[Machine] A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about his fasting. He became angry and said, "Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is satisfied, or he said, 'We are satisfied with Allah as our Lord, Islam as our religion, and Muhammad as our Messenger, and our pledge is a pledge." Then Umar or another man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, there is a man who fasts continuously." He said, "He does not fast nor break his fast. What he fasts and what he breaks his fast with is fasting two days and breaking his fast for one day." He said, "Who can endure that?" He said, "He can break his fast for one day and fast for one day." He said, "I wish Allah would strengthen us for that." He said, "Fasting one day and breaking the fast for one day." He said, "What about the fasting of Monday and Thursday?" He said, "That is a day on which I was born and on which revelation was sent down to me." He said, "Fasting three days of each month and Ramadan to Ramadan is the fasting of the whole year, and its breaking of fast." He said, "What about fasting on the day of Arafah?" He said, "It expiates for the previous and coming year." He said, "What about fasting on the day of Ashura?" He said, "It expiates for the previous year."

[AI] that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about his fasting. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry, so Umar ᴿᴬ said, "We are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, with Muhammad as Messenger, and with our pledge as a pledge."

He said: He was asked about fasting continuously, and he said: "He has neither fasted nor broken the fast—or: he has not fasted and has not broken the fast." He said: He was asked about fasting two days and breaking the fast one day, and he said: "Who can bear that?" He said: He was asked about fasting one day and breaking the fast two days, and he said: "Would that Allah had given us strength for that." He said: He was asked about fasting one day and breaking the fast one day, and he said: "That is the fast of my brother Dawud, upon him be peace."

He said: He was asked about fasting on Monday, and he said: "That is a day on which I was born, and a day on which I was sent—or on which revelation was sent down to me." He said: Then he said: "Fasting three days of every month, and Ramadan to Ramadan, is fasting for a lifetime."

He said: He was asked about fasting the Day of Arafah, and he said: "It expiates the past year and the coming one." He said: He was asked about fasting the Day of Ashurah, and he said: "It expiates the past year."

[AI] In this hadith, in the narration of Shubah, he said: "He was asked about fasting on Monday and Thursday." We have left out mention of Thursday because we regard it as an error.

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: How do you fast, Messenger of Allah? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry at what he said. When Umar observed this (his anger), he said: We are satisfied with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as Prophet. We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah, and from the anger of His Apostle. Umar continued to repeat these words till his anger cooled down. He then asked: Messenger of Allah, what is the position of one who observes a perpetual fast? He replied: May he not fast or break his fast. Musaddad said in his version: He has neither fasted nor broken his fast. The narrator, Ghaylan, doubted the actual wordings. He asked: What is the position of one who fasts two days and does not fast one day? He said: Is anyone able to do that? He asked: What is the position of one who fasts every second day (i.e. fasts one day and does not fasts the next day)? He (the Prophet) said: This is the fast that David observed. He asked: Messenger of Allah, what is the position of one who fasts one day and breaks it for two days? He replied: I wish I were given the power to observe that. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The observance of three days' fast every month and of one Ramadan to the other (i.e. the fast of Ramadan every year) is (equivalent to) a perpetual fast. I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Arafah may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming year, and I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Ashura' may atone for the sins of the preceding year.
