As he was being brought to Allah's Apostle ﷺ I saw Ma'iz b. Malik-a short-statured person with strong sinews, having no cloak around him. He bore witness against his own self four times that he had committed adultery, whereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Perhaps (you kissed her or embraced her). He said: No. by God, one deviating (from the path of virtue) has committed adultery. He then got him stoned (to death), and then delivered the address: Behold, as we set out for Jihad in the cause of Allah, one of you lagged behind and shrieked like the bleating of a male goat, and gave a small quantity of milk. By Allah, in case I get hold of him, I shall certainly punish him.

رَأَيْتُ مَاعِزَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حِينَ جِيءَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ قَصِيرٌ أَعْضَلُ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ فَشَهِدَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ أَرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ أَنَّهُ زَنَى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَعَلَّكَ قَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ قَدْ زَنَى الأَخِرُ قَالَ فَرَجَمَهُ ثُمَّ خَطَبَ فَقَالَ أَلاَ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا غَازِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ خَلَفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ أَحَدُهُمُ الْكُثْبَةَ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ إِنْ يُمْكِنِّي مِنْ أَحَدِهِمْ لأُنَكِّلَنَّهُ عَنْهُ

We set out for Jihad in the cause of Allah and one of you lagged behind and shrieked like the bleating of a male goat and one of then (goats' gave a small quantity of milk. In case Allah gives me power over one of them, I will punish him (in such a way that it may have a deterrent effect upon others). In another narration transmitted on the authority of Sa'id b Jubair (the words are), that He (the Holy Prophet) turned him away four times."

سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ يَقُولُ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ قَصِيرٍ أَشْعَثَ ذِي عَضَلاَتٍ عَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ وَقَدْ زَنَى فَرَدَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا غَازِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ تَخَلَّفَ أَحَدُكُمْ يَنِبُّ نَبِيبَ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثْبَةَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يُمْكِنِّي مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِلاَّ جَعَلْتُهُ نَكَالاً أَوْ نَكَّلْتُهُ قَالَ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ رَدَّهُ أَرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ

I saw Ma’iz b. Malik when he was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He was a small and muscular man. He did not wear the loose outer garment. He made confession about him four times that he committed fornication. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Perhaps you kissed her. He said that this most discarded man has committed fornication. He said: So he had him stoned to death and gave an address, saying: Beware, whenever we go out on an expedition in the path of Allah, one of them (I.e. the people) lags behind with a bleating sound like that of a he-goat, and gives modicum of his milk(i.e. sperm) to one of the women. If Allah gives control over any of them, I shall deter him from them (i.e. women) by punishing him severely.

رَأَيْتُ مَاعِزَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حِينَ جِيءَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ رَجُلاً قَصِيرًا أَعْضَلَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ فَشَهِدَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ أَرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ أَنَّهُ قَدْ زَنَى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَعَلَّكَ قَبَّلْتَهَا قَالَ لاَ وَاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ قَدْ زَنَى الآخِرُ قَالَ فَرَجَمَهُ ثُمَّ خَطَبَ فَقَالَ أَلاَ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ﷻ خَلَفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثْبَةَ أَمَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ إِنْ يُمَكِّنِّي مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِلاَّ نَكَلْتُهُ عَنْهُنَّ

