The Prophet ﷺ once offered the eclipse prayer. He stood for a long time and then did a prolonged bowing. He stood up straight again and kept on standing for a long time, then bowed a long bowing and then stood up straight and then prostrated a prolonged prostration and then lifted his head and prostrated a prolonged prostration. And then he stood up for a long time and then did a prolonged bowing and then stood up straight again and kept on standing for a long time. Then he bowed a long bowing and then stood up straight and then prostrated a prolonged prostration and then lifted his head and went for a prolonged prostration. On completion o the prayer, he said, "Paradise became s near to me that if I had dared, I would have plucked one of its bunches for you and Hell became so near to me that said, 'O my Lord will I be among those people?' Then suddenly I saw a woman and a cat was lacerating her with it claws. On inquiring, it was said that the woman had imprisoned the cat till it died of starvation and she neither fed it no freed it so that it could feed itself."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَلَّى صَلاَةَ الْكُسُوفِ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ قَدْ دَنَتْ مِنِّي الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوِ اجْتَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهَا لَجِئْتُكُمْ بِقِطَافٍ مِنْ قِطَافِهَا وَدَنَتْ مِنِّي النَّارُ حَتَّى قُلْتُ أَىْ رَبِّ وَأَنَا مَعَهُمْ فَإِذَا امْرَأَةٌ حَسِبْتُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ تَخْدِشُهَا هِرَّةٌ قُلْتُ مَا شَأْنُ هَذِهِ قَالُوا حَبَسَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا لاَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلاَ أَرْسَلَتْهَا تَأْكُلُ قَالَ نَافِعٌ حَسِبْتُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مِنْ خَشِيشِ أَوْ خُشَاشِ الأَرْضِ  

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the eclipse prayer. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up, then he prostrated for a long time, then he sat up, then he prostrated for a long time. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up, then he prostrated for a long time, then he sat up, then he prostrated for a long time. Then he finished and said: ‘Paradise was brought close to me, so that if I had dared, I could have brought you some of its fruits. And Hell was brought near to me, until I said: “O Lord, am I one of them?” Nafi’ said: “I think that he said: ‘And I saw a woman being scratched by a cat that belonged to her. I said: “What is wrong with this woman?” They said: “She detained it until it died of hunger; she did not feed it and she did not let it loose to eat of the vermin of the earth.”  

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلاَةَ الْكُسُوفِ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ دَنَتْ مِنِّي الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوِ اجْتَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهَا لَجِئْتُكُمْ بِقِطَافٍ مِنْ قِطَافِهَا وَدَنَتْ مِنِّي النَّارُ حَتَّى قُلْتُ أَىْ رَبِّ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ قَالَ نَافِعٌ حَسِبْتُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَرَأَيْتُ امْرَأَةً تَخْدِشُهَا هِرَّةٌ لَهَا فَقُلْتُ مَا شَأْنُ هَذِهِ قَالُوا حَبَسَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا لاَ هِيَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلاَ هِيَ أَرْسَلَتْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خِشَاشِ الأَرْضِ  

[Machine] The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on a very hot day. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed with his companions, prolonging the standing until they started to lose their balance. Then he performed a prolonged bowing, lifting his head and prolonging it, then he performed another prolonged bowing, lifting his head and prolonging it, then he prostrated twice, and then stood up and performed the same actions. He then moved forward and backward twice, making it a total of four units of prayer and four prostrations. Then he said, "Everything that you have been promised was presented to me. Paradise was shown to me, and if I had taken a date or a fruit from it, I would have taken it. It was shown to me and my hand was withdrawn from it by Hisham's doubt. Hellfire was also shown to me, and I saw a dark-skinned, tall woman being punished in a cat for tying it up and not feeding it or giving it water, nor allowing it to eat from the earth's vegetation. I also saw Abu Thumamah Amr ibn Malik dragging his intestines in the fire, and they are both signs from the signs of Allah that I have shown you. So when it happens, then pray until it clears."  

خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي يَوْمٍ شَدِيدِ الْحَرِّ فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِأَصْحَابِهِ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ حَتَّى جَعَلُوا يَخِرُّونَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَنَعَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَتَقَدَّمُ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَتَأَخَّرُ فَكَانَتْ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّهُ عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ تُوعَدُونَهُ فَعُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ تَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا قِطْفًا أَخَذْتُهُ أَوْ قَالَ تَنَاوَلْتُ مِنْهَا قِطْفًا فَقَصُرَتْ يَدِي عَنْهُ شَكَّ هِشَامٌ وَعُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ النَّارُ فَجَعَلْتُ أَتَأَخَّرُ رَهْبَةَ أَنْ تَغْشَاكُمْ فَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا امْرَأَةً حِمْيَرِيَّةً سَوْدَاءَ طَوِيلَةً تُعَذَّبُ فِي هِرَّةٍ لَهَا رَبَطَتْهَا فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَسْقِهَا وَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ وَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا ثُمَامَةَ عَمْرَو بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ وَإِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ يُرِيكُمُوهَا فَإِذَا خَسَفَتْ فَصَلُّوا حَتَّى تَنْجَلِيَ  

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the eclipse prayer. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up, then he prostrated for a long time, then he sat up, then he prostrated for a long time. He stood for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up for a long time, then he bowed for a long time, then he stood up, then he prostrated for a long time, then he sat up, then he prostrated for a long time. Then he finished and said: ‘Paradise was brought close to me, so that if I had dared, I could have brought you some of its fruits. And Hell was brought near to me, until I said: “O Lord, am I one of them?” Nafi’ said: “I think that he said: ‘And I saw a woman being scratched by a cat that belonged to her. ﷺ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْكُسُوفِ قَالَتْ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّرَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ دَنَتْ مِنِّي الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ اجْتَرَأْتُ لَجِئْتُكُمْ بِقِطَافٍ مِنْ قِطَافِهَا وَدَنَتْ مِنِّي النَّارُ حَتَّى قُلْتُ يَا رَبُّ وَأَنَا مَعَهُمْ؟ وَإِذَا امْرَأَةٌ قَالَ نَافِعٌ حَسِبْتُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ تَخْدِشُهَا هِرَّةٌ قُلْتُ مَا شَأْنُ هَذِهِ؟ قِيلَ لِي حَبَسَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ لَا هِيَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلَا هِيَ أَرْسَلَتْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خِشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the eclipse prayer, then he stood and prolonged his standing. Then he went into Rukoo' (bowing) and prolonged his bowing. Then he raised his head and went into Sujood (prostration) and prolonged his prostration. Then he raised his head and went into Sujood again and prolonged his prostration. Then he left and said, "Paradise has been brought close to me to the point that if I had a grape from it, I would have brought it to you. And the Hellfire has been made distant from me to the point that when I saw a beautiful woman, a kitten came and scratched her. So I said, 'What is the matter with her?' They said, 'She has been detained until she dies of hunger, not feeding her or letting her eat.' I said, 'Nafi' (the narrator) thought he said, 'From a type of grass or the grass of the earth.'"  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى صَلَاةَ الْكُسُوفِ فَقَامَ فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ قَدْ قُرِّبَتْ مِنِّي الْجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَوْ أنِّي اخْتَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهَا لَجِئْتُكُمْ بِقِطَافٍ مِنْ قِطَافِهَا وَدَنَتْ مِنِّي النَّارُ حَتَّى قُلْتُ أَيْ رَبِّ وَأَنَا مَعَهُمْ فَإِذَا امْرَأَةٌ حَسْنَاءَ تَخْدِشُهَا هِرَّةٌ فَقُلْتُ مَا شَأْنُ هَذِهِ؟ قَالُوا حَبَسَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا لَا أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلَا أَرْسَلَتْهَا تَأْكُلُ قَالَ نَافِعٌ حَسِبْتُ قَالَ «مِنْ حَشِيشٍ أوْحَشَائِشِ الْأَرْضِ»  

"عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْت أَبِي بَكْرٍ: أنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَلَّى فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ فَأَطَالَ القِيَامَ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ [ثُمَّ رَفَعَ] فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَأَطَالَ الرُّكُوعَ، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَنَعَ فِي الثَّانِيَةِ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعَ فِي الأُولَى، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ: أُدْنِيتْ مِنِّي الجَنَّةُ حَتَّى لَو

[اجْتَرَأتُ] عَلَيْهَا لَجِئْتُكُمْ بِقِطَافٍ مِنْ قِطَافِهَا، وَأُدْنِيَتْ مِنِّي النَّارُ حَتَّى قُلْتُ: يَا رَبِّ [وَأَنَا مَعَهُمْ؟ ! ] فَإِذَا امْرَأَةٌ تَخْدِشُهَا هِرَّةٌ، قُلْتُ: مَا هَذِهِ؟ قَالَ: حَبَسَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا لَا أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلَا أَرْسَلَتْهَا تَأَكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الأَرْضِ".
