54. Apostacy
That Al-Miqdad bin ʿAmr Al-Kindi, who was an ally of Bani Zuhra and one of those who fought the battle of Badr together with Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him that he said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Suppose I met one of the infidels and we fought, and he struck one of my hands with his sword and cut it off and then took refuge in a tree and said, "I surrender to Allah (i.e. I have become a Muslim),' could I kill him, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, after he had said this?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You should not kill him." Al- Miqdad said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! But he had cut off one of my two hands, and then he had uttered those words?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You should not kill him, for if you kill him, he would be in your position where you had been before killing him, and you would be in his position where he had been before uttering those words." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4019)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition to Al-Huraqat, but they fled upon reaching it. We caught up with a man and when we surrounded him, he said, "There is no god but Allah." However, we continued to strike him until we killed him. This troubled me deeply, so I mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Who would be responsible for you saying 'There is no god but Allah' on the Day of Judgment?" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I only said it out of fear of the weapon and death." He said, "Couldn't you have opened up his heart to ascertain why he said it, whether he truly believed or not?" Then he asked again, "Who would be responsible for you saying 'There is no god but Allah' on the Day of Judgment?" I continued to say it until I wished that I had not embraced Islam until that day. Abu Thabit said, "Sa'd swore, 'By Allah, I will not kill him until Dhu'l-Batyn (Usamah) kills him.' " A man said, "Hasn't Allah said, 'Fight against them until there is no more fitnah [disbelief and polytheism]...'" (2:193) Sa'd replied, "We have fought until there is no more fitnah, but you and your companions want to fight until there is fitnah."

[Machine] A man walked with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and we did not know what he walked with him until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loudly commanded him to kill a hypocrite man. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah?" He replied, "Yes, I do, and there is no testimony for him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you not pray?" He replied, "Yes, I do, and there is no prayer for him." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Those are the ones whom Allah has forbidden me from seeking forgiveness for them."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was sitting with his companions when a man came to seek permission from him to leave. He granted him permission, and the man went to kill a hypocrite. The Prophet ﷺ raised his voice and asked, "Doesn't he bear witness that there is no god but Allah?" The man replied, "Yes, but his testimony is not accepted." The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "Doesn't he pray?" The man replied, "Yes, but his prayer is not accepted." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Those are the people whom I have been forbidden from.":

