[Machine] A man invited us and brought thirteen roasted lizards with him. He said, "This is dinner, there are those who eat and those who abstain." When we woke up in the morning, we went to Ibn Abbas and I asked him about it. Some of his companions also asked him, until one of them said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Neither do I eat it nor do I prohibit it.'" Ibn Abbas then said, "You have said something evil. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent as a mediator, permitting and prohibiting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was at Maymuna's house, and with him were Fadl ibn Abbas, Khalid ibn Walid, and a woman. Lizard and bread were brought to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was about to eat, Maymuna said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is the meat of a lizard.' He withdrew his hand and said, 'I do not eat it, but you may.' Fadl ibn Abbas, Khalid ibn Walid, and the woman ate it. Maymuna said, 'I do not eat from a food that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not eat.'"

A newly wedded person of Medina invited us to a wedding feast, and he served us thirteen lizards. There were those who ate it and those who abandoned it. I met Ibn 'Abbas the next day, and informed him (about this) in the presence of many persons. Some of them said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had observed: I neither eat it nor forbid (anyone) from eating it, nor declare it to be unlawful. Thereupon Ibn 'Abbas said: Sad it is what you say! Allah's Apostle ﷺ has not been sent, but (to declare in clear words) the lawful and the unlawful (things). We were once with Messenger of Allah (may peace be. upon him) as he was with Maimuna, and there were with him al-Fadl b. 'Abbas, Khalid b. Walid and some women (also) when a tray of food containing flesh was presented to him. As Allah's Apostle ﷺ was about to eat that, Maimuna said: It is the flesh of the lizard. He withdrew his hand saying: That is the flesh which I never eat; but he said to them (those who were present there): You may eat. Al-Fadl ate out of that, so did Khalid b Walid, and the women. Maimuna (however) said: I do not eat anything but that which Messenger of Allah ﷺ eats.

[Machine] Some of them said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I neither make it lawful nor forbidden.'" Ibn Abbas said, "How terrible is what you have said! Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was only sent as one who makes things lawful and forbidden. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with Maymuna and with him were Fadl ibn Abbas and Khalid ibn Walid and a woman. So, some khawans were brought to him, along with bread and game meat. He held his hand and said, 'This meat is not for me to eat, but you may eat.' So, Khalid ibn Walid, Fadl ibn Abbas, and the woman ate. Maymuna said, 'I will not eat any food that the Prophet ﷺ did not eat from.' So, Maymuna did not eat."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it, nor do I command it, nor do I prohibit it." Ibn Abbas said, "What you are saying is bad. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was never sent except as a legalizer and a prohibition legislator." The meat of a monitor lizard was brought close to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and he stretched out his hand to eat it. Maymunah said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is the meat of a monitor lizard." So he withdrew his hand and said, "I have never eaten it before, so do not eat it." Fadl ibn Abbas, Khalid ibn Walid, and a woman who was with them ate it. Maymunah said, "I do not eat from a food that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , did not eat."
