that al-Ḥārith b. Hishām ؓ asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah of Allah, how does the Waḥī (Revelation) come to you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "(1) Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell: and this form is the hardest upon me and then ˹this state˺ is lifted off of me after I have grasped what is inspired. And (2) sometimes the Angel comes in the form of a man and talks to me and I grasp whatever he says."

ʿĀʾishah added: "I saw the Waḥī being revealed upon him on an extremely cold day and then ˹the state˺ was lifted from him and his forehead was dripping with sweat."  

أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ ؓ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْىُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «(١) أَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي مِثْلَ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ: وَهُوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَىَّ فَيُفْصَمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ عَنْهُ مَا قَالَ، (٢) وَأَحْيَانًا يَتَمَثَّلُ لِيَ الْمَلَكُ رَجُلاً فَيُكَلِّمُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ۔»

قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ: وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْىُ فِي الْيَوْمِ الشَّدِيدِ الْبَرْدِ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنْهُ وَإِنَّ جَبِينَهُ لَيَتَفَصَّدُ عَرَقًا۔  

Al Harith bin Hisham asked the Prophet, "How does the divine inspiration come to you?" He replied, "In all these ways: The Angel sometimes comes to me with a voice which resembles the sound of a ringing bell, and when this state abandons me, I remember what the Angel has said, and this type of Divine Inspiration is the hardest on me; and sometimes the Angel comes to me in the shape of a man and talks to me, and I understand and remember what he says."  

أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْىُ قَالَ كُلُّ ذَاكَ يَأْتِي الْمَلَكُ أَحْيَانًا فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ مَا قَالَ وَهْوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَىَّ وَيَتَمَثَّلُ لِي الْمَلَكُ أَحْيَانًا رَجُلاً فَيُكَلِّمُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ  

How does the the wahi (inspiration) come to you? He said: At times it comes to me like the ringing of a bell and that is most severe for me and when it is over I retain that (what I had received in the form of wahi), and at times an Angel in the form of a human being comes to me (and speaks) and I retain whatever he speaks.  

أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْىُ فَقَالَ أَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ وَهُوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَىَّ ثُمَّ يَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُهُ وَأَحْيَانًا مَلَكٌ فِي مِثْلِ صُورَةِ الرَّجُلِ فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ  

"Al-Harith bin Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'How does the Revelation come to you?' He said: 'Like the ringing of a bell, and when it departs I remember what he (the Angel) said, and this is the hardest on me. And sometimes he (the Angel) comes to me in the form of a man and gives it to me.'"

that Al-Harith bin Hisham asked the Prophet ﷺ: 'How does the Revelation come to you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell and that is the hardest upon me, and sometimes the angel will appear to me like a man, and he will speak to me such that I understand what he says.'" 'Aishah said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the Revelation was descending upon him on an extremely cold day. Then it ceased and his forehead was flooded with sweat."  

أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْىُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ وَهُوَ أَشَدُّ عَلَىَّ وَأَحْيَانًا يَتَمَثَّلُ لِي الْمَلَكُ رَجُلاً فَيُكَلِّمُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْىُ فِي الْيَوْمِ الشَّدِيدِ الْبَرْدِ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنْهُ وَإِنَّ جَبِينَهُ لَيَتَفَصَّدُ عَرَقًا  

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from A'isha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ that al-Harith ibn Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ "How does the revelation come to you?" and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell, and that is the hardest for me, and when it leaves me I remember what it has said. And sometimes the angel appears to me in the likeness of a man and talks to me and I remember what he says." A'isha added, "I saw it coming down on him on an intensely cold day, and when it had left him his forehead was dripping with sweat."  