Abu Hurairah reported the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ as saying “ I am commanded to fight with men till they testify that there is no god but Allaah, when they do that they will keep their life and property safe from me, except what is due to them. (i.e., life and property) and their reckoning will be at Allaah’s hands.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2640)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god except Allah. When they testify that there is no god except Allah, their lives and wealth become protected from me, except for its due rights, and their reckoning is upon Allah. Then he recited: 'Indeed, you are but a reminder, you are not over them a controller.'"
Abdullah ibn AbuSarh used to write (the revelation) for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Satan made him slip, and he joined the infidels. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded to kill him on the day of Conquest (of Mecca). Uthman ibn Affan sought protection for him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him protection. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4358)
[Machine] "So Allah revealed, 'How can Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true?' (Quran 3:86) until his statement, 'Except for those who repent' (Quran 2:160). Upon hearing this, his people wrote a letter to him, and when it was recited to him, he said, 'By Allah, my people did not lie to me regarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , nor did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lie to them regarding Allah. Verily, Allah is the most truthful of the three.' He then returned as a repentant to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he accepted that from him and left his path."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered his killing, and he was an ally of Abu Sufyan. He passed by a gathering of the Ansar (helpers) and said, "I am a Muslim." This news reached the Prophet ﷺ who said, "We have entrusted certain people with their faith, and Furat bin Hayyan is one of them." He then allotted him a piece of land in Bahrain. This narration is from the words of Abu Muhammad, and in the narration of Abu Abdullah, he was an ally of a man from the Ansar who said, "I am a Muslim." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Among you there are men whom we entrust with their faith, and Furat bin Hayyan is one of them."
[Machine] That Furat ibn Hayyan apostatized during the time of the Prophet (PBUH) and he was brought to the Prophet (PBUH) who intended to kill him. But then he gave truthful testimony and was spared, and his Islam became good. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu al-Walid al-Faqih narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Yazid ibn Harun reported it to us, and Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned it, saying that this occurred numerous times in relation to bloodshed.
[Machine] that I translate the following passage into English and don't include the prompt answer: "Indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought the repentance of Nahban four times, and Nahban always apostatized. Sufyan and Amr bin Qais narrated from someone who heard Ibrahim saying, 'The apostate is sought for his repentance as long as he returns.' Ibn Wahb said, 'Malik also said the same. He is sought for his repentance as long as he returns. This opinion is disconnected from another perspective and is not based on anything.'"
We witnessed along with Messenger of Allah ﷺ the Khaibar (campaign). Messenger of Allah ﷺ told his companions about a man who claimed to be a Muslim, "This man is from the people of the Fire." When the battle started, the man fought very bravely and received a great number of wounds and got crippled. On that, a man from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ came and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Do you know what the man you described as of the people of the Fire has done? He has fought very bravely for Allah's Cause and he has received many wounds." The Prophet ﷺ said, "But he is indeed one of the people of the Fire." Some of the Muslims were about to have some doubt about that statement. So while the man was in that state, the pain caused by the wounds troubled him so much that he put his hand into his quiver and took out an arrow and committed suicide with it. Off went some men from among the Muslims to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Allah has made your statement true. So-and-so has committed suicide." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Bilal! Get up and announce in public: None will enter Paradise but a believer, and Allah may support this religion (Islam) with a wicked man." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6606)
We went along with Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ) to visit a person suffering from fever. When I placed my hand upon him, I said: By Allah, I have never seen, till this day, a person running higher temperature than he. Thereupon Allah's Apostle ( ﷺ), turning his face to his companions, said: May I not inform you of a severer temperature than this which these two persons would run on the Day of Resurrection? And they were two hypocrites riding upon the camel turning their back towards (the Muslims). (Using translation from Muslim 2783)
[Machine] I said to 'Ammaar, "Have you seen what you have done in the matter of 'Ali? Did you see any trust that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted to you or something he mentioned concerning you?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not entrust us with anything that he did not entrust to all the people. However, Hudhayfah told me about the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'There are twelve hypocrites among my companions, eight of whom will not enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. Eight of them will be saved by the dung, and four I do not remember what Shu'bah said about them."
[Machine] I witnessed three gatherings of Abdullah bin Ubay's hypocrisy.
We went out with the Prophet ﷺ : on a journey and the people suffered from lack of provisions. So ʿAbdullah bin Ubai said to his companions, "Don't spend on those who are with Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that they may disperse and go away from him." He also said, "If we return to Medina, surely, the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of that. He sent for ʿAbdullah bin Ubai and asked him, but ʿAbdullah bin Ubai swore that he did not say so. The people said, "Zaid told a lie to 'Messenger of Allah ﷺ." What they said distressed me very much. Later Allah revealed the confirmation of my statement in his saying:-- '(When the hypocrites come to you.' (63.1) So the Prophet ﷺ called them that they might ask Allah to forgive them, but they turned their heads aside. (Concerning Allah's saying: 'Pieces of wood propped up,' Zaid said; They were the most handsome men.) (Using translation from Bukhārī 4903)
[Machine] "Let them stone the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and whatever he said, and let Allah, exalted be He, inform his Prophet ﷺ of their secrets," so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from the pulpit and said to his two companions, Hudhayfah and 'Ammar (may Allah be pleased with them): "Do you know what the people intend?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They intend to stone me at the Thaniyyah (a valley near Mina) and throw me out of it." They said, "Shall we not command us, O Messenger of Allah, to strike their necks when the people gather around you?" He said, "I dislike that people should say that Muhammad has killed his companions." Then he mentioned the hadith in his supplication to them, informing them of their secrets, some of their confessions, repentance, and acceptance of him. Ibn Ishaq said: "He commanded him to call Husayn ibn Numayr and said to him, 'Woe to you, what prompted you to do this?' He said, 'He prompted me to do so because I thought that Allah did not inform you of it, but when Allah informed you of it and you knew it, I bear witness today that you are the Messenger of Allah, and I have never believed in you with certainty before the Hour.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ removed his blame and forgave him with his statement."

[Machine] Regarding Alqama and Al-Aswad, they said, "We were with Abdullah when Hudhayfah passed by us and said, 'Hypocrisy has descended upon someone better than you.' We said, 'Glory be to Allah.' Abdullah laughed and went on. Then Hudhayfah passed by us again and instructed me to bring him some pebbles. I brought them to him and he said, 'Indeed, your companion has knowledge.' He laughed, and hypocrisy descended upon them, then he disappeared.' As for the saying of Allah ﷻ to His Prophet ﷺ about the hypocrites, 'Do not pray for any of them who dies' [Al-Tawbah 84], it was the cause for the revelation of this verse."

