Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us when his daughter died and said, "Wash her thrice or five times or more, if you see it necessary, with water and Sidr and then apply camphor or some camphor at the end; and when you finish, notify me." So when we finished it, we informed him and he gave us his waist-sheet and told us to shroud the dead body in it.

عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الأَنْصَارِيَّةِ ؓ قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَتُهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مَنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حِقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ تَعْنِي إِزَارَهُ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and we were giving a bath to his (dead) daughter and said, "Wash her three, five or more times with water and Sidr and sprinkle camphor on her at the end; and when you finish, notify me." So when we finished, we informed him and he gave us his waist-sheet and told us to shroud her in it. Aiyub said that Hafsa narrated to him a narration similar to that of Muhammad in which it was said that the bath was to be given for an odd number of times, and the numbers 3, 5 or 7 were mentioned. It was also said that they were to start with the right side and with the parts which were washed in ablution, and that Um 'Atiyya also mentioned, "We combed her hair and divided them in three braids."

دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَ أَيُّوبُ وَحَدَّثَتْنِي حَفْصَةُ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَكَانَ فِي حَدِيثِ حَفْصَةَ اغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا وَكَانَ فِيهِ ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا وَكَانَ فِيهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ابْدَأْنَ بِمَيَامِنِهَا وَمَوَاضِعِ الْوُضُوءِ مِنْهَا وَكَانَ فِيهِ أَنَّ أُمَّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ وَمَشَطْنَاهَا ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُونٍ

The daughter of the Prophet ﷺ expired, and he said to us, "Wash her three or five times, or more if you see it necessary, and when you finish, notify me." So, (when we finished) we informed him and he unfastened his waist-sheet and told us to shroud her in it.

تُوُفِّيَتْ بِنْتُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَنَا اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَنَزَعَ مِنْ حِقْوِهِ إِزَارَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

Um 'Atiyya said, "One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ died and he came out and said, 'Wash her three or five times or more, if you think it necessary, with water and Sidr, and last of all put camphor (or some camphor) and when you finish, inform me.' " Um Atiyya added, "When we finished we informed him and he gave us his waist-sheet and said, 'Shroud her in it.' " And Um 'Atiyya (in another narration) added, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Wash her three, five or seven times or more, if you think it necessary.' " Hafsa said that Um 'Atiyya had also said, "We entwined her hair into three braids."

تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ وَعَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ حَفْصَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ ؓ بِنَحْوِهِ وَقَالَتْ إِنَّهُ قَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ قَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ قَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ ؓ وَجَعَلْنَا رَأْسَهَا ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُونٍ

Um 'Atiyya (an Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ ) came to Basra to visit her son, but she could not find him. She narrated to us, "The Prophet ﷺ came to us while we were giving bath to his (dead) daughter, he said: 'Wash her three times, five times or more, if you think it necessary, with water and Sidr, and last of all put camphor, and when you finish, notify me.' " Um 'Atiyya added, "After finishing, we informed him and he gave us his waist sheet and told us to shroud her in it and did not say more than that."

بَايَعْنَ قَدِمَتِ الْبِصْرَةَ تُبَادِرُ ابْنًا لَهَا فَلَمْ تُدْرِكْهُ فَحَدَّثَتْنَا قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا أَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَلاَ أَدْرِي أَىُّ بَنَاتِهِ وَزَعَمَ أَنَّ الإِشْعَارَ الْفُفْنَهَا فِيهِ وَكَذَلِكَ كَانَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تُشْعَرَ وَلاَ تُؤْزَرَ

One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ expired and he came to us and said, "Wash her with Sidr (water) for odd number of times, i.e. three, five or more, if you think it necessary, and in the last, put camphor or (some camphor on her), and when you finish, notify me." So when we finished we informed him. He gave his waist-sheet to us (to shroud her). We entwined the hair (of the deceased girl) in three braids and made them fall at her back.

تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَتَانَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا بِالسِّدْرِ وِتْرًا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ فَضَفَرْنَا شَعَرَهَا ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُونٍ وَأَلْقَيْنَاهَا خَلْفَهَا

The Apostle of Allah ﷺ came to us when we were bathing his daughter, and he told us: Wash her with water and (with the leaves of) the lote tree, three or five times, or more than that if you think fit, and put camphor or something like camphor in the last washing; then inform me when you have finished. So when we had finished, we informed him, and he gave to us his (own) under-garment saying:" Put it next her body."

دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

" three times, five times, seven times, or more than that, if you deem fit:" Hafsa (further) said on the authority of Umm 'Atiyya: We braided (the hair) of her head in three plaits.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ فَقَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ وَجَعَلْنَا رَأْسَهَا ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُونٍ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in when his daughter died, and he said: Wash her with water and lotus leaves three or five times or more than that if you think fit, and put camphor, or some camphor in the last washing, then inform me when you finish. When we had finished we informed him, and he threw us his lower garment saying: Put it next to her body. Malik's version has: that is, his lower garment (izar); and Musaddad did not say: He entered in.

دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَتُهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَ عَنْ مَالِكٍ يَعْنِي إِزَارَهُ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ مُسَدَّدٌ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا

"The Messenger of Allah entered upon us when his daughter died, and said: 'Wash her three times or five, or more if you think (that is needed), with water and lote leaves, and put some camphor in it the last time, and when you have finished call me.' When we finished we called him and he gave us his waist-wrap, and said: 'Shroud her in it."'

دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَتُهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

"One of the daughters of the Prophet died, and he sent word to us saying: 'Wash her with water and lotus leaves, and wash her an odd number of times, three, or five, or seven if you think (that is needed), and put some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we finished, we informed him, and he threw his informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it.' And we combed her hair and put it in three braids, and put it behind her."

مَاتَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وَتْرًا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ وَمَشَطْنَاهَا ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُونٍ وَأَلْقَيْنَاهَا مِنْ خَلْفِهَا

"The Messenger of Allah entered upon us when we were washing his daughter and said: 'Wash her three times or five, or more if you think (that is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it."'

"The Messenger of Allah entered upon us while we were washing his daughter and said: 'Wash her three times, or five or more if you think (that is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us, and said: Shroud her in it."

"Three times or five, or seven, or more than that, if you think that (is necessary)."

أَنَّهُ قَالَ ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ

"A daughter of the Messenger of Allah died and he told us to wash her. He said: 'Three times, or five or seven, or more than that, if you think that (is necessary).' I said: 'An odd number?' He said: 'Yes, and put camphor, or some camphor, in (the water) the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' So when you have finished, we informed him, and then gave us his waist-wrap and said: 'Shroud her in it."

تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةٌ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَمَرَنَا بِغَسْلِهَا فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ وِتْرًا قَالَ نَعَمْ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

"The Messenger of Allah came to us when we were washing his daughter. He said: 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in (the water) the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we informed him and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it."' He said: "Hafsah said: 'We washed her three, or five, or seven times.' Umm 'Atiyyah said: 'We combed her hair into three braids."'

أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَ أَوْ قَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا قَالَ وَقَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ مَشَطْنَاهَا ثَلاَثَةَ قُرُونٍ

"Umm 'Atiyyah was a woman from among the Ansar who told us: 'The Prophet entered upon us while we were washing his daughter and said: "Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me." So when we finished we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: "Shroud her in it." And he did not add to that. He (the narrator) said: "I do not know which of his daughters that was." I said: "What did he mean by: 'Shroud her in it?' Did he mean to put it on like an Izar?" He said: "No, I think he meant to wrap her completely."

دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا أَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ قَالَ لاَ أَدْرِي أَىُّ بَنَاتِهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا قَوْلُهُ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ أَتُؤَزَّرُ بِهِ قَالَ لاَ أُرَاهُ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَقُولَ الْفُفْنَهَا فِيهِ

"One of the daughters of the Prophet died and he said: 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary). Wash her with water and lotus leaves and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished inform me.' We informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said: 'Shroud her in it."'

