I said to Uthman ibn Talhah al-Hajabi): What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to you when he called you? He said: (The Prophet said:) I forgot to order you to cover the two horns (of the lamb), for it is not advisable that there should be anything in the House (the Ka'bah) which diverts the attention of the man at prayer. Ibn as-Sarh said: The name of my maternal uncle is Musafi' ibn Shaybah.

لَكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ دَعَاكَ قَالَ إِنِّي نَسِيتُ أَنْ آمُرَكَ أَنْ تُخَمِّرَ الْقَرْنَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ شَىْءٌ يَشْغَلُ الْمُصَلِّيَ قَالَ ابْنُ السَّرْحِ خَالِي مُسَافِعُ بْنُ شَيْبَةَ

[AI] A woman from the tribe of Sulaym informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to Uthman ibn Talhah and said, "A woman asked Uthman ibn Talhah: 'Why did the Prophet ﷺ invite you?' He replied, 'When I entered the house, I saw the two horns of a ram, and I forgot to tell you to cover them. Cover them, for there should not be anything in the house that distracts the one who is praying.'" Sufyan said, "The two horns of the ram remained in the house until the house burned down and they burned with it."

أَخْبَرَتْنِي امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ وَلَدَتْ عَامَّةَ أَهْلِ دَارِنَا أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً إِنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ طَلْحَةَ لِمَ دَعَاكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ؟ قَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ رَأَيْتُ قَرْنَيِ الْكَبْشِ حِينَ دَخَلْتُ الْبَيْتَ فَنَسِيتُ أَنْ آمُرَكَ أَنْ تُخَمِّرَهُمَا فَخَمِّرْهُمَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ شَيْءٌ يَشْغَلُ الْمُصَلِّيَ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ لَمْ تَزَلْ قَرْنَا الْكَبْشِ فِي الْبَيْتِ حَتَّى احْتَرَقَ الْبَيْتُ فَاحْتَرَقَا

[AI] A woman from the Banu Sulaim told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to Uthman ibn Talhah and said, "She asked Uthman, 'Why did the Prophet ﷺ call you?' He said, 'I had seen the horns of the ram when I entered the house but forgot to tell you to tie them up. So go and tie them up, as there should not be anything in the house that distracts the worshipper.' Sufyan said, 'The horns of the ram remained in the house until the house burned down, and they burned with it.'

[AI] I asked Uthman, "Why didn't the Prophet ﷺ send a message to you after he left the Kaaba?" He replied, "He told me, 'I saw the horns of the ram and forgot to instruct you to cover them, as it is not appropriate for something to distract someone who is praying in the house.'"

سَأَلْتُ عُثْمَانَ لِمَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَعْدَ خُرُوجِهِ مِنَ الْكَعْبَةِ؟ فَقَالَ قَالَ لِي «رَأَيْتُ قَرْنَيِ الْكَبْشِ فَنَسِيتُ أَنْ آمُرَكَ أَنْ تُخَمِّرَهُمَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ شَيْءٌ يَشْغَلُ مُصَلِّيًا»

[AI] A woman from the tribe of Sulaym informed me that she had given birth to a child from among the people of our household. She said that the Prophet ﷺ sent a message to Uthman ibn Talhah and said, "I saw the two horns of a ram when I entered the house, and I forgot to command you to slaughter them. It is not appropriate for there to be anything in the house that distracts the one who is praying."

أَخْبَرَتْنِي امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ وَلَدَتْ عَامَّةَ أَهْلِ دَارِنَا قَالَتْ أَرْسَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ قَرْنَيِ الْكَبْشِ حِينَ دَخَلْتُ الْبَيْتَ فَنَسِيتُ أَنْ آمُرَكَ تُخَمِّرُهُمَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ مَا يَشْغَلُ مُصَلِّيًا

"إِنِّى نسيتُ أَن آمُركَ أَن تخمرَ القرنين فإنَّهُ ليس ينبغى أَنْ يكون في البيتِ شئٌ يَشْغَلُ المصلِّى" .