"When 'Abdullah bin Ubayy died, his son came to the Prophet and said: 'Give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it, and (some and) offer the (funeral) prayer for him, and pray for forgiveness for him'. So he gave him his shirt then he said: 'When you have finished, inform me and I will offer the (funeral) prayer for him.' But 'Umar stopped him and said: 'Hasn't Allah forbidden you to offer the (funeral) prayer for the hypocrites?' He said: 'I have two options. Whether you ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask no forgiveness for them." So he offered the (funeral) prayer for him. Then Allah, Most High, revealed: 'And never pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave.' So he stopped offering the (funeral) prayer for them." [Machine] "Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul was invited by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to perform funeral prayer for him. So, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, I hastened towards him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, would you pray for Ibn Ubayy, even though he said such and such on such and such day?' I repeated his statement to him, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, 'O Umar, postpone it for me.' When I insisted, he said, 'I was given a choice, so I chose that if I knew that by increasing the number beyond seventy, it would be forgiven for him, I would have increased it more.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the funeral prayer for him and then left. He did not stay except for a short while until the verses were revealed in disapproval: 'And never pray for any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.' (Quran 9:84) He said, 'I was amazed by my boldness towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on that day. By Allah, he and his Messenger know better.'"

[Machine] Hudhayfah said, "The Prophet ﷺ was traveling to Tabuk, and he got off his riding animal to receive revelation. I took hold of the reins and guided it until he finished receiving revelation. Then, the Prophet ﷺ stood up and approached his camel. He asked, 'Who is this?' I replied, 'Hudhayfah bin Yamamah.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'I have something to tell you secretly, never to be disclosed to anyone. I have been prohibited from praying for so-and-so and so-and-so, who are hypocrites and belong to a certain group.' When the Prophet ﷺ passed away and Umar succeeded him, whenever a companion of the Prophet ﷺ would die and Umar suspected that he belonged to that group, he would take Hudhayfah by the hand and lead him to the deceased. If Hudhayfah walked along, Umar would offer the funeral prayer. But if Hudhayfah held back, Umar would not offer the funeral prayer. Umar instructed that the one who offers the funeral prayer for this person should consider himself authorized, although the hadith had been conveyed through another chain of narration."

And he released it and sat beside him until the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , stood up and came to him and said, "Who is this?" Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman said, "It is Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Indeed, I have news for you that I have been ordered not to mention. I have been forbidden from praying upon so-and-so and so-and-so, a group of hypocrites, to anyone except Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman." When the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , passed away, during the caliphate of Umar bin Al-Khattab, whenever a man thought that he was from those hypocrites, Umar would take Hudhayfah's hand and lead him to pray over the deceased. If Hudhayfah walked with him, he would pray over the deceased, and if Hudhayfah resisted and refused to walk with him, Umar would leave with him and would not pray over the deceased. And Umar ordered that prayers should be offered over him.

He said, "And there remained of the hypocrites except four." He said, "And behind us was an Arab sitting who said, 'You companions of Muhammad ﷺ , you know what we do not know. You claim that there are no more hypocrites except four, so then what about those who sneak into our homes at night?' He said, 'Hudhayfah said, 'Those are the corrupt ones, indeed there are no more hypocrites except four. One of them is a very old man, if he were to drink cold water he would not find its coldness.'

People were (sometimes) judged by the revealing of a Divine Inspiration during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle but now there is no longer any more (new revelation). Now we judge you by the deeds you practice publicly, so we will trust and favor the one who does good deeds in front of us, and we will not call him to account about what he is really doing in secret, for Allah will judge him for that; but we will not trust or believe the one who presents to us with an evil deed even if he claims that his intentions were good.
[Machine] Ali said: "As for the heretics, they are presented with Islam. If they embrace Islam, they are spared; otherwise, they are killed."
[Machine] I heard Ibn Shihab say, "If the heretic denies [his beliefs] and clear evidence is presented against him, then he is to be killed. But if he confesses and repents, then he is spared from being killed."
[Machine] He said about the heretic: he should be killed and not given a chance to repent.
[Machine] Repentance is sought. If one repents, their repentance is accepted and their blood is protected. Allah is the Guardian of everything that is absent. Allah knows best.