تُوُفِّيَ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا بِالسِّدْرِ وَالْمَاءِ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي آخِرِ ذَلِكِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَآذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us when we were washing his daughter Umm Kulthum. He said: ‘Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you think you need to, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor or a little camphor in (the water) for the last washing. When you have finished, call for me.’ When we finished, we called him, and he gave his waist-wrapper to us and said: ‘Shroud her with it.’”

دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نُغَسِّلُ ابْنَتَهُ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكِ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكِ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

"The Messenger of Allah came to us when we were washing his daughter. He said: 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in (the water) the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we informed him and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it."' أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَ وَقَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ قَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا قَالَ وَقَالَتْ أُمُّ عَطِيَّةَ مَشَطْنَاهَا ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us when we were washing his daughter Umm Kulthum. He said: ‘Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you think you need to, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor or a little camphor in (the water) for the last washing. When you have finished, call for me.’ When we finished, we called him, and he gave his waist-wrapper to us and said: ‘Shroud her with it.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1458)

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us when we were washing his daughter Umm Kulthum. He said: ‘Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you think you need to, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor or a little camphor in (the water) for the last washing. When you have finished, call for me.’ When we finished, we called him, and he gave his waist-wrapper to us and said: ‘Shroud her with it.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1458)

تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا بِسِدْرٍ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

"One of the daughters of the Prophet died, and he sent word to us saying: 'Wash her with water and lotus leaves, and wash her an odd number of times, three, or five, or seven if you think (that is needed), and put some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we finished, we informed him, and he threw his informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it.' And we combed her hair and put it in three braids, and put it behind her." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1885)

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ayyub ibn Abi Tamima as- Sakhtayani from Muhammad ibn Sirin that Umm Atiyya al-Ansariyya said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us when his daughter died and said, 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think it necessary, with water and lotus leaves, and at the end put on some camphor, or a little camphor, and when you have finished let me know.' When we finished we told him, and he gave us his waist-wrapper and said, 'Shroud her with this.' "

قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَتُهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلاَثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حِقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ تَعْنِي بِحِقْوِهِ إِزَارَهُ

"The Messenger of Allah came to us when we were washing his daughter. He said: 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in (the water) the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we informed him and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it."' He said: "Hafsah said: 'We washed her three, or five, or seven times.' Umm 'Atiyyah said: 'We combed her hair into three braids."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1890)

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us when we were washing his daughter Umm Kulthum. He said: ‘Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you think you need to, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor or a little camphor in (the water) for the last washing. تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةٌ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «اغْسِلْنَهَا بِالْمَاءِ وَالسِّدْرِ ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنَّ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي آخِرِهِنَّ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي» فَآذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ وَقَالَ «أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ»

[AI] Zainab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , passed away, so he said, "Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that, if you see the need, and wash her with water and sidr, and put some camphor in her burial shroud. When you have finished, inform me." So, when we had finished, we informed him, and he threw his garment to us and said, "Wrap her in it." She said, "We made three knots on her head and sent them from behind her." She said, "And the shroud was small."

تُوُفِّيَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلُوهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ قَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَتْ جَعَلْنَا رَأْسَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ وَأَرْسَلْنَاهُنَّ مِنْ خَلْفِهَا قَالَتْ وَالْحَقْوُ إِزَارٌ صَغِيرٌ

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi reported from Malik that Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi reported from Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam, who reported from Bakr ibn Sahl, who reported from Abdullah ibn Yusuf, who said: I am Malik ibn Anas, who reported from Ayyub ibn Abi Tamimah, who reported from Muhammad ibn Sirin, who reported from Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us when his daughter passed away. He said: Wash her three, five, or more times if you see that it is necessary, with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor or something made of camphor in the Hereafter. When you have finished, inform me. She said: So when we had finished, we informed him, and he gave his garment to us and said: Wrap her in it.

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ قَالَا أنا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتُ ابْنَتُهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ يَعْنِي إِزَارَهُ

[AI] The daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, so we gathered around her. We entered the room and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in on us and said, "Wash her three, five, or more than that, if you see fit, with water and sidr, and in the Hereafter, place camphor, or something made from camphor on her. When you are done, notify me." So, when we were finished, we informed him. He threw his own garment over her and said, "Put it on her."

تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَاجْتَمَعْنَا عِنْدَهَا فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِالْمَاءِ وَالسِّدْرِ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

[AI] One of the daughters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and said, "Wash her three or five or more times. If you see a need for it, use water and sidr and make camphor or something of camphor for her in the Hereafter. When you finish, give me a signal." When we finished, we signaled to him, and he threw his garment towards us and said, "Sprinkle it on her."

تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us when we were washing his daughter Umm Kulthum. He said: ‘Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you think you need to, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor or a little camphor in (the water) for the last washing. دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نُغَسَّلُ ابْنَتَهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

[AI] She said: "The daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has passed away." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Wash her with water and sidr three, five, or more times if you see the need, and put some camphor in the last washing. When you have finished, inform me so that I may come and offer funeral prayer for her." So we informed him, and he came and offered the funeral prayer for her, and said: "Say the same to him before you bury her."

أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ تُوُفِّيَتْ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اغْسِلُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ وَالسِّدْرِ ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ وَاجْعَلُوا فِي آخِرِهِنِّ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَآذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

[AI] One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ passed away, so he commanded us to wash her with water and sidr, and he said to wash her three or five times or more if we saw fit, and to place camphor or something of camphor at the end of the washes. When we finished, he gave us her shroud and said, "Cover her with it."

تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُغَسِّلَهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي آخِرِهِنَّ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

[AI] One of the daughters of the Prophet (PBUH) passed away, so the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Wash her with water and sidr, and wash her an odd number of times, either three or five. And if you think it necessary, increase it. And let the last washing be with camphor or something of camphor. Then inform me when you have completed this." He said, "I would like to be the one to wash her."

تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اغْسِلْنَهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا وَإِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ أَنْ تَزِدْنَ فَزِدْنَ وَلْيَكُنْ ذَلِكَ وِتْرًا وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي آخِرِهِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ ثُمَّ أَلْقَى لَنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

[AI] The Prophet's daughter died, so he said, "Wash her three, five, or more times if you see fit, using water and sidr (a type of plant), and put some camphor with her in the afterlife. When you have finished, inform me." When they had finished, they informed him, and he threw his garment over her and said, "Anoint her with it."

تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

[AI] The daughter of the Prophet ﷺ passed away, so he said, "Wash her with water and sidr (a type of plant) three times or five times or more, if you see fit, and put some camphor at the end of the washes. When you finish washing her, notify me." She said, "We notified him." So he threw his garment to us and said, "Wrap her in it." Ayyub said, "She said to wash her three times or five times or seven times and to put three handfuls of camphor for her."

تُوُفِّيَتْ بِنْتُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا بِالْمَاءِ وَالسِّدْرِ ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي آخِرِهِنَّ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَآذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَ أَيُّوبُ وَقَالَتْ بِقَصَّةٍ تَغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا وَاجْعَلْنَ لَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ

[AI] The daughter of the Prophet ﷺ passed away, so he entered upon us while we were washing her and he said, "Wash her three or five times, and when you are done, inform me." So, when we finished, we informed him and he threw his scarf towards us and said, "Cover her with it."

تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ نُغَسِّلُهَا فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ «

[AI] One of the daughters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, so the Prophet ﷺ came to us and said, "Wash her with sidr (a type of tree) and wash her odd number of times, three or five or more if you see fit, and put camphor on her in the hereafter. When you are done, let me know." She said, "When we were done, we informed him. Then he threw his garment to us and said, 'Cover her with it.' She said, 'We braided her hair into three braids on the back of her head.'"

تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَنَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا بِالسِّدْرِ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَتْ ضَفَّرْنَا رَأْسَهَا ثَلَاثَ قُرُونٍ نَاصِيَتَهَا وَقَرْنَهَا ثُمَّ أَلْقَيْنَاهُ خَلْفَهَا

[AI] Um Atiyyah Al-Ansariyyah's daughter died, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wash her with water and lotus leaves, and wash her odd number of times, three or five or more, if you see it fit. And in the Hereafter, put camphor on her or something from camphor. When you are finished, notify me and we informed him. He then threw his saliva onto her and said, "Anoint her with it." She said, "So we braided her hair in three braids, a front braid, and two side braids, and then threw it from behind her."

عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ تُوُفِّيَتْ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اغْسِلْنَهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَآذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَتْ فَضَفَّرْنَا رَأْسَهَا ثَلَاثَ قُرُونٍ مُقَدِّمَتِهَا وَقَرْنَيْهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَاهَا مِنِ خَلْفِهَا

[AI] When the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, he ﷺ said to us, "Wash her odd number of times, three or five, and in the Hereafter, make her have camphor or something from camphor. When you have washed her, inform me so that I may be informed." She said, "So he threw [some] water towards us and said, 'Sprinkle it on her.'"

لَمَّا مَاتَتْ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا غَسَلْتُنَّهَا فَأَعْلِمْنَنِي فَأَعْلَمْنَاهُ قَالَتْ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us when his daughter died and said, "Wash her thrice or five times or more, if you see it necessary, with water and Sidr and then apply camphor or some camphor at the end; and when you finish, notify me." So when we finished it, we informed him and he gave us his waist-sheet and told us to shroud the dead body in it. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1253)

دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَتُهُ فَقَالَ «اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي» فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حِقْوَهُ وَقَالَ «أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ»

"One of the daughters of the Prophet died, and he sent word to us saying: 'Wash her with water and lotus leaves, and wash her an odd number of times, three, or five, or seven if you think (that is needed), and put some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' When we finished, we finished, we informed him, and he threw his informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: 'Shroud her in it.' And we combed her hair and put it in three braids, and put it behind her." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1885)

مَاتَتِ احْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «اغْسِلْنَهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي» فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حِقْوَهُ وَقَالَ «أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ» قَالَتْ وَمَشَطْنَاهَا ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ وَأَلْقَيْنَاهَا خَلْفَهَا

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon us when we were washing his daughter Umm Kulthum. He said: ‘Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you think you need to, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor or a little camphor in (the water) for the last washing. When you have finished, call for me.’ When we finished, we called him, and he gave his waist-wrapper to us and said: ‘Shroud her with it.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1458)

أَنَّهُ قَالَ «ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ»

"A daughter of the Messenger of Allah died and he told us to wash her. He said: 'Three times, or five or seven, or more than that, if you think that (is necessary).' I said: 'An odd number?' He said: 'Yes, and put camphor, or some camphor, in (the water) the last time. And when you have finished, inform me.' So when you have finished, we informed him, and then gave us his waist-wrap and said: 'Shroud her in it." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1889)

"Umm 'Atiyyah was a woman from among the Ansar who told us: 'The Prophet entered upon us while we were washing his daughter and said: "Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary), with water and lotus leaves, and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished, inform me." So when we finished we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrap to us and said: "Shroud her in it." And he did not add to that. He (the narrator) said: "I do not know which of his daughters that was." I said: "What did he mean by: 'Shroud her in it?' Did he mean to put it on like an Izar?" He said: "No, I think he meant to wrap her completely." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1893)

"One of the daughters of the Prophet died and he said: 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary). Wash her with water and lotus leaves and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished inform me.' We informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said: 'Shroud her in it."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1894)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in when his daughter died, and he said: Wash her with water and lotus leaves three or five times or more than that if you think fit, and put camphor, or some camphor in the last washing, then inform me when you finish. When we had finished we informed him, and he threw us his lower garment saying: Put it next to her body. Malik's version has: that is, his lower garment (izar); and Musaddad did not say: He entered in. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3142)

Um 'Atiyya said, "One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ died and he came out and said, 'Wash her three or five times or more, if you think it necessary, with water and Sidr, and last of all put camphor (or some camphor) and when you finish, inform me.' " Um Atiyya added, "When we finished we informed him and he gave us his waist-sheet and said, 'Shroud her in it.' " And Um 'Atiyya (in another narration) added, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Wash her three, five or seven times or more, if you think it necessary.'