[AI] He heard Jabir bin Samurah saying, "The Prophet ﷺ was presented with a short man wearing an izār (a lower garment) without a rida (a upper garment). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was reclining on a cushion on his left side. He spoke to him, but I do not know what he said to him as I was far away from them and the people were between me and him. He said, "Take him away and stone him." Then he said, "Bring him back." He spoke to him again and I listened, although the people were still between me and him. Then he said, "Take him away and stone him." Then the Prophet ﷺ stood up and delivered a sermon, and I listened to it. Then he said, "Whenever we go out in the cause of Allah, one of them would be given a she-camel to ride and the rest would share its milk. By Allah, I cannot convey the like of one of them without facing hardship."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ يَقُولُ أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِمَاعِزِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَجُلٍ قَصِيرٍ فِي إِزَارٍ مَا عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُتَّكِئٌ عَلَى وِسَادَةٍ عَلَى يَسَارِهِ فَكَلَّمَهُ فَمَا أَدْرِي مَا يُكَلِّمُهُ بِهِ وَأَنَا بَعِيدٌ مِنْهُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ الْقَوْمُ فَقَالَ «اذْهَبُوا بِهِ فَارْجُمُوهُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «رُدُّوهُ» فَكَلَّمَهُ أَيْضًا وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ غَيْرَ أَنَّ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ الْقَوْمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «اذْهَبُوا بِهِ فَارْجُمُوهُ» ثُمَّ قَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَخَطَبَ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ خَلَفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثْبَةَ مِنَ اللَّبَنِ؟ وَاللَّهِ لَا أَقْدِرُ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا نَكَّلْتُ بِهِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a short, disheveled man with muscles, wearing a waist wrap, who had committed adultery twice. He ordered for him to be stoned. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whenever we send a group of soldiers in the cause of Allah, one of them lags behind with a shepherd's crook, giving it to one of them as a reward for bravery. Verily, Allah will not enable me to overtake any one of them except that I will make him an example (of punishment) or I will punish him."

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ قَصِيرٍ أَشْعَثَ ذِي عَضَلَاتٍ عَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ وَقَدْ زَنَى فَرَدَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا غَازِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَخَلَّفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثْبَةَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُمَكِّنُنِي مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا جَعَلْتُهُ نَكَالًا أَوْ نَكَّلْتُهُ

[AI] He witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and a man with curly, short hair and muscular body was brought to him confessing to adultery. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him twice and then ordered to stone him, saying, "Every time we go on a military expedition for the sake of Allah, one of you falls behind with a young she-goat as his mate. Surely, I will not spare any of them, but will ensure their punishment." Perhaps he said, "Simak, unless I do not carry out the punishment on him." He said, "Simak," so I mentioned it to Sa'id bin Jubair and he said, "The Prophet ﷺ ordered to return him four times." Shu'bah said, "Al-Hakam said it is recommended to return him four times." Hammad said, "Once."

أَنَّهُ شَهِدَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأُتِيَ بِرَجُلٍ أَشْعُرَ قَصِيرٍ ذِي عَضَلَاتٍ أَقَرَّ بِالزِّنَى فَرَدَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ وَقَالَ «كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا غَازِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ يَتَخَلَّفُ أَحَدُكُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثَيْبَةَ أَمَا إِنِّي لَنْ أُوتِيَ بِأَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا جَعَلْتُهُ نَكَالًا» وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ سِمَاكٌ إِلَّا نَكَّلْتُهُ قَالَ سِمَاكٌ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِسَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فَقَالَ رَدَّهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ وَقَالَ الْحَكَمُ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَرُدَّهُ أَرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ وَقَالَ حَمَّادٌ مَرَّةً

سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرة يَقُولُ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَوْ أُتي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ أَشْعَرَ قَصِيرٍ لَهُ عَضَلاتٌ فَأَقَرَّ أَنَّهُ قَدْ زَنَى فَرَدَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا غَازِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ تَخَلَّفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ أَحَدُهُمُ الْكَثْبَةَ لا أُوتَى بِأَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إلاَّ جَعَلْتُهُ نَكَالا وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ قَدْ رَواه غَيرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ سِمَاك عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرة مِنْهُمْ إِسْرَائِيلُ وَأبُو عَوَانة وَغَيْرُهُمَا وَشُعْبَةُ أَحْسَنُهُمْ حَدِيثًا لَهُ عَنْ سِمَاك وَأَتَمُّهُمْ حديثا

[AI] He heard Jabir bin Samurah say that a man with long curly hair and strong muscles admitted to committing adultery. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered that he be stoned to death, and he said, "Whenever we go out for Jihad in the cause of Allah, if one of you lags behind, he will be struck with a reed from the she-camel. As for me, I will not punish any of you in this manner unless I make him a precedent. Perhaps someone said, 'Fish!,' but I will surely punish him."