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْىُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ وَهُوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَىَّ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ مَا قَالَ وَأَحْيَانًا يَتَمَثَّلُ لِيَ الْمَلَكُ رَجُلاً فَيُكَلِّمُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْيَوْمِ الشَّدِيدِ الْبَرْدِ فَيُفْصِمُ عَنْهُ وَإِنَّ جَبِينَهُ لَيَتَفَصَّدُ عَرَقًا

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ asked a man, "How does revelation come to you, O Prophet of Allah?" He replied, "Revelation sometimes comes to me like the ringing of a bell, and then it goes away from me. And when it leaves me, it is the most difficult for me. Sometimes it comes to me in the form of a man or an angel, who informs me of what he says."  

سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْيُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ؟ قَالَ يَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا لَهُ صَلْصَلَةٌ كَصَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ فَيَنْفَصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ وَذَلِكَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَيَّ وَيَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا فِيصُورَةِ الرَّجُلِ أَوْ قَالَ الْمَلَكِ فَيُخْبِرُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ  

Al-Harith bin Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'How does the Revelation come to you?' He said: 'Like the ringing of a bell, and this is the hardest on me. When it departs I remember what he said. And sometimes the Angel appears to me in the form of a man and speaks to me, and I remember what he said." [Machine] "He (someone) asked the Prophet ﷺ, 'How does revelation come to you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded, 'It comes to me like the ringing of a bell and then I understand what is said.' He (the person) said, 'And it is harder for me, and sometimes the angel comes to me and takes the form of a human and speaks to me what he says.'"  

أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ مَا قَالَ» قَالَ «وَهُوَ أَشَدُّ عَلَيَّ وَأَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي الْمَلَكُ فَيَتَمَثَّلُ لِي فَيُكَلِّمُنِي مَا يَقُولُ»  

[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "How does the revelation come to you?" He said, "The revelation comes to me like the ringing of a bell, sometimes it comes to me in the form of a man who speaks to me, and it is easier for me to understand."  

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ قَالَ يَأْتِينِي صَلْصَلَةً كَصَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ وَيَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا فِي صُورَةِ رَجُلٍ يُكَلِّمُنِي كَلَامًا وَهُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيَّ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ

[Machine] Al-Harith ibn Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ how revelation comes to him. He said, "Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell, and it becomes faint to me even though I comprehend it. Other times, it comes to me in the form of an angel appearing as a man, and I understand what he says."  

سَأَلَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيهِ الْوَحْيُ قَالَ «يَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا مِثْلَ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُهُ وَهُوَ أَشَدُّ عَلَيَّ وَيَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا الْمَلَكُ فِي صُورَةِ الرَّجُلِ فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ»  

"Al-Harith bin Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'How does the Revelation come to you?' He said: 'Like the ringing of a bell, and when it departs I remember what he (the Angel) said, and this is the hardest on me. And sometimes he (the Angel) comes to me in the form of a man and gives it to me.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 933)  

سَأَلَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ قَالَ فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعِيتُ عَنْهُ مَا قَالَ وَهُوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَيَّ وَأَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي فِي مِثْلِ صُورَةِ الْفَتَى فَيَنْبِذُهُ إِلَيَّ  

"Al-Harith bin Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'How does the Revelation come to you?' He said: 'Like the ringing of a bell, and when it departs I remember what he (the Angel) said, and this is the hardest on me. And sometimes he (the Angel) comes to me in the form of a man and gives it to me.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 933)  

سَأَلَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ قَالَ «فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ فَيُفْصَمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ عَنْهُ وَهُو أَشَدُّهُ عَلَيَّ وَأَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي فِي مِثْلِ صُورَةِ الْفَتَى فَيَنْبِذُهُ إِلَيَّ»  

"عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ

رَسُولَ الله ﷺ كَيْفَ يَأتِيكَ الْوَحْىُ؟ فَقَالَ: أَحْيَانًا يَأتِينِى فِى مِثْلِ صَلْصَلِ الْجَرَسِ فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّى وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ مَا قَالَ، وَهُوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَىَّ، وَأَحْيَانًا يَأتِينِى الْمَلَكُ فَيَتَمَثَّلُ لِىَ رَجُلًا فَيُكَلِّمُنِى، وَأَعِى مَا يَقُولُ".
