Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us towards Al-Huruqa, and in the morning we attacked them and defeated them. I and an Ansari man followed a man from among them and when we took him over, he said, "La ilaha illal-Lah." On hearing that, the Ansari man stopped, but I killed him by stabbing him with my spear. When we returned, the Prophet ﷺ came to know about that and he said, "O Usama! Did you kill him after he had said "La ilaha ilal-Lah?" I said, "But he said so only to save himself." The Prophet ﷺ kept on repeating that so often that I wished I had not embraced Islam before that day.

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْحُرَقَةِ فَصَبَّحْنَا الْقَوْمَ فَهَزَمْنَاهُمْ وَلَحِقْتُ أَنَا وَرَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ رَجُلاً مِنْهُمْ فَلَمَّا غَشِينَاهُ قَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ فَكَفَّ الأَنْصَارِيُّ فَطَعَنْتُهُ بِرُمْحِي حَتَّى قَتَلْتُهُ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا بَلَغَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا أُسَامَةُ أَقَتَلْتَهُ بَعْدَ مَا قَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ قُلْتُ كَانَ مُتَعَوِّذًا فَمَا زَالَ يُكَرِّرُهَا حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَسْلَمْتُ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us (to fight) against Al-Huraqa (one of the sub-tribes) of Juhaina. We reached those people in the morning and defeated them. A man from the Ansar and I chased one of their men and when we attacked him, he said, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah." The Ansari refrained from killing him but I stabbed him with my spear till I killed him. When we reached (Medina), this news reached the Prophet. He said to me, "O Usama! You killed him after he had said, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah?"' I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He said so in order to save himself." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You killed him after he had said, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah." The Prophet ﷺ kept on repeating that statement till I wished I had not been a Muslim before that day.

There is no god but Allah, I attacked him with a spear. It once occurred to me and I talked about it to the Apostle ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Did he profess" There is no god but Allah," and even then you killed him? I said: Messenger of Allah, he made a profession of it out of the fear of the weapon. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Did you tear his heart in order to find out whether it had professed or not? And he went on repeating it to me till I wished I had embraced Islam that day. Sa'd said: By Allah, I would never kill any Muslim so long as a person with a heavy belly, i. e., Usama, would not kill. Upon this a person remarked: Did Allah not say this: And fight them until there is no more mischief and religion is wholly for Allah? Sa'd said: We fought so that there should be no mischief, but you and your companions wish to fight so that there should be mischief.

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ فَصَبَّحْنَا الْحُرَقَاتِ مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ فَأَدْرَكْتُ رَجُلاً فَقَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ فَطَعَنْتُهُ فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَقَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَقَتَلْتَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا خَوْفًا مِنَ السِّلاَحِ قَالَ أَفَلاَ شَقَقْتَ عَنْ قَلْبِهِ حَتَّى تَعْلَمَ أَقَالَهَا أَمْ لاَ فَمَازَالَ يُكَرِّرُهَا عَلَىَّ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ وَأَنَا وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَقْتُلُ مُسْلِمًا حَتَّى يَقْتُلَهُ ذُو الْبُطَيْنِ يَعْنِي أُسَامَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ أَلَمْ يَقُلِ اللَّهُ { وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّى لاَ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلَّهِ} فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ قَدْ قَاتَلْنَا حَتَّى لاَ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَأَنْتَ وَأَصْحَابُكَ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تُقَاتِلُوا حَتَّى تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ

The Messenger of Allah may peace be upon him) sent us to Huraqat, a tribe of Juhaina. We attacked that tribe early in the morning and defeated them and I and a man from the Ansar caught hold of a person (of the defeated tribe). When we overcame him, he said: There is no god but Allah. At that moment the Ansari spared him, but I attacked him with my spear and killed him. The news had already reached the Apostle (peace be upon him), so when we came back he (the Apostle) said to me: Usama, did you kill him after he had made the profession: There is no god but Allah? I said. Messenger of Allah, he did it only as a shelter. The Prophet observed: Did you kill him after he had made the profession that there is no god but Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) went on repeating this to me till I wished I had not embraced Islam before that day.

