"We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ and he had a stick in his hand. He scratched in the ground with it, then raised his head and said: 'There is no one among you but his place in Paradise or Hell has already been decreed.' He was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not then rely upon that?' He said: 'No, strive and do not rely upon that, for it will be made easy for each person to do that for which he was created.' Then he recited: "As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, and believes in Al-Husna. We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. And denies Al-Husna. We will make smooth for him the path for evil. "  

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَبِيَدِهِ عُودٌ فَنَكَتَ فِي الأَرْضِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ مَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلاَّ وَقَدْ كُتِبَ مَقْعَدُهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَمَقْعَدُهُ مِنَ النَّارِ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَفَلاَ نَتَّكِلُ قَالَ لاَ اعْمَلُوا وَلاَ تَتَّكِلُوا فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ لِمَا خُلِقَ لَهُ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى وَاتَّقَى * وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى * فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَى * وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَى * وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى * فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَى}  

One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with a stick in his hand, with which he was hitting the ground. He raised his head and said: ʿThere is no soul among you but his place in Paradise or Hell is known.” They said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, why should we strive? He said: ʿKeep striving for everyone will be helped to do that for which he was created. As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him. And believes in Al-Husna. Al-Husna: The Best (i.e. either la ilaha illallah: none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) or a reward from Allah (i.e. Allah will compensate him for what he will spend in Allahʿs way or bless him with Paradise) We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, And belies Al-Husna, We will make smooth for him the path for evil, [al-Lail 92:5-10].ʿ  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ جَالِسًا وَفِي يَدِهِ عُودٌ يَنْكُتُ بِهِ قَالَ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ مَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ إِلا وَقَدْ عُلِمَ مَنْزِلُهَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ قَالَ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَلِمَ نَعْمَلُ؟ قَالَ اعْمَلُوا فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ لِمَا خُلِقَ لَهُ {أَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى وَاتَّقَى وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَى وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَى وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَى} [الليل 510]  

We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ at a funeral - I [the narrator] think he said in Baqeeʿ al-Gharqad - and he struck the ground (with a stick), then he lifted his head and said: “There is no one among you but Allah has decreed his place in Paradise or his place in Hell.” We said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, shouldnʿt we rely on that? He said: ʿNo, rather strive, for each will be enabled [to do the appropriate deeds].” Then he recited: ʿAs for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, And believes in Al-Husna.ʿ We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self sufficient. And belies Al-Husna. We will make smooth for him the path for evil” [Al-Lail 92:5-10]. كُنَّا جُلُوسًا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي جَنَازَةٍ أُرَاهُ قَالَ بِبَقِيعِ الْغَرْقَدِ قَالَ فَنَكَتَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ مَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا قَدْ كُتِبَ مَقْعَدُهُ مِنَ الجَنَّةِ وَمَقْعَدُهُ مِنَ النَّارِ قَالَ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَفَلَا نَتَّكِلُ؟ قَالَ لَا اعْمَلُوا فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ {فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى وَاتَّقَى وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَى وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَى وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنى فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلعُسْرَى} [الليل 510]  

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our religion as if we were created solely for it. In what do we exert our efforts? Is it in something predetermined and decreed, or in something we initiate? He ﷺ replied, 'Rather, it is in that which is predetermined and decreed.' Suraaqah said, 'Then what is the point of our actions, O Messenger of Allah?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'Work, for every worker will be facilitated for that which he was created for.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this verse, 'So as for he who gives and fears Allah, and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease. But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need and denies the best [reward], We will ease him toward difficulty.' He said, 'There is no deity except Allah.' He said, 'We will ease him toward difficulty.'"  

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنَا عَنْ دِينِنَا هَذَا كَأَنَّنَا خُلِقْنَا لَهُ السَّاعَةَ؟ فِي أَيِّ شَيْءٍ نَعْمَلُ؟ أَفِي شَيْءٍ تَثْبُتُ فِيهِ الْمَقَادِيرُ وَجَرَتْ فِيهِ الْأَقْلَامُ أَمْ فِي أَمْرٍ مُسْتَأْنَفٍ؟ قَالَ «بَلْ فِيمَا تَثْبُتُ فِيهِ الْأَقْلَامُ» قَالَ سُرَاقَةُ فَفِيمَ الْعَمَلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اعْمَلُوا فَكُلُّ عَامِلٍ مُيَسَّرٌ لِمَا خُلِقَ لَهُ» وَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى وَاتَّقَى وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى} بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ {فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَى وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَى وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى} قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ {فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَى }
