[Machine] We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ in the mosque when his gaze fell upon a man walking in the mosque. The Prophet said, "O so-and-so." The man replied, "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet asked him, "Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The man replied, "No." The Prophet asked him, "Do you recite the Torah?" The man replied, "Yes, and the Gospel too." The Prophet then asked, "And the Quran?" The man replied, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, if I wish, I can recite it." The Prophet then addressed him, saying, "Do you find me in the Torah and the Gospel?" The man replied, "I find you similar to you, similar to your appearance, and similar to the way you speak. We had hoped that you would be among us, but when you left, we were bewildered as to whether or not you were the one." The Prophet asked, "Why is that?" The man said, "Because with him (referring to the Mahdi) are seventy thousand people from his nation who will enter Paradise without being held to account or punished, and with you are a small group." The Prophet said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, I am the one, and they are my nation. They are more than seventy thousand."

Obstinacy of some of the People of the Book toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

ذِكْرُ عِنَادِ بَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ

We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ in the mosque when his gaze fixed upon a man walking in the mosque. He said, “O so-and-so, do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “No.” He said, “Do you read the Torah?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “And the Gospel?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “And the Quran?” He replied, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, if I wished I could recite it.”

He then called out to him and said, “Do you find me in the Torah and the Gospel?” He replied, “We find one like you, and the likeness of your community, and the likeness of the one who will bring you forth. We had hoped that you would be among us, but when you emerged we feared that it was you, so we looked, and it was not you.” He said, “And why is that?” He replied, “Because with him from his community are seventy thousand for whom there will be neither reckoning nor punishment, whereas with you there are only a few.” He said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, I am indeed he, and it is indeed my community, and they are indeed more than seventy thousand, and seventy thousand, and seventy thousand.”
