Abu Bakr said, after praising and extolling Allah: O people, you recite this verse and place it other than in its proper context: "Be accountable to yourselves; those who have gone astray will not harm you if you are rightly guided.” (Maidah 5:105) Khalid said: And we heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "Indeed, when people see an oppressor and do not restrain him, Allah is about to envelope them all with a punishment."

And ‘Amr said, from Hushaym: And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "There is no people among whom acts of disobedience are committed, then they are able to change it but do not change it, except that Allah is about to envelope them because of it with a punishment."

قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بَعْدَ أَنْ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ وَتَضَعُونَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ مَوَاضِعِهَا { عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لاَ يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ }، قَالَ عَنْ خَالِدٍ، وَإِنَّا سَمِعْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوُا الظَّالِمَ فَلَمْ يَأْخُذُوا عَلَى يَدَيْهِ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابٍ»، 

وَقَالَ عَمْرٌو عَنْ هُشَيْمٍ وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «مَا مِنْ قَوْمٍ يُعْمَلُ فِيهِمْ بِالْمَعَاصِي ثُمَّ يَقْدِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْ يُغَيِّرُوا ثُمَّ لاَ يُغَيِّرُوا إِلاَّ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ بِعِقَابٍ».

"O you people! You recite this Ayah: Take care of yourselves! If you follow the guidance no harm shall come to you. I indeed heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'When the people see the wrongdoer and they do not take him by the hand, then soon Allah shall envelope you in a punishment from him.'"

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ (يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لاَ يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ ) وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوُا الظَّالِمَ فَلَمْ يَأْخُذُوا عَلَى يَدَيْهِ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابٍ مِنْهُ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ نَحْوَهُ

"O you people! You recite this Ayah: Take care of yourselves! If you follow the guidance no harm shall come to you from those who are astray (5:105). “Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: ‘O people, you recite this Verse – “O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the (right) guidance no hurt can come to you from those who are in error.”[5:105] – but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘If people see some evil but do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.’” (One of the narrators) Abu Usamah repeated: "Indeed I heard that Messenger of Allah ﷺ say."

Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: O people, you recite this verse: “O you who believe! Take care of your ownselves. If you follow the (right) guidance...” [al-Ma'idah 5:105], but you do not interpret it properly. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “If the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.ʿ He (Qais] said: I heard Abu Bakr say: O people, beware of lying for lying is contrary to faith.

Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said:O people, you recite this verse: ʿO you who believe! Take care of your ownselves...ʿ (al-Ma’idah 5:105] until he reached the end of the verse. But if the people see an evildoer and do not stop him, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all. يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ وَتَضَعُونَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا وَضَعَهَا اللهُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ} سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوْا الْمُنْكَرَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَلَمْ يُنْكِرُوهُ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللهُ بِعِقَابِِ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu 'Amir, "Did you not change?" So he recited this verse, "O you who have believed, take care of yourselves. He who has gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided" [Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 105]. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said, "Where did you go? Indeed, it is for you, O you who have believed, that he who has gone astray from the disbelievers will not harm you when you have been guided."

And Hushaym narrated from Ismail with an addition, except that he said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whenever a nation tolerates sins being committed among them, despite having the power to change it, then they are close to being afflicted by the punishment of Allah.' Abu Ali Al-Rudhbari narrated from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Mahrawayh ibn Abbas ibn Sinan Al-Razi, who narrated from Abu Hatim Al-Razi, who narrated from Amr ibn Awn Al-Wasiti, who narrated from Hushaym, who mentioned it."