Usamah bin Zaid said “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us with a detachment to Al Huruqat. They learnt about us and fled away. But we found a man, when we attacked him he uttered “There is no god but Allaah, still we struck him till we killed him.” When I mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ he said “Who will save you from “There is no god but Allaah” on the Day of Judgment? I said “Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he uttered it for the fear of the weapon.” He said “Did you tear his heart so that you learnt whether he actually uttered it for this or not. Who will support you against “There is no god but Allaah”? He kept on repeating this till I wished I would have embraced Islam on that day.

[AI] We sent the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Al-Hurqah from the tribe of Juheinah. He said, "We attacked them in the morning and fought against them. Among them was a man who, when the enemy approached, was the bravest among them against us. But when they turned their backs, he became their protector." He said, "I and a man from the Ansar overwhelmed him." When we overwhelmed him, he said, "There is no god but Allah." The Ansari hesitated and I killed him. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed about this, he said, "O Usama! Did you kill him after he said, 'There is no god but Allah'?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He only said it to protect himself from being killed." The Prophet ﷺ repeated, "Did you kill him after he said, 'There is no god but Allah'?" I said it again, "O Messenger of Allah! He only said it to protect himself from being killed."

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي جَيْشِ الْحُرُقَاتِ فَلَمَّا هَزَمْنَاهُمْ انْتَدَبْتُ أَنَا وَرَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَكَفَّ عَنْهُ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ وَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّمَا قَالَهَا ؛ تَعَوُّذًا فَقَتَلْتُهُ فَرَفَعَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ يَا أُسَامَةُ أَقَتَلْتَهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ؟ فَكَيْفَ تَصْنَعُ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ؟ فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَسْلَمْتُ إِلَّا يَوْمَئِذٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us to the Haruqat area of Juheyna. We reached them in the morning while they were warned about us. We caught up with them and I encountered a man who, whenever I got close to him, said "There is no god but Allah." I thought he was saying it to protect himself from harm, so I attacked him and killed him. However, I felt uneasy about killing him. I went to the Prophet ﷺ and he asked me, "Did you say 'There is no god but Allah' before killing him?" I replied, "No, he did not say it himself. He only said it to protect himself from harm." The Prophet ﷺ then asked me, "Did you kill him after he said, 'There is no god but Allah'?" I said, "Yes, but I wish I had not accepted Islam until that day."

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْحُرُقَاتِ مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ فَصَبَّحْنَاهُمْ وَقَدْ نُذِرُوا بِنَا فَخَرَجْنَا فِي آثَارِهِمْ فَأَدْرَكْتُ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلًا فَجَعَلَ إِذَا لَحِقْتُهُ قَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ يَقُولُهَا فَرَقًا مِنَ السِّلَاحِ فَحَمَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَتَلْتُهُ فَعَرَضَ فِي نَفْسِي مِنْ قَتْلِهِ شَيْءٌ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ» قَالَ لِي أَقَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ثُمَّ قَتَلْتَهُ؟» قُلْتُ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْهَا مِنْ قَبَلِ نَفْسِهِ إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا فَرَقًا مِنَ السِّلَاحِ قَالَ لِي أَقَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ثُمَّ قَتَلْتَهُ فَهَلَّا شَقَقْتَ عَنْ قَلْبِهِ حَتَّى تَعْلَمَ أَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا فَرَقًا مِنَ السِّلَاحِ؟» قَالَ أُسَامَةُ فَمَا زَالَ يُكَرِّرُهَا عَلَيَّ أَقَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ثُمَّ قَتَلْتَهُ حَتَّى وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَسْلَمْتُ إِلَّا يَوْمَئِذٍ»

When we were about to defeat them, a man from the Ansar (helpers) and I approached a man from them and he said, "There is no god but Allah." The Ansari stopped attacking him, and I thought that he said it to seek refuge, so I killed him. The Ansari then returned to the Prophet and informed him about it. The Prophet said to Osama, "O Osama, did you kill him after he said, 'There is no god but Allah'? How will you then deal with 'There is no god but Allah' on the Day of Judgment?" He kept repeating these words until I wished that I had not embraced Islam before that day.

