Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to my father and we brought to him a meal and a preparation from dates, cheese and butter. He ate out of that. He was then given dates which he ate, putting the stones between his fingers and holding his forefinger and middle finger together" - Shu'bah said: "I think we learn from this that one may hold the date stones between two fingers, In shaAllah." Then a drink was brought for him and he drank it, and then gave it to one who was on his right side. He (the narrator) said: My father took hold of the rein of his riding animal and requested him to supplicate for us. Thereupon he said: O Allah. bless them in what You have provided them as a sustenance; and forgive them and have mercy upon them.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to my father and he was a guest with him. He offered food to him and brought hais. He then brought a drink which he drank and he gave it to the one on his right. He ate dried dates and began to put the kernels on the back of his ring finger and middle finger. When he got up, my father also got up, and held the rein of his mount. He said : Pray to Allah for me. He said : O Allah, bless them in what you provided them, and have mercy on them.

جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَبِي فَنَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَدَّمَ إِلَيْهِ طَعَامًا فَذَكَرَ حَيْسًا أَتَاهُ بِهِ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ بِشَرَابٍ فَشَرِبَ فَنَاوَلَ مَنْ عَلَى يَمِينِهِ وَأَكَلَ تَمْرًا فَجَعَلَ يُلْقِي النَّوَى عَلَى ظَهْرِ أُصْبَعَيْهِ السَّبَّابَةِ وَالْوُسْطَى فَلَمَّا قَامَ قَامَ أَبِي فَأَخَذَ بِلِجَامِ دَابَّتِهِ فَقَالَ ادْعُ اللَّهَ لِي فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِيمَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with my father.” So he said: “We brought some food near him, so he ate from it, then he was brought dates, so he would eat it and cast the pit with his two fingers” - he joined between his forefinger and middle finger - Shuʿbah said: “And that is what I think concerning it, if Allah wills.” - “and he cast the pit between two fingers, then he was brought drink, so he drank it and then passed it to the one on his right.” He said: “So my father said - as he took hold of the rein of his beast: ‘Supplicate for us.’ So he said: ‘O Allah, bless for them what You have provided them, and forgive them, and have mercy on them (Allāhumma bārik lahum fī mā razaqtahum waghfir lahum warḥamhum).’”

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended, and they mentioned a riba and food and drink. So he ate dates and placed the pits on the back of his two fingers, then he threw them away. Then he stood up and rode a white mule. I took hold of its reins and said, "O Prophet of Allah, supplicate to Allah for us." He said, "O Allah, bless them in what You have provided for them and forgive them and have mercy on them."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended upon Abu, or Abu said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Descend upon me." So he descended upon him. He brought him food or barley. Abu said (to the Messenger of Allah), "Eat." So he ate. Then he brought him a drink. He said, "Drink." So he drank. Then he gave it to someone on his right. Abu Shuraih described that he put the date between his index and middle fingers and then threw it. Abu said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for us." So he said, "O Allah, bless them in what You have provided for them, and forgive them and have mercy on them."

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Abu who was riding a white mule. The Messenger took hold of its reins and said, "Get off with me, O Messenger of Allah." So he dismounted and said, "Bring them some hay." They brought hay and they ate it. Then they brought dates. The Prophet ﷺ started eating and saying, "Like this" while turning it over and putting one end of it between his fingers. Then they brought him a drink and he drank from it. Then he passed it on to the one on his right. Then he said, "O Allah, bless them in what You have provided for them, forgive them, and have mercy on them."

قَالَ مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِأَبِي وَهُوَ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ بَيْضَاءَ فَأَخَذَ بِلِجَامِهَا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ تَنْزِلُ عِنْدَنَا فَنَزَلَ عِنْدَهُ فَجَاءَهُ بِحَيْسٍ فَأَكَلَ ثُمَّ جَاءَهُ بِتَمْرٍ فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَأْكُلُ وَيَقُولُ بِالنَّوَى هَكَذَا وَضَمَّ شُعْبَةُ أُصْبُعَيْهِ قَالَ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِشَرَابٍ فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَ الَّذِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِيمَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ قَالَ نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِنَحْوِهِ

قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَلْقَتْ لَهُ أُمِّي قَطِيفَةً فَجَلَسَ عَلَيْهَا وَأَتَتْهُ بِتَمْرٍ فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ وَيَقُولُ بِالنَّوَى هَكَذَا وَوَصَفَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُلْقِيهِ مِنْ فِيهِ عَلَى ظَهْرِ أُصْبُعَيْهِ الْوُسْطَى وَالسَّبَّابَةِ ثُمَّ يُقَلِّبُ السَّبَّابَةَ عَلَى الْوُسْطَى فَيَرْمِي بِالنَّوَاةِ مِنْ أَعْلَاهَا ثُمَّ دَعَا بِشَرَابٍ فَشَرِبَ وَنَاوَلَ الَّذِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِيمَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

[AI] I heard Abdullah bin Busrah say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited my father, so my mother brought food to him and he ate it. Then dates were brought to him, and he ate them while saying the following words: "Like this," and he joined his index and middle fingers together and threw the dates pits. Then a drink was brought to him and he drank from it. After that, he passed it to the person on his right, and said, "Oh Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for us." He said, "Oh Allah, bless them, provide for them, forgive them, and have mercy on them." [118] 10052

Amr bin Yazeed Abu Burayd told us that Bahz bin Asad told us that Shu'bah told us that Yazid bin Khumayr told me that he heard Abdullah bin Busrah say something similar.

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ بُسْرٍ يَقُولُ نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى أَبِي فَقَرَّبَتْ أُمِّي طَعَامًا إِلَيْهِ فَأَكَلَهُ ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِتَمْرٍ فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ وَيَقُولُ بِالنَّوَى هَكَذَا وَجَمَعَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ أُصْبُعَيْهِ السَّبَّابَةَ وَالْوُسْطَى فَقَلَبَهَا يُلْقِي النَّوَى ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِشَرَابٍ فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ الَّذِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَقَالَ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ادْعُ اللهَ لَنَا فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فَارْزُقْهُمْ فَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَارْحَمْهُمْ» [118] 10052 أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ يَزِيْدَ أَبُو بُرَيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزُ بْنُ أَسَدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ خُمَيْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ بُسْرٍ نَحْوَهُ

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by his father while riding a white mule, so he went to him and took hold of its reins. He said, "Dismount." He wanted to go or to set out, so he said, "Supplicate for us." So he said, "O Allah! Bless them in what You have provided for them, forgive them, and have mercy on them."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِأَبِيهِ وَهُوَ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ لَهُ بَيْضَاءَ فَأَتَاهُ فَأَخَذَ بِلِجَامِهَا فَقَالَ انْزِلْ عَلَيَّ قَالَ فَنَزَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَأَتَى بِتَمْرٍ وَسَوِيقٍ فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ يَضَعُ النوَى عَلَى ظَهْرِ السَّبَّابَةِ أَوِ الْوُسْطَى أَوْ عَلَيْهِمَا جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يَرْمِي بِهِ قَالَ وَصُنِعَ لَهُ طَعَامٌ فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ لَبَنٍ أَوْ سَوِيقٍ فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ أَعْطَاهُ الَّذِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَسِيرَ أَوْ يَرْتَحِلَ فَقَالَ ادْعُ لَنَا فَقَالَ اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِيمَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ
