[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O son of Adam, if you give in charity, it is better for you, and if you withhold it, it is evil for you. Do not blame anyone for a modest provision, and start with those who are under your care. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." This is the saying of Muhammad ibn Bashshar, and in the narration of Al-Jahdamy it is attributed to Shaddad Abu Ammar, and the rest are equal.  

البيهقي:٧٧٨١ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي قَالَا ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نُعَيْمٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ قَالَا ثنا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو صَالِحِ ابْنُ بِنْتِ يَحْيَى بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ الْقَاضِي ثنا جَدِّي يَحْيَى بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ الْحَنَفِيُّ ثنا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ثنا شَدَّادُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ يَقُولُ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَبْذُلِ الْفَضْلَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ وَإِنْ تُمْسِكْهُ شَرٌّ لَكَ وَلَا تُلَامُ عَلَى كَفَافٍ وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بَشَّارٍ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ الْجَهْضَمِيِّ شَدَّادٌ أَبُو عَمَّارٍ وَالْبَاقِي سَوَاءٌ

Being able to give charity is better than receiving it

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ˹Allah says:˺ O son of Adam, it is better for you if you spend your surplus ˹in charity˺, but if you withhold it, it is evil for you. There is, however. no reproach for you ˹if you withhold means necessary˺ for a living. Begin ˹giving charity˺ with your dependents. and the upper hand is better than the lower hand.  

مسلم:١٠٣٦ – حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَعَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا شَدَّادٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ! إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَبْذُلَ الْفَضْلَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ، وَأَنْ تُمْسِكَهُ شَرٌّ لَكَ، وَلاَ تُلاَمُ عَلَى كَفَافٍ، وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ، وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى.»

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ˹That Allah said:˺ O son of Adam! If you give your surplus it is better for you, and if you keep it, it is worse for you, but there is no harm with what is sufficient. And begin ˹the giving˺ with your dependents. And the upper hand (i.e. giving) is better than the lower hand (i.e. receiving).
