were required.

Aisha would say: ‘Do not rush until you see the white discharge, seeking purification from menstruation.’ And the daughter of Zaid ibn Thabit reported that women used to call for lamps in the depth of the night and look for purification. So she said, ‘The women used to do this?’ and she criticized them."

6.25 If a woman gets menses thrice a month

[Machine] The translation of the given text is as follows:

According to the saying of Allah the Exalted: "It is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs." It is mentioned about Ali and Shurayh that if a woman comes with clear evidence from her family lineage and her religion is accepted, it is confirmed that she menstruated three times in a month. She is believed. Ata said, read it as "what it was," and Ibrahim also said the same. Ata said, menstruation lasts from one day to fifteen. Mu'tamir said, I asked my father about a woman who sees blood after five days of her menstrual period, Ibn Sirin replied, women know better about that.

Fatima bint Abi Hubaish asked the Prophet, "I got persistent bleeding (in between the periods) and do not become clean. Shall I give up prayers?" He replied, "No, this is from a blood vessel. Give up the prayers only for the days on which you usually get the menses and then take a bath and offer your prayers."

A woman is allowed to leave (go back home) if she gets menses (after Tawaf-Al-Ifada). Ibn ʿUmar formerly used to say that she should not leave but later on I heard him saying, "She may leave, since Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave them the permission to leave (after Tawaf-Al-Ifada)."
