Muhajir came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was urinating. He saluted him. The Prophet ﷺ did not return the salutation to him until he performed ablution. He then apologised to him, saying: I disliked remembering Allah except in the state of purification.

أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَبُولُ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى تَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ اعْتَذَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَ اللَّهَ ﷻ إِلاَّ عَلَى طُهْرٍ أَوْ قَالَ عَلَى طَهَارَةٍ

[AI] About a man who greeted him while he was not in a state of ritual purity. So he (the Prophet) said: Sa'eed narrated to us from Qatadah from Al-Hasan from Al-Hudhayn, the father of Sasanah, from Al-Muhajir bin Qunfudh that he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was performing ablution, and he did not respond to him until he completed his ablution. Then he responded to him and said: "I did not hesitate to respond to you except that I disliked mentioning Allah except in a state of purity."

عَنْ رَجُلٍ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ غَيْرُ مُتَوَضِّئٍ؟ فَقَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنِ الْحُضَيْنِ أَبِي سَاسَانَ عَنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ بْنِ قُنْفُذٍ أَنَّهُ سَلَّمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى تَوَضَّأَ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَ اللهَ إِلَّا عَلَى طَهَارَةٍ

[AI] I greeted the Prophet ﷺ while he was performing ablution, but he did not respond. When he finished his ablution, he said, "I did not respond to you only because I was not in a state of ablution."

سَلَّمْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ وُضُوئِهِ قَالَ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي كُنْتُ عَلَى غَيْرِ وُضُوءٍ

[AI] Juda'an reported that he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was performing ablution but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not reply to him. When he finished his ablution, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I did not respond to you because I disliked mentioning Allah except in a state of purity."

جُدْعَانَأَنَّهُ سَلَّمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ وُضُوئِهِ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَ اللهَ إِلَّا عَلَى طَهَارَةٍ

[AI] "I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was performing ablution, so I greeted him, but he did not respond to me. When he finished, he responded to me and apologized, saying, 'It was not that I did not want to respond to you, but I disliked mentioning Allah, the Almighty, while I was not in a state of ritual purity.'"

«مَرَرْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ» فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَدَّهُ عَلَيَّ وَاعْتَذَرَ إِلَيَّ وَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ ﷻ وَأَنَا عَلَى غَيْرِ طَهَارَةٍ»

مَرَرْتُ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَلَّمْتُ وَهُوَ يَتَوَضَّأُ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَدَّ عَلَيَّ واعْتَذَرَ إِلَيَّ وَقَالَ «إِنْهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرُدَّ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا أَنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَ اللهَ وَأَنَا عَلَى غَيْرِ طَهَارَةٍ»