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي جَيْشٍ إِلَى الْحُرُقَاتِ حَيٍّ مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ فَلَمَّا يَعْنِي هَزَمْنَاهُمِ ابْتَدَرْتُ أَنَا وَرَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَكَفَّ عَنْهُ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ وَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا تَعَوُّذًا فَقَتَلْتُهُ فَرَجَعَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَحَدَّثَهُ الْحَدِيثَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَا أُسَامَةُ قَتَلْتَ رَجُلًا بَعْدَ أَنْ قَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ كَيْفَ تَصْنَعُ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ؟» فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَسْلَمْتُ إِلَّا يَوْمَئِذٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition to Al-Hurqat, but the enemy detected us and fled. We managed to catch one man, and when we surrounded him, he said, "There is no god but Allah." However, we still killed him. I felt disturbed by this incident, so I mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He asked me, "Who had the authority to say 'There is no god but Allah' on the Day of Judgment?" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah, he only said it out of fear of the weapons and death." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why didn't you open his heart to find out if he said it sincerely or not?" Thus, he repeated the question, "Who had the authority to say 'There is no god but Allah' on the Day of Judgment?" And he continued to repeat this phrase until I wished that I had not accepted Islam until that day. Then, Abu Thubyan said that Saad (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah, I will not kill him until he kills Osama, who is holding the flag." A man said, "Hasn't Allah said: 'Fight them until there is no fitnah (trial, disbelief)'"? Saad replied, "We fought so that there would be no fitnah, but you and your companions want us to fight until it becomes a fitnah."

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً إِلَى الْحُرَقَاتِ فَنَذِرُوا بِنَا فَهَرَبُوا فَأَدْرَكْنَا رَجُلًا فَلَمَّا غَشِينَاهُ قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَضَرَبْنَاهُ حَتَّى قَتَلْنَاهُ فَعَرَضَ فِي نَفْسِي شَيْءٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَنْ لَكَ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا مَخَافَةَ السِّلَاحِ وَالْقَتْلِ فَقَالَ أَفَلَا شَقَقْتَ عَنْ قَلْبِهِ حَتَّى تَعْلَمَ قَالَهَا مِنْ أَجْلِ ذَلِكَ أَمْ لَا؟ مَنْ لَكَ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُ حَتَّى وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أُسْلِمْ إِلَّا يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ أَبُو ظَبْيَانَ قَالَ سَعْدٌ وَأَنَا وَاللهِ لَا أَقْتُلُهُ حَتَّى يَقْتُلَهُ ذُو الْبُطَيْنِ يَعْنِي أُسَامَةَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ قَالَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى {قَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّى لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ} [البقرة 193] فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ قَاتَلْنَا حَتَّى لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَأَنْتَ وَأَصْحَابُكَ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ نُقَاتِلَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ

[AI] We sent the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition to Al-Hurqat. The enemy noticed us and fled, but we caught one of their men. When we covered him, he said, "There is no god but Allah." However, we still killed him. I felt doubtful about this incident, so I mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He asked, "Who will testify for you on the Day of Judgment that there is no god but Allah?" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah, he only said it out of fear of the sword and death." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Why didn't you tear open his heart to make sure?" I said, "Was it necessary for me to do that, O Messenger of Allah?" He asked, "Did you ever hear him say it for any other reason?" I replied, "No, by Allah. He kept repeating it until I wished I had never embraced Islam before that day." Abu Thubyan said, "I swear by Allah, I will not kill him until he is killed by Usama, who is called Dhu-l-Batayn." A man asked, "Didn't Allah say, 'Fight them until there is no more fitnah'?" Saad replied, "We have fought them until there is no more fitnah, and now you and your companions want us to continue fighting until there is fitnah again?"

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition to Al-Huraqat, but they fled upon reaching it. We caught up with a man and when we surrounded him, he said, "There is no god but Allah." However, we continued to strike him until we killed him. This troubled me deeply, so I mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Who would be responsible for you saying 'There is no god but Allah' on the Day of Judgment?" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I only said it out of fear of the weapon and death." He said, "Couldn't you have opened up his heart to ascertain why he said it, whether he truly believed or not?" Then he asked again, "Who would be responsible for you saying 'There is no god but Allah' on the Day of Judgment?" I continued to say it until I wished that I had not embraced Islam until that day. Abu Thabit said, "Sa'd swore, 'By Allah, I will not kill him until Dhu'l-Batyn (Usamah) kills him.' " A man said, "Hasn't Allah said, 'Fight against them until there is no more fitnah [disbelief and polytheism]...'" (2:193) Sa'd replied, "We have fought until there is no more fitnah, but you and your companions want to fight until there is fitnah."