[AI] A man brought a short, lame goat to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was reclining on a cushion. When it was brought to him, he shrugged his cushion and spoke to it, causing the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to turn red. He realized that he had angered him and gestured with his hand to stone the man. Then he sent a man after him and spoke to him briefly, then said, "Take him and stone him." The people became angry and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and praised Allah and praised him, then said, "Afterwards, whenever we go out in the way of Allah, one of them leaves behind a female goat, as a lure for one of us, like the lure of a goat, and he is granted something. I swear, if Allah enables me to seize one of them, I will certainly cut off his hand."

جِيءَ بِمَاعِزٍ رَجُلٍ قَصِيرٍ مُتَّزِرٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُتَّكِئًا عَلَى وِسَادَةٍ فَلَمَّا أُتِيَ بِهِ اجْتَنَحَ الْوِسَادَةَ فَكَلَّمَهُ فَاحْمَرَّ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَرَفَ أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَغْضَبَهُ فَأَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ أَنِ ارْجُمُوهُ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ رَجُلًا فِي أَثَرِهِ وَكَلَّمَهُ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ «اذْهَبُوا بِهِ فَارْجُمُوهُ» فَثَارَ الْقَوْمُ فَصَعِدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَا بَعْدُ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَخَلَّفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ شَيْئًا أَمَا لَئِنْ أَمْكَنَنِي اللهُ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمْ لَأُنَكِّلَنَّ بِهِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for Ma'iz ibn Malik, a man who was rahter short, with strong muscles, and confessed to him about committing adultery. The Messenger turned away from him, but he came to him from another angle, and again the Messenger turned away from him. He said, "I don't know if it happened twice or thrice." Then, he ordered for him to be stoned. The Messenger ﷺ said, "Whenever we go out for battle, one of them will follow behind someone, his neck like that of a goat, and he would grant one of them permission to have intercourse. Indeed, Allah (SWT) would not allow me to spare anyone of them without making him an example for them or punishing him on their behalf." Saeed ibn Jubair mentioned this to me and said, "Reject it four times."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِمَاعِزِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَجُلٍ أَشْعَرَ قَصِيرٍ ذِي عَضَلَاتٍ فَأَقَرَّ لَهُ بِالزِّنَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ فَأَتَاهُ مِنْ وَجْهِهِ الْآخَرِ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَا أَدْرِي مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ وَقَالَ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا غَازِينَ خَلَفَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَنِبُّ نَبِيبَ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثْبَةَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ لَا يُمَكِّنُنِي مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا جَعَلْتُهُ نَكَالًا عَنْهُنَّ أَوْ نَكَّلْتُهُ عَنْهُنَّ قَالَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِسَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فَقَالَ رَدَّهُ أَرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ

"عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ: أُتِىَ ﷺ بِمَاعِزِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ: رَجُلٍ قَصِيرٍ في إِزَار مَا عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ، وَرَسُولُ الله ﷺ مُتَكِئٌ عَلَى وِسَادَةٍ عَلَى يَسَارِهِ فَكَلَّمَهُ ()، وَمَا أَدْرِى مَا يُكَلِّمُهُ وَأَنَا بَعِيدٌ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهُ الْقَوْمُ، فَقَالَ: اذْهَبُوا بِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: رُدُّوهُ، فَكَلَّمَهُ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ غَيْرَ أَنَّ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهُ الْقَوْمَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: اذْهَبُوا بِهِ فَارْجُمُوهُ، ثُمَّ قَامَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ خَطِيبًا فَقَالَ: أَوَ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا في سَبِيلِ الله خَلَفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ ( ) كَنَيبِ التَّيْسِ، يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثَيْبَةَ ( * *) مِنَ اللَّبنِ؟ ! وَالله لاَ أَقْدِرُ عَلَى أَحَدِهِمْ إِلاَّ نَكَّلْتُ بِهِ".
