Bequeathing one-third and the Prophet's prayer for Saad

ahmad:1474 – Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd > al-Jaʿd b. Aws > ʿĀʾishah bt. Saʿd > Saʿd

[AI] I became ill in Mecca, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have wealth and only one daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth and leave her one-third? He said, "No." I said: Should I bequeath half and leave her half? He said, "No." I said: Should I bequeath one-third and leave her two-thirds? He said, "One-third, and one-third is much," three times. Then he placed his hand on my forehead and wiped my face, chest, and belly, and said, "O Allah, heal Saad and complete his migration for him." I continued to feel as though I could still sense the coolness of his hand on my liver until this very hour.

أحمد:١٤٧٤ – حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الْجَعْدِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ بِنْتُ سَعْدٍ قالتْ: قَالَ سَعْدٌ

اشْتَكَيْتُ شَكْوًى لِي بِمَكَّةَ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ مَالًا وَلَيْسَ لِي إِلا ابْنَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ، أَفَأُوصِي بِثُلُثَيْ مَالِي وَأَتْرُكُ لَهَا الثُّلُثَ؟ قَالَ: «لَا». قَالَ: أَفَأُوصِي بِالنِّصْفِ وَأَتْرُكُ لَهَا النِّصْفَ؟ قَالَ: «لَا». قَالَ: أَفَأُوصِي بِالثُّلُثِ وَأَتْرُكُ لَهَا الثُّلُثَيْنِ؟ قَالَ: «الثُّلُثُ، وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ»، ثَلاثَ مِرَارٍ. قَالَ: فَوَضَعَيَدَهُ عَلَى جَبْهَتِهِ، فَمَسَحَ وَجْهِي وَصَدْرِي وَبَطْنِي، وَقَالَ: «اللهم اشْفِ سَعْدًا وَأَتِمَّ لَهُ هِجْرَتَهُ». فَمَا زِلْتُ يُخَيَّلُ إِلَيَّ بِأَنِّي أَجِدُ بَرْدَ يَدِهِ عَلَى كَبِدِي حَتَّى السَّاعَةِ.

I became seriously ill at Mecca and the Prophet ﷺ came to visit me. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He said, "No." I said, "Shall I bequeath half and leave half?" He said, "No." I said, "Shall I bequeath one third and leave two thirds?" He said, "One third is alright, though even one third is too much." Then he placed his hand on his forehead and passed it over my face and ʿAbdomen and said, "O Allah! Cure Saʿd and complete his emigration." I feel as if I have been feeling the coldness of his hand on my liver ever since.

تَشَكَّيْتُ بِمَكَّةَ شَكْوًا شَدِيدًا فَجَاءَنِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعُودُنِي فَقُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أَتْرُكُ مَالاً وَإِنِّي لَمْ أَتْرُكْ إِلاَّ ابْنَةً وَاحِدَةً فَأُوصِي بِثُلُثَىْ مَالِي وَأَتْرُكُ الثُّلُثَ فَقَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَأُوصِي بِالنِّصْفِ وَأَتْرُكُ النِّصْفَ قَالَ لاَ قُلْتُ فَأُوصِي بِالثُّلُثِ وَأَتْرُكُ لَهَا الثُّلُثَيْنِ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَثِيرٌ ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى جَبْهَتِهِ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ يَدَهُ عَلَى وَجْهِي وَبَطْنِي ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا وَأَتْمِمْ لَهُ هِجْرَتَهُ فَمَا زِلْتُ أَجِدُ بَرْدَهُ عَلَى كَبِدِي فِيمَا يُخَالُ إِلَىَّ حَتَّى السَّاعَةِ
