He saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform the ablution. He rinsed his mouth then cleaned his nose, then washed his face three times, then washed his right hand thrice and then the other one, thrice. He then took fresh water and wiped his head and then washed his feet till he cleaned them.

أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَمَضْمَضَ ثُمَّ اسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَيَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلاَثًا وَالأُخْرَى ثَلاَثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ بِمَاءٍ غَيْرِ فَضْلِ يَدِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا قَالَ أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ

I saw ‘ Ali performing ablution. He washed his face three times and his hands three times and wiped his head once. Then he (‘Ali) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution in this way.

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَاحِدَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا تَوَضَّأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

The ablution water was brought to the Messenger ﷺ and he performed ablution; he washed his hands up to wrists three times, then washed his forearms three times. He then rinsed his mouth and snuffed up water three times; then he wiped his head and ears inside and outside.

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ظَاهِرِهِمَا وَبَاطِنِهِمَا

"I saw 'Ali perform Wudu'. He washed his hands until they looked clean, then he rinsed his mouth three times and his nose three times, and he washed each forearm three times. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his feet up to the ankles. Then he stood up, took the left over water for his Wudu' and drank from it while standing. Then he said: 'I wanted to show you how the Prophet ﷺ performed Wudu'.'"

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ ثَلاَثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَخَذَ فَضْلَ طَهُورِهِ فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أُرِيَكُمْ كَيْفَ طَهُورُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

I saw 'Ali performing Wudu'. He washed his hands three times, and rinsed his mouth three times and his nose three times, and he washed his face three times and each forearm three times. Then he wiped his head and washed each foot three times. Then he said: 'This is the Wudu' of the Prophet ﷺ.'"

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا وَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا قَالَ هَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ

[AI] "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing ablution with a jug. He rinsed his mouth, sniffed water into his nostrils, then washed his face three times. He then washed his hands three times, wiped his head, and washed his feet until he made sure they were clean. After that, he wiped his head again with water that was not from his hands." Abu Muhammad said, "He meant by this the explanation of wiping the first time."

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَتَوَضَّأُ بِالْجُحْفَةِ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ بِمَاءٍ غَيْرِ فَضْلِ يَدَيْهِ» قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ «يُرِيدُ بِهِ تَفْسِيرَ مَسْحِ الْأَوَّلِ»

I entered upon Ibn Darah, the freed slave of ʿUthman, and he heard me rinsing my mouth. He said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am. He said:Shall I not tell you about the wudoo’ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I saw ʿUthman when he was in al-Maqaʿid. He called for water for wudoo’, then he rinsed his mouth three times, rinsed his nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his arms three times, wiped his head three times and washed his feet, then he said: Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudoo’, this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ.

عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَهَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as doing wudoo’. He washed his face three times and his hands three times, and he wiped his head and washed his feet.

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَيَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ غَسْلًا

I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudoo’: he washed his face three times and his hands three times, and he washed his arms three times each, and wiped his head, and washed his feet thoroughly.

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًاوَيَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ غَسْلًا

Some water for wudoo’ was brought to ʿAli ؓ . He rinsed his mouth and nose three times, and washed his face three times, and washed his hands and forearms three times. Then he wiped his head, then he washed his feet. Then he said: This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do wudoo’. Then he recited some Qurʿan. Then he said: This is for the one who is not junub; as for the one who is junub, no - (he should not recite), not even one verse.

أُتِيَ عَلِيٌّ بِوَضُوءٍ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ثُمَّ قَالَهَذَا لِمَنْ لَيْسَ بِجُنُبٍ فَأَمَّا الْجُنُبُ فَلا وَلا آيَةَ

This is the wudoo’ of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

أَنَّهُ غَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَقَالَ هَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

I saw ‘Ali ؓ doing wudooʿ. He washed his hands until they were clean, then he rinsed his mouth three times, then he rinsed his nose three times; he washed his face three times and his forearms three times; he wiped his head and washed his feet up to the ankles. And he took the leftover water and drank it whilst standing. Then he said: I wanted to show you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did wudooʿ ‘Abd Khair narrated a hadeeth like that of Abu Hayyah from ʿAli, except that ’Abd Khair said: When he finished his wudoo’, he took some of the leftover water in his hand and drank it.

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا يَتَوَضَّأُ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَأَخَذَ فَضْلَ طَهُورِهِ فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أُرِيَكُمْ كَيْفَ كَانَ طُهُورُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

I saw ‘Ali urinate in ar-Rahbah. (Then) he called for water and did wudoo’. He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his forearms three times each, wiped his head and washed his feet three times each. Then he stood up and drank from the leftover water, then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do what you have seen me do, and I wanted to show it to you.

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا بَالَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ وَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَشَرِبَ مِنْ فَضْلِ وَضُوئِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أُرِيَكُمُوهُ

I saw ‘Ali ؓ urinate in ar-Rahbah, then he called for water and did wudoo’. He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his forearms three times each, wiped his head and washed his feet three times each. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do as you have seen me do.

رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا بَالَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاثًا وَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ performed ablution, then he rinsed his mouth three times and sniffed water into his nose three times. He washed his face three times, and washed his hands three times. He wiped his head, and washed his feet.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَوَضَّأَ قَدَمَيْهِ

[AI] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing ablution with water from a vessel. He gargled, then inhaled water into his nostrils. Then he washed his face three times, and washed his right hand three times. Then he wiped his head with water that was not leftover from his hands, then he washed his feet until they were clean.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُمَضْمِضُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَسْتَنْشِقُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَغْسِلُ وَجْهَهُ وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا

[AI] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made wudu, then he gargled and sniffed water in his nose. He then washed his face three times, his right hand three times, and his left hand the same amount. He wiped his head with water separate from the water used for his hands, and he washed his feet until he cleaned them."

«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا وَالْأُخْرَى مِثْلَهَا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ بِمَاءٍ غَيْرِ فَضْلِ يَدِهِ وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا»

قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ هَكَذَا وَقَالَ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ دُونَ هَذَا كَفَاهُ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى أَبُو سَلَمَةَ عَنْ حُمْرَانَ إِلَّا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ

أَنَّهُ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا وَيَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ الْقَدَمَ الْيُمْنَى ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ الْيُسْرَى ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ

[AI] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ablution, washing his hands three times, rinsing his mouth three times, inhaling water into his nose three times, washing his face three times, and washing his arms three times, up to his elbows." The wording is from the hadith of Abu 'Umar.

[AI] I heard al-Miqdam bin Ma'di Karib say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought with ablution." So he performed ablution, washed his hands three times, then washed his face three times, then washed his arms three times, then gargled and sniffed water three times, then wiped his head, his ears (both outer and inner parts), and washed his feet three times.

سَمِعْتُ الْمِقْدَامَ بْنَ مَعْدِي كَرِبٍ يَقُولُ «أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِوَضُوءٍ» فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَأُذُنَيْهِ ظَاهِرِهِمَا وَبَاطِنِهِمَا وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to us and take a container of water with a sufficient amount, either a measure and a half or two-thirds of a measure. Then he would pour the water upon his hands three times, then he would rinse his mouth, inhale water into his nostrils, and then he would wash his face three times. He would then wipe his head twice and then wash his feet three times, three times.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَأْتِينَا فَآخُذُ مِيضَأَةً لَنَا قَدْرَ مُدٍّ وَنِصْفٍ أَوْ مُدٍّ وَثُلُثٍ فَأَسْكُبُ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَيَغْسِلُ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَيَتَمَضْمَضُ وَيَسْتَنْشِقُ وَيَغْسِلُ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَيَمْسَحُ بِرَأْسِهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يَغْسِلُ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا»

I saw 'Ali performing Wudu'. He washed his hands three times, and rinsed his mouth three times and his nose three times, and he washed his face three times and each forearm three times. " عَن ابْنِ دَارَةَ قَالَ: رَأيْتُ عُثْمَانَ دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَمَضْمَن ثَلاَثًا، وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَل وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا، وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِهِ ثَلاَثًا، وغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ أنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَهَذَا وضُوءُ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ ".

"عَنْ شَقِيقِ بنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ عُثَمانَ تَوَضَّأ فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسَتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا، وَغسَل وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَه ثَلاثًا، وَغَسَل ذِرَاعَيْه ثَلاثا ثَلاثا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِه ثَلاثا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْه ثَلاثًا ثلاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسولَ الله ﷺ فَعَلَ هَذَا".

"عن عَبْدِ خَير قَالَ: تَوَضَّأ علِى فمَضْمَض ثَلاثًا، واسْتَنْشَق ثَلاثًا مِنْ كَفٍّ وَاحِد، وَغَسَل وَجْهَه ثَلاثًا، ثُم ادْخَلَ يَدَه فِى الرَّكْوَةِ، فَمَسَحَ رَأسَه، وَغَسلَ رِجْلَيْه، ثُم قَالَ هذَا وضُوءُ نَبِيكمْ ﷺ "

"عن عبد خير، عن عَلِىٍّ: أَنَّهُ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاثًا، وَمَضْمَضَ، وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَذِراَعَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأسِهِ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ أنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ كَامِلًا فَليَنْظُرْ إِلَى هَذَا".

"عَنْ حَبَّانَ بْنِ وَاسِع الأنْصارِىِّ: أنَّهُ أَتَاهُ حَدثهُ أنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ الله بْنَ زَيْد ابْنِ عَاصِمٍ المَازنِىِّ يَذْكُرُ أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ الله ﷺ يَتَوَضَّأ فَمَضْمَضَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَنْثَرَ، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا وَيَدَيْهِ اليُمْنَى ثَلاثًا، وَالأخرَى ثَلاثًا، وَمَسَحَ رَأسَهُ بِمَاءٍ غَيْرِ فَضْلِ يَدَيْهِ، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا".

"تَوَضَّأ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثًا وَتَمَضْمَضَ، وَاسْتَنشَقَ ثَلاَثًا، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاثًا، وَذرَاعَيْه ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، وَمَسَحَ رَأسَهُ، وَمَسَحَ ظَاهِرَ أُذُنَيْه وَبَاطِنَهُمَا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْه ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا، وَقَالَ: هَذَا الوُضُوءُ، مَنْ زَاد أَوْ نَقَصَ، فَقَدْ ظَلَمَ وأسَاءَ".

" أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاثا، وَتَمَضْمَضَ وَاسَتْنَشَقَ ثَلاثا ثَلاثا، وَتَوَضأ ثلاثا ثَلاثا".
