Abu Bakr expressed humility when he was praised

suyuti:1-407bal-Aṣmaʿī

Abu Bakr, when praised, used to say: "O Allah, you know me better than myself, and I know myself better than them. O Allah, make me better than what they think of me, and forgive me for what they do not know, and do not hold me accountable for what they say."  

السيوطي:١-٤٠٧b"عن الأَصْمَعِى قَالَ

كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِذَا مُدِحَ قَالَ: (اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ مِنِّى بِنَفْسِى، وأَنَا أَعْلَمُ بِنَفْسِى مِنْهُمْ، اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِى خَيْرًا مِمَّا يَظُنُّونَ، واغْفِر لِى مَا لَا يَعْلمُونَ، وَلَا تُؤَاخِذْنِى بِمَا يَقُولُونَ)۔

[Machine] About a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the heart of this nation, and he had a virtue that whenever he was praised or commended, he would say, "O Allah, do not hold me accountable for what they say, and forgive me for what they do not know."  

الزهد لأحمد:١١٤٢حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ

عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ صَدْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ وَكَانَ لَهُ فَضْلٌ أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا أُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهِ أَوْ مُدِحَ فَسَمِعَ قَالَ (اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا يَقُولُونَ وَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ)۔
