Write" In the name of Allah, most Gracious and most Merciful." Suhail said: As for" Bismillah," we do not know what is meant by" Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim" (In the name of Allah most Gracious and most Merciful). But write what we understand, i. e. Bi ismika allahumma (in thy name. O Allah). Then, the Prophet ﷺ said: Write:" From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah." They said: If we knew that thou welt the Messenger of Allah, we would follow you. Therefore, write your name and the name of your father. So the Prophet ﷺ said: Write" From Muhammad b. 'Abdullah." They laid the condition on the Prophet ﷺ that anyone who joined them from the Muslims, the Meccans would not return him, and anyone who joined you (the Muslims) from them, you would send him back to them. The Companions said: Messenger of Allah, should we write this? He said: Yes. One who goes away from us to join them-may Allah keep him away! and one who comes to join us from them (and is sent back) Allah will provide him relief and a way of escape.  

أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا صَالَحُوا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِيهِمْ سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِعَلِيٍّ اكْتُبْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ قَالَ سُهَيْلٌ أَمَّا بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ فَمَا نَدْرِي مَا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَلَكِنِ اكْتُبْ مَا نَعْرِفُ بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالُوا لَوْ عَلِمْنَا أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لاَتَّبَعْنَاكَ وَلَكِنِ اكْتُبِ اسْمَكَ وَاسْمَ أَبِيكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اكْتُبْ مِنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَاشْتَرَطُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ مَنْ جَاءَ مِنْكُمْ لَمْ نَرُدَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَمَنْ جَاءَكُمْ مِنَّا رَدَدْتُمُوهُ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَكْتُبُ هَذَا قَالَ نَعَمْ إِنَّهُ مَنْ ذَهَبَ مِنَّا إِلَيْهِمْ فَأَبْعَدَهُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ جَاءَنَا مِنْهُمْ سَيَجْعَلُ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَرَجًا وَمَخْرَجًا  

Write" In the name of Allah, most Gracious and most Merciful." أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا صَالَحُوا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِيهِمْ سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِعَلِيٍّ اكْتُبْ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فَقَالَ سُهَيْلٌ أَمَّا بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فَلَا نَدْرِي مَا بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَلَكِنْ اكْتُبْ مَا نَعْرِفُ بِاسْمِكَ اللهُمَّ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولِ اللهِ قَالَ لَوْ عَلِمْنَا أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ لَاتَّبَعْنَاكَ وَلَكِنْ اكْتُبْ اسْمَكَ وَاسْمَ أَبِيكَ قَالَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اكْتُبْ مِنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ وَاشْتَرَطُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ مَنْ جَاءَ مِنْكُمْ لَمْ نَرُدَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَمَنْ جَاءَ مِنَّا رَدَدْتُمُوهُ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَتَكْتُبُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ إِنَّهُ مَنْ ذَهَبَ مِنَّا إِلَيْهِمْ فَأَبْعَدَهُ اللهُ  

[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made peace with the Quraysh on the day of Hudaybiyah, he said to Ali, 'Write in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' So Suhayl ibn Amr said, 'We do not know the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Write in your name, O Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali, 'Write, "This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has agreed upon."' Suhayl ibn Amr said, 'If we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have followed you or denied you. Write your lineage from your father.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali, 'Write, Muhammad ibn Abdullah.' Whoever comes from your side, we will send them back to you, and whoever comes from us, we will leave them with you.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, shall we give this to them?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever comes to them from us, may Allah distance him, and whoever comes to us from them, we will send him back. Allah will create a way out for him.'"  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَمَّا صَالَحَ قُرَيْشًا يَوْمَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ «اكْتُبْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ» فَقَالَ سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو لَا نَعْرِفُ الرَّحْمَنَ الرَّحِيمَ اكْتُبْ بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ فَقَالَ ﷺ لِعَلِيٍّ «اكْتُبْ هَذَا مَا صَالَحَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو لَوْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَاتَّبَعْنَاكَ وَلَمْ نُكَذِّبْكَ اكْتُبْ بِنَسَبِكَ مِنْ أَبِيكِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِعَلِيٍّ « اكْتُبْ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ» فَكَتَبَ مَنْ أَتَى مِنْكُمْ رَدَدْنَاهُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَمَنْ أَتَى مِنَّا تَرَكْنَاهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نُعْطِيهِمْ هَذَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ أَتَاهُمْ مِنَّا فَأَبْعَدَهُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ أَتَانَا مِنْهُمْ فَرَدَدْنَاهُ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَرَجًا وَمَخْرَجًا»  

"عَنْ أنَسٍ: أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا صَالَحُوا النَّبِىَّ ﷺ مِنْهُم سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرو فَقَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ لِعَلِىٍّ: اكْتُبْ بِسْم الله الرحْمن الرَّحيم، فَكَتَبَ، سُهَيْل: أمَّا بِسْم الله الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيم فَمَا نَدْرِى مَا بِسْمِ الله الرَّحمنِ الرَّحيم، وَلَكِنِ اكْتُبْ بِمَا نَعْرِفُ: بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ، فَقَالَ: اكْتُبْ مِنْ مُحَمَّد رسُول الله، قَالُوا: لَوْ عَلِمْنَا أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ الله اتبعْنَاكَ، وَلَكِنِ اكتُبْ اسْمَكَ وَاسْمَ أَبيكَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ: اكْتُبْ مِنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الله، فَاشْتَرَطُوا عَلَى النَّبِىِّ ﷺ أَنَّ مَنْ جَاءَ مِنْكُمْ لَمْ نَرُدَّهُ عَلَيكُمْ، وَمَنْ جَاءَ مِنَّا رَدَدْتُمُوهُ عَلَيْنَا، فَقَالُوا يَا رسُولَ الله: أَتَكْتُبُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، إِنَّهُ مَنْ ذَهَبَ مِنَّا إِلَيْهِم فَأبعَدَه الله، وَمَنْ جَاءَنَا منْهُمْ سَيَجْعَل الله لَهُم فَرَجًا وَمَخْرَجًا".
